(another album the Ripple crew loved so much, it had to be reviewed twice. you can read the earlier review here ) Some musical minds are beyond description. Charles Mingus had one of them. A jazz musician (a pioneer in double bass technique), a composer, a bandleader and a civil rights activist with a truly American story. He recorded from at least 1945 through 1977 which was two years before he died of ALS. He appears on over 100 recordings. His own music tends to fuse gospel, smooth [...]
Ever since we featured the Westone 3 earbuds awhile back on the site, I frequently receive comments noting that although the Westone 32s sound like a great set of earbuds, they also carry a high price tag to accompany their high quality. Understandably, many readers aren't interested in purchasing earbuds at that price point. But good headphones can be hard to find and the market is simply flooded with crappy earbuds that aren't worth the packaging they are shipped in. In that regard, I'm more than happy to recommend the Thinksound ts02 earbuds which the company [...]
Austin quartet White Denim will release D, their fifth studio album on May 24. That same night, they'll play San Diego's Casbah, and it'll be worth your while to check it out. The experimental indie band has been compared to the Minutemen and Randy Newman (yes, both), and is known for infusing anything from punk [...] Follow Owl and Bear on Facebook and Twitter for contests, MP3s, and links that don't make it onto the blog.
Lisa Strouss Austin Peralta "Algiers" (from Endless Planets out now on Brainfeeder ) Brainfeeder is a label of ever-expanding invention, the cosmic heir to the pioneering spirit of Impulse! Records and Strata-East. Like those jazz giants before them, Brainfeeder thrums with a collective energy, synthesizing each artist's unique sound and story into a single, shared cosmology. To those reared only on squelching electronics, Austin Peralta's Endless Planets must seem to exist somewhere out on the periphery of that universe: pure, instrumental jazz [...]
You don't usually see a whole lot House music posted ont his site and if it is, it's generally either done by Leisha or it's a remix/mashup I've posted as a QuickPick. This time though I'm doing a little writeup about an EP that was sent to me last week by Rubix. He'd uploaded it to his Soundcloud page, three songs long but only excerpts. Usually if someone sends me an excerpt I'll ignore it because who wants to hear half/clips of a song? Homie don't want no part of that, but this time I gave it a [...]
Colin Stetson plays a variety of woodwinds. On his recently released New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges , he plays a solo saxophone, recording his tracks live in a single (and usually, first) take, accompanied sometimes by the guest appearances of Laurie Anderson and My Brightest Diamond's Shara Worden. The latter delivers a vocal performance of a lifetime in her cover of Blind Willie Johnson's "Lord I Just Can't Keep From Crying Sometimes", dripping with soul and affection, enveloped by Stetson's signature unceasing mourn. But the focal point of Judges has to be Stetson's [...]
The basement in which my band rehearses has a giant poster on the wall that I often find myself staring at as I sing. My eyes wander comfortably across the many faces as the band plays until I often realize with a shock whose eyes are staring back at me. Count Basie. Thelonius Monk. Charles Mingus. Mary Lou Williams. Gene Krupa. And here I am singing jazz to them? A severe attack of insecurity usually follows. The photograph is "A Great Day in Harlem," probably the most recognized jazz image in the world. Curious about the making of this stroke [...]
Filed under: News , R.I.P. Buddy Collette, jazz musician, bandleader and civil rights advocate, died on Sept. 19 in Los Angeles. The 89-year-old's daughter, Cheryl Collette-White, told the Los Angeles Times that the cause of death was due to respiratory problems. While not widely known unlike his jazz contemporaries, Collette played with Count Basie , Thelonious Monk , Ella Fitzgerald , Nat King Cole , Frank Sinatra and Duke Ellington [...]
Give the Drummer Some's Favorite Downloads from the MP3 Blogosphere At Mining the Audio Motherlode, we're all about basking in the warm glow of the wonderful sound of sound. Anything can be music if you hear it just right. In that spirit, there are times when there is no greater music than the simple sounds of baseball on the radio. The ambient noises of the game—the crack of bat on ball, the purr of the crowd, the fog-cutting "striiiiiike" call of umpire Dutch Rennert, and, of course, the homespun rhythms and cadences of [...]

There is a new documentary being made about Charles Mingus (the late grate Jazz musician) by his grandson. He needs some help with the funding, please check this out and maybe give him a hand with this important project. From the Web Site The feature-length documentary is the journey of a grandson searching for the truth behind the legend of the grandfather he never knew. Surrounded by controversy for his polemic actions and his unpredictability, the enigmatic figure of his grandfather became a jazz icon. The documentary opens doors to unknown facets [...]

Gebhard Ullmann, Tá Lam 11: 'Mingus!'
I picked up "Mingus," a new album by Gebhard Ullmann and Tá Lam 11, at the store, mostly because Charles Mingus is my favorite musician ever. I kept my expectations in check, though, because I've heard a lot of musicians cover Mingus before and their versions, though often good, usually sound like thin imitations of [...]

.....Mingus In Europe
The 1964 Charles Mingus Quintet teamed together the unique multi-instrumentalist Eric Dolphy, tenor-saxophonist Clifford Jordan, pianist Jaki Byard, drummer Dannie Richmond and the bassist/leader in one of the great bands of the 1960s. There are many recordings currently available from their European tour 1964 and all are worth acquiring including these two excellent sets.... Links; Charles

Something for the Weekend: The Chico Hamilton Quintet "Blue Sands (live at the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival)"
Those that know me, should know that I have a great love of jazz; especially percussion driven works from the 1940's through to the late-60's. Its driving precision often held a sort of manic fluidity in check; like sheer madness surrounding a column of calm. As one of my favourite musicians of all time, Chico Hamilton was that calm. Hamilton was born in Los Angeles of 1921 and although his
