My dear reader, if you remember the end of 2008, I ranked The Chairs' cover of "In The Aeroplane Over The Sea" #6 on my favorite covers of the year list. Looks like they're getting a head start on 2009 by tackling Bon Iver's "Flume"! This cover takes Bon Iver's soulful lo-fi and gives it a sexy, Hot Chip "Made In The Dark" makeover. Enjoy! Eugen Sakhnenko - [ from In Praise of Shadows ] Seeing her in her work environment is like seeing a nightclub in full light, without shadow or subtlety. Coyness and mystery are replaced by a large smile with white teeth and a forceful hello. Her face suddenly lacks the alluring makeup of the night. Under halogen tubes, honesty seems like the deception. The Chairs Flume [Bon Iver cover] (mp3)

P.O.S. tops Billboard chart, the Hopefuls tour dates, St. Paul Slim on B96 & Haley Bonar records Daytrotter session
Christianity had Paul. The United States had Federalist papers. Indie rock has Neutral Milk Hotel. What do they all have in common? They did not invent the game but they all wrote the rules. ...

Some news and some music. U2 announced that they will release No Line on the Horizon - the band's latest studio effort on March 3, 2009. It's hard to believe that it has now been over four years since How To Dismantle An Atomic Bomb came out. The Academy Is... are streaming their new video for " Winter Passing ." From the amazingly underrated and brilliant band Moneen to date is news that the boy's will be heading into the studio next month with producer David [...]
If you have recently read my blog you will know that I think that The Chairs are a band to watch for 2009. They are hard at work on material and have taken some time off to record "O Come O Come Emmanuel" in order to celebrate the holiday season. The tune continues to [...]

First, public thanks to Pete Green for stopping by on Saturday's snow post. His song fit the theme perfectly! We're having nother rainy day with a forecast of more for Christmas eve, which puts a damp, chill factor on our pre-Christmas preparations. Here are a couple of holiday offerings from band friends to cheer us up. First, the Chairs put their personal spin on a traditional carole. Great a capella harmonies near the end! The Chairs deserved a post a lot earlier than this. I have been enjoying their November EP for a few weeks now, but somehow I managed to push this post back. The Chairs are a band from Wisconsin that are slowly gaining lots of blog buzz thanks to their very strong EP. One of the EP highlights right from the get go for me was their cover of the masterful Neutral Milk Hotel's 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea'. 'Dark Clothes' is a solid way to start the EP setting the mood just right. The NMH cover is [...]

MICHAEL: [penipus courtesy of GorillaMask] That's right. Oh Shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiii iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiit . Have fun, I'll be In The Aeroplane Over The Sea . [mp3 courtesy Pigeons and Planes]

I heard about The Chairs when a few blogs posted the fantastic cover they did of my favourite Neutral Milk Hotel song 'In The Aeroplane Over The Sea'. I then headed over to their website and discovered they are offering their November EP for price of...well, nothing! It's just 5 songs including the cover but it's amazingly awesome. Alex Schaff, the guy on vocals, his voice slightly resembles that of Radiohead's Thom Yorke so you can get a hint at how good this band is already. Furthermore, I love the subtle bass underlying their songs and [...]

So last Thursday was just a regular Thursday in Nathaniel world: post some covers, go to class, watch The Office, have a few drinks.. same ole, same ole. The only slight difference in last week's edition of Thursday and Covers was the fact that I played host to some less notable bands in preparation for a feature on them this week. After a lot of reader interest (comments, emails, etc.), I'm going the route of giving the people what they want and focusing (first) on a Wisconsin band called The Chairs . Well, [...]

I am always amazed at how far-reaching and influential Neutral Milk Hotel's 1998 album In the Aeroplane Over the Sea has been to so many artists. On their debut recording, Wisconsin band The Chairs , with Alex Schaaf doing the vocal honors and searing guitar licks, pay homage to that source of inspiration. This cover is featured on a five-song EP that the band is self-releasing tomorrow on their website. But the Chairs aren't just a cover band; their original songs are well-written and arranged with [...]

I've been sitting on this one for a while, but it's begging to be put on. Here's a cover of one of my all time favorite songs "In An Aeroplane Over the Sea" by Neutral Milk Hotel. The band doing the covering is The Chairs. I think I got it at WAWSTSF . It's a good version. There is only one Jeff Mangum, but since he's so elusive, it's good to hear someone singing this timeless song. Check the original and the cover. Neutral Milk Hotel - In An Aeroplane Over the Sea [...]

I reckon you've gotta be a raving lunatic to cover Regina Spektor. She's pretty unique and also seems to be held in fairly high regard in the blog world (even this place is named after one of her songs) so I guess you've gotta be pretty confident that you can pull it off. Dashboard Confessional do a pretty sweet acoustic cover of 'Better' and it's cool to hear a male version, complete with throaty vocals. The strings are nice too. Better (Regina Spektor Cover) - Dashboard Confessional Same goes for covering [...]

The Last Shadow Puppets - I Want You (She's So Heavy) (Beatles Cover) The wonderful delightful side project of the Alex Turner (Arctic Monkeys) and Miles Kane (The Rascals) are on of the bright spots of 2008 for many obvious reasons. Not only is Alex Turner one of the brightest songwriters of this generation, but then you add his good buddy Miles to the mix and they complement each other perfectly. A little less than a week ago at [...]

On Tuesday, superproducer/recording artist/Microsoft pitchman Pharrell opened his gallery show at the Emmanuel Perrotin Gallery in Paris. It sounds pretty fancy! For his first exhibition in a gallery, Pharrell has created some furniture with vibrant colors and slick surfaces. Two chairs will be exhibited: one with the legs of a lion and the second with human legs. They will be produced in different colors, with a choice for the seat in veal skin or leather. The shape of the seat is inspired by the "Eames chair". Pharrell Williams diverted examples of classical [...]

Damn, I like this one. Usually here at the vaunted Ripple Office, we like to start our reviews with a build-up, a story, some history, a metaphor. Something to ease into the review and perhaps lend a personal slant. Not this time. All I can say is, damn, I like this one. Coming from Sweden, by far the Ripple 's favorite mecca of music and hockey, comprised of one American singer-songwriter and four Swedish musicians, The Chair roar at you with an unadulterated blitzkrieg of raw [...]
