This edition in the Covered With Soul series might be one of the best so far. Here we have covers of songs better known by Free, The Rolling Stones, The Young Rascals, Frank Sinatra, The Beatles, Bob Dylan, Stephen Stills, Bobby Hebb, The Carpenters, Matt Monro, James Taylor, Simon & Garfunkel, Blood Sweat & Tears, The Bee Gees, The Box Tops, Joe Cocker (covering The Beatles), Gil Scott-Heron, Judy Garland, Frankie Valli, and Nat 'King' Cole. Some of these versions rework the songs so thoroughly, one might imagine they have always been soul songs. Just check out what [...]

In this instalment in the Covered With Soul series we have a second selection of soul songs covered by soul acts. We have met most of the featured artists before, perhaps none more so than Erma Franklin. Here we have Erma covering a song originally performed by her bigger sister, Aretha Franklin (whose 70th birthday we have just celebrated). One act here is quite unlike any of the others we have heard in this series: Una Valli was not only white (as were the Flaming Embers), but also South African, having some local success as a soul singer in the [...]

This is Volume 8 of Covered With Soul , and there is no end in sight (unless a lack of comments suggests there should be). Check out the re-interpretation of Wichita Lineman, Be My Baby, Won't Get Fooled Again, Fever, Sunshine Superman and Rainy Day Women #12 & 35. Perhaps the most radically reworked cover here is David Porter's take on that old crooners' favourite All The Way. It's not how Sinatra sang it (he certainly had no harp in his version). But my favourite cover here might be Esther Phillips ' of Gilbert O'Sullivan Along [...]

Let's state the obvious first: Rebecca Black's Friday does not represent an acme moment in the annals of popular music. I am even inclined to agree with those who suggest the song is quite awful, especially in its excess of autotuning. It sounds like the theme song for a particularly hyperactive Japanese game show. My remaining days will not be diminished by the absence of Friday on my iPod. But those people with whom I'm inclined to agree are not the target audience, many of whom dislike the song as well. Black's target audience has a crush on [...]

The Grim Reaper had another busy month. He took from us the soul legend Solomon Burke, who only a few months ago delivered a new album, and the brilliant General Johnson, a wonderful vocalist whose Chairmen of the Board shone in the early '70s, and who wrote such hits as Patches (Clarence Carter), Want Ads (Honey Cone) and Freda Payne's Bring The Boys Home (the video for You Got Me Dangling On A String is rather nice). Reggae fans will mourn the soulful Gregory Isaacs, and post-punk fans the passing of The Slits' German-born punster Ari Up. [...]

Jens LekmanThe Opposite of Hallelujah (MP3)The Chairmen of the Board Give Me Just a Little More Time (MP3)Jens, meet The Chairmen of the Board. Gentlemen, meet Jens. Oh, wait, it appears you've already met. Our Swedish friend Jens is, of course, no stranger to the curious desire and pull that influences, conscious or not, can exert on one's work. In previous songs, he's graciously lifted from
For the group's recent Daytrotter session, the Spinto Band broke out an ace cover/mash-up of "Give Me Just A Little More Time." Listen carefully and you'll catch the guys mashing Gwen Stefani's "The Sweet Escape" in the middle of the song and Thin Lizzy's "Boys Are Back In Town" at ...

Sometimes I think I would like to be a DJ. But not at a bar. At a pub. Or an alehouse. I would like to do this on Tuesday nights. I don't think my playlists would really work on a weekend, or on a Thursday, and Wednesdays don't seem right for some reason. Tuesday is perfect. People would reminisce about the weekend that passed. Stories would be told, and plans would be made for the coming Friday over bottles of Pilsner, or whatever the draught special is for that particular night. As the crowd thins out and handshakes are exchanged [...]

before t'internet, there were magazines. ok there still are magazines but i now buy two per month - heat and glamour - whereas back in the day i used to get about ten. just seventeen was good for horoscopes and those little free books that taught you to be a total stalker, in a completely non-harmless way of course...'close your eyes and think of a question. stick a pencil down anywhere on the page. find the symbol you land on and the answer will be revealed....'he thinks you're too good for him'. well, durrrr. more! was of [...]

So school is over and our burgeoning blogocrew has been busy settling into its summering ways. And because of this the blog has begun to feel a little stagnant. I can't speak for everyone, but I know there have been a few causes for my own relative silence. NUMBER ONE May 12th brought about the last episode of the radio show which Fran and I host , and with it went one of my main impetusi (that should be the plural of impetus) for hunting down new music, which usually consists of scouring [...]

"Right now I'm down with Honey Nut Cheerios because that's what Omar eats on The Wire. I don't know if you're a Wire fan, but on the show Omar travels far and wide and risks getting killed just to get a box of Honey Nuts. So I like to think it keeps me connected to the streets." -amy poehler (via vulture ) download: chairmen of the board - so glad you're mine related: sure, amy poehler's hilarious , but kristen wiig [...]

Give Me Just A Little More Glitch Conoscevo il nome di Viktor Sjöberg soltanto per il bel remix di Stockholm Doesn't Belong To Me dei Most Valuable Players, presente nella compilation Are You Scared To Get Happy? dello scorso anno.

Chairmen Of The Board: Everything's Tuesday [1970] written by Ronald Dunbar, Edith Wayne*, and Daphne Dumas This perfect slice of AM radio sunshine soul had me reaching for the rewind button on the subway yesterday (Tuesday). It's a great song to listen to twice in a row because it clocks in at 2:48. This went to #38 on the pop charts in September of '70, and made 770 WABC radio's Heavy Hundred Hits for the year (see above). *Edith Wayne, I'm told , is a pseudonym for Eddie Holland (of Holland-Dozier-Holland). [...]
