Facebook / chalkandnumbers.bandcamp.com/ Yes, yes, I've got my religious holidays all wrong I know but I completely missed this wonderful Chalk and Numbers Christmas song back in December, so on the day so good it's actually called Good Friday I'm posting a xmas song. Frankly who cares for bad timing when a song is this cute and adorable, "Happiness This Time of Year" is sickly sweet, deliciously nostalgic and best of all, fun. I really am happy to be posting it upon my discovery, what's timing anyway? For me at [...]

Brooklyn duo Andrew Pierce and Sable Yong form the members of Chalk and Numbers , a group with fun loving 60s inspired girl vox sensibilities. This track and EP are about a year old but really, music like this can be from any time and it'll still be good. Surprised these guys aren't talked about in the same circles as Tennis or Cults, but I guess it's all the luck of the draw. Anyways, check out the tune for some nostalgic fun.

Brooklyn's Chalk And Numbers make modern Indie Pop with Classic Pop touches. Inspired by their favorite artists, such as The Beach Boys and Dusty Springfield, they use older recording techniques to capture the charm of antiquated sounds and do their damndest to avoid all things modern (and digital) during the the recording process. (They allow those influences to come out during performances and writing songs.) Undoubtedly lo-fi as a result of this lack of technology, Chalk And Numbers don't veer into the palace of over distortion that most modern [...]

Tweet Admittedly, I welcome when a song opens up my memory bank, overloading my senses with nostalgic associations. This new tune becomes a snowball of time and space that makes me spew more references than I know what to do with - if you haven't yet noticed. Yet to stick, it's got to do more than just evoke memories of things past. Andrew Pierce and Sable Yong of Chalk And Numbers make songs that are reminiscent of the '60s pop psychedelia of [...]

Chalk And Numbers Album: He Knew EP (Buy) Label: Unsigned Chalk and Numbers – Summer Nights Tweet

Alright, it's marathon weekend out in Mt. Robson, BC. I am having to back out of the race due to some sort of Cuboid bone problem that I can't seem to fix. Either way I am still going to sit and cheer from the sidelines. I really can't think of a better way to spend a saturday afternoon then sitting below the highest peak in the Canadian Rockies, drinking baileys & coffee, all the while watching some of my friends struggle through a painful running race. Here is what I will be listening to. [...]

With its title an inversion of the Beach Boys' exclamation-bearing 1965 album, twee duo Chalk and Numbers' latest song doesn't stop the resemblance there. "Summer Nights (and Summer Days)" pays homage to the band's cavernous drums and their heartbeat bass (shout-out to Carol Kaye), skipping the Boys' trademark harmonies in favor of Sable Yong's double-tracked warble. The pared-down vocals keep the attention on the words, a time-honored tale of a summer romance doomed by the coming change of seasons. By the time the keyboard solo arrives, you'll be clutching your heart, remembering that last kiss by the campfire. [...]

Last week we bought you an interview with Brooklyn duo Chalk and Numbers . The band have now announced that they will release a brand new single, next week, on August 22nd. The song entitled Summer Nights is a bonus track from the bands upcoming He Knew EP. The song is, once again, a refreshing blast of low-key, Beach Boys inspired pop, which further enhances the duo's reputation. You can stream the single right here on GFP; [...]

chalkandnumbers.bandcamp.com/ / Facebook When I first posted about Chalk and Numbers last December I described them like this; "...with the same charming vibe that works so well for She & Him, pretty as a flower lyrics, lovely vocals and happy melodies...". On August 22nd the Brooklyn duo return with their new single 'Summer Nights', a bonus track on a re-issue of their 'He Knew EP', and guess what? I could say pretty much exactly the same thing again. For fans of nostalgic sun-drenched, beautiful day music "Summer Nights" will be [...]
Second in the series of our new weekly feature which takes a look at some of our favourite songs of the week. Lot's more good music for your ears this week, same rubbish name though I'm afraid folks. Get used to it. Welcome to the GFP Stream Room... Neon Indian - Fallout First song to be released from Neon Indian' s upcoming Era Erana LP is pretty darn lovely. Alan Palomo recorded much of the album holed-up in Helsinki apparently...that's the only fact [...]
Because what's better than kicking out She & Him-style jams in the woods? Please keep this band and their wonderful He Knew EP in mind before you buy the charisma-hating Cults record. Chalk and Numbers - "I Really Want To Work This Out" : mp3 Previously: Chalk and Numbers - He Knew EP
" Let's Go Away " ist auf der im Januar veröffentlichten He Knew EP erschienen, die ich auch schon mal im Blog vorgestellt hatte. Diese könnt ihr euch immer noch for free auf Bandcamp runterladen. Today my son Elias turns 2. Kind of unbelievable how fast time flies. He is pure happiness all the time and has changed my life completely (in a good way of course). Over the past few weeks... [go to the website to read the rest of the article, download mp3s and more]

Chalk and Numbers Album Review: Chalk and Numbers by Jamie Charmichael Chalk and Numbers is an aesthetically delicious cocktail made up of two main ingredients: Andrew Pierce providing sweet instrumentals and Sable Yong dashing in some vintage vocals, shaken (not stirred). The Brooklyn-based band - with their 1960's retro-inspired sound - released their first EP entitled He Knew on January 23, 2011, introducing their sound to the new year. The duo marries the already existing sounds of their other [...]

Chalk and Numbers Chalk and Numbers have a six-song EP, He Knew , that has been the staple of my time in front of my computer this past weekend. They have a dash of '602s pop in them, but to me, I keep hearing a lot of The Carpenters in their music. Enjoy.

Chalk And Numbers ride a 602s indie avenue that leans less on reverb and more on the songs. All in all, the charm resonates longer than the bulk of all those "drenched in sound" retro bands and their overblown receptions. Find your own thaw in the midst of whatever freeze you're involved by giving a listen to the new EP, He Knew . http://chalkandnumbers.bandcam p.com/

There's a very fine line between throwing back to an older style and just purely mimicking it, and it's one that causes me to struggle with a lot of 50s or 60s "inspired" pop. I can appreciate bands like Lucky Soul, but only in reasonably small quantities as I find the novelty wears off pretty quickly. So I have absolutely no idea what my long-term feelings toward Chalk and Numbers will turn out to be. At the moment though, He Knew is a perfect little slice of nostalgia pop. He Knew is taken from [...]
