Dance music royalty Greg Wilson is in the process of giving away edits on his soundcloud . I think he's adding a new one each week, usually in wav format. This edit, an extension of an early 70s disco hit, stood out to me. It originally appeared on GW's Ruff Edits #4 release. An interesting story lies with the original, too. Read more... I watched Boogie Nights the other day. It's about the porn industry so you pretty much know what you're in for from the start. But surprisingly, moving away from the obvious - a movie filled with boobs, coke and a mass schlong, the movie actually had some fucking awesome tunes throughout it. Plus if 'schlong' [...]

The Chakachas - Jungle Fever (1972)

Sach O ate fries with mayo and two burritos while researching this story. In the mad dash towards Tropicalia, Hindi-Pop, Afrobeat, and every other hastily discovered internet-approved form of non-Anglo pop music, there hasn't been much room for humor. Seriousness begets authenticity, authenticity begets that warm fuzzy feeling of self-importance in a record nerd and anything remotely funny reminds everyone that we're still all dealing with pop records and NOT discovering some long-lost culture. Our foul decade was one with irony as a defining virtue, but oddly enough while the "wink-wink-nudge-nudge" so-bad-its-good ethos works for shitty [...]

This week saw the passing of the great Earle Hagen . His name may not be a household word, but his music is burned into your brain. He was a TV theme writer extraordinaire, whose credits include catchy ditties for The Andy Griffith Show, The Dick Van Dyke Show, That Girl, and The Mod Squad to name a few. A bunch of his themes are available at AM Then FM's Hagen tribute post. Hagen is also the composer behind "Harlem Nocturne", probably one of the most covered saxaphone songs in history (500 [...]

That title may make it sound like I'm going to go off on current events again, but if the best the world can throw at me this week is "Unfitney", then screw that. Instead, we'll start off this week's MP3 finds from the wonderful music blog world with some nostalgia for when we almost had real televised journalism: Egg City Radio somehow managed to dig up 33 tracks of vintage 1978 bed music from ABC's "World News Tonight" . While the tympanies and horns are probably still embedded in your head, check out some [...]
Jungle Fever - Chakachas - One of the wierdest songs ever to hit the Top 10 (in 1972), but one helluva dancefloor burner.
