Tonight, Tractor Tavern will host three of my favorite Brooklyn indie-pop acts (one of which is sort of from Denver). Miniature Tigers are releasing a new album on March 6th entitled Mia Pharoah . The album is full of playful electro-pop with addictive falsetto melodies - think Hot Chip and Of Montreal mashed together with a touch of Orange Juice. With every song, Miniature Tigers tease and flirt, but do everything to a beat. The full album is streaming on their website now, including the lead single "Sex on the Regular". [...]

Grande Richard Rossa ! Download [...]

One gets the sense that The Chain Gang of 19742s Kamtin Mohager has it in his genes to release complete musical statements. (We used to call them albums.) “From Phil Collins to Fleetwood Mac to the Stills, all of my favorite artists have put out albums,” explains Mohager. “I wanted to do the same thing, not just release a record you kinda skip through.” "It's obvious that listening to music on vinyl is a different experience. The sound alone is unique when compared to digital or CD. But for me, there are [...]

Kamtin Mohager is the genius behind the 80's sounding one piece group The Chain Gang Of 1974 . We chose TCGO1974 to be on our Top 10 Indie Picks for Lollapalooza 2011. If Kamtin hadn’t lived in the 1980’s, you get the feeling that he would somehow still love the decade’s sounds. Like Nine Inch Nails and Dashboard Confessional, the shape-shifting singer/multi-instrumentalist is the only member of the increasingly popular outfit, who of course recruits a band while out touring. If you haven’t listened to the Wayward Fire [...]

Photos by Caleb Dickerson As a music critic, I take pride in being ahead of the curve when it comes to early adoption. I will let you in on a little secret that I have that most bloggers won't admit. Sometimes the way that I learn of new bands worth checking out is by keeping my eyes and ears open to who will be opening for bands that I already want to see. Months ago when I realized that The Naked And Famous were passing through town, I was excited [...]

White Arrows and The Chain Gang of 1974 opened for The Naked and Famous to a packed TLA and they killed it. White Arrows took the stage first and they rocked very stylish Hawaiian shirts. White Arrows music is a very likable combination of Vampire Weekend and The Strokes . The vocals are distinctly from another era of music with a particular snarl reminiscent of the 1970s. White Arrows are in good company on a label out of Brooklyn called [...]
Kamtin Mohager accesses his inner fanboy on the Chain Gang Of 1974’s latest, Wayward Fire. By Brian Baker Kamtin Mohager’s work is a sonic crazy quilt that straddles genres without belonging to one. Take “Stop,” the opening track from Wayward Fire, Mohager’s sophomore album as the Chain Gang Of 1974; initially a Brian Eno bedroom demo [...]

Photo courtesy of Luca Venter The Chain Gang of 1974 is a hybrid of so many sounds in music right now; vocals disfigured by effects, energetic dance beats and body-moving synths, the Chain Gang of 1974 will leave you shaking with its upbeat vibe. Originally the multi-instrumentalist/sole contributor of the group, Kamtin Mohager is now backed by a full band, his ideas supported by a full and captivating myriad of sounds. One moment, he has songs driven by thumping bass; others, he is relying on a combination of synths and heavy, bumping [...]

I went to see Tapes 'n Tapes late last week in Denver. Well, actually, I went to see The Chain Gang of 1974 who was opening for Tapes 'n Tapes. My intuition was right (though the headliner was good as well). I really liked what I heard from Kamtin Mohager's musical vehicle, The Chain Gang of 1974, in limited exposure and that in turn was enough for me to take the opportunity to catch him in his former hometown. So I did. Mohager left Denver after a breakup and he landed in LA. He used the personal situation [...]
Otis didn't just cover a song he reinterpreted it to bring his own style to the original and we have this Sam Cooke classic to prove it.
Denver rocker Kamtin Mohager's project, The Chain Gang of 1974, amplifies the Thompson Twins' one-hit wonder, 'Hold Me Now.'

After touring with Gorillaz , Mick Jones brought his regrouped Big Audio Dynamite to Club Nokia for a headlining show prior wrapping up their stateside tour at Outside Lands in San Francisco. The Chain Gang of 1974 provided support.
Download: Loungin with Lanie Lane Lanie Lane. If you don't know, you definitely will soon. Her music is a mix of blues, country, rockabilly, soul and folk, and the few tracks she has available have left me in anticipation of her album being released in October. She swung by the studio for some light conversation and a live performance. Playlist: The Valentinos - Sweeter Than the Day Before Etta James - Seven Day Fool Nina Simone - It Be's That Way Sometime Otis Redding - [...]

Wayward Fire is a bright, hook-laden, bouncy affair that takes your face and rubs it in its subwoofer big beats. The Chain Gang of 1974 might be the biggest misnomer of a band name to have ever existed. First of all, the music has nothing to do with backbreaking spirituals that prisoners who are cracking open rocks in a field with pickaxes might sing. Secondly, the year 1974 has nothing to do with anything you'll find on Wayward Fire, either; in fact, the sounds of this one-man band -- Denver's Kamtin Mohager -- instead recalls...
I'll be the first to admit that I expected a group when I listened to The Chain Gang of 19742s June 21 release, "Wayward Fire." I didn't get what I thought I would in terms of the number of people involved, but I can't complain about Kamtin Mohager whatsoever. Mohager uses his lyrics and funked up background beats and musical overlay to make listeners think... and move their feet. Should I just break into how awesome "Hold On" is. Sure, it's an 8-minute and 10-second song, but it's worth it's length. The if the shikka-shikkas in [...]
Confusion of spirit will not be found in The Wayward Fire, the third album by The Chain Gang of 1974. In fact, to listen to The Wayward Fire, is to know that Kamtin Mohager (the man behind the Chang Gang curtain) is lovingly, un-ironically enthused by his eighties-inspired beats and lyrics; so much so that many of his songs go on too long, like over-indulged children placing their own orders at a restaurant. Pop-80s culture has been making a comeback in hip-aught culture for a while now, and popular 80s music—once regarded by some as evidence of a [...]
I posted about the remix Silver Swans did for The Chain Gang of 19742s "Undercover" but not the original. Where as the remix was more of a cleaned up and more New Order-esque, the original is a gritty raucous of sound overdriven by synthesizers. Compared to the remix it went back to where New Order [...]
