Indeed, Burst's laid-back country and blues inspired songs provided a perfect backdrop to a breezy summer evening on the 210 Cook St rooftop... until the NYPD decided to shut down the party. Fortunately, Burst managed to finish most of his set of finely crafted, timeless American rock n' roll. Burst is an accomplished producer/engineer and [...]

Well, it's almost time for 2nd Northside Festival , during which The L Magazine takes over the Williamsburg and Greenpoint music venues for a few days. The Northside Festival will feature over 300 bands this year. Some relatively big names are playing ( Liars , The Fiery Furnaces , Fucked Up , Polvo ). But what this is really about is the chance to see lots of bands in small venues. It's an indie music overdose. You can get an idea of what it's like by listening to this radio [...]
Skeletonbreath @ Cake Shop (Ernest Jenning Showcase): I don't know how I caught this band, I think I was just in the right place at the right time, but Skeletonbreath are an impressive three piece. Playing instrumental, progressive music led by an insane violinist generally isn't the way to the Top 40 charts, but then I don't think a band called Skeletonbreath care much about something like that.

I like Ernest Jenning's taste. They've signed my homeboy Chris Mills, are pushing O'death onto an unsuspecting public and now they've signed and will soon release the solo record from ex-Occasion drummer Charlie Burst . His brawny singer-songwriter style is usually not my style, but I'll take EJ's word that this will be a good release. The new record and Charlie's debut doesn't have a release date yet but is titled Come Home and Feast . The first song released is called "Bars". Charlie Burst has a strange vocal presence (almost spooky, [...]
