This was my first time taking photos at the National Art Centre 's Southam Hall. I've only been there a few times for music and some performing arts. Playing at the nice venue was the incredible and talented Feist . She was touring in support of her new album Metals. Despite being there for the first three songs. People told me how amazing and magically it was. I was surprised to see Charles Spearin there. [...]

Cougar Microbes caught up with Little Tybee's vocalist Brock Scott to discuss the "nuclear" family, viral hysteria, bringing back the mullet and LA rich little white girls. Here is how it went: Cougar Microbes: What time did you wake up today? Was it out of choice or necessity? Little Tybee: I woke up at 8 [...]

All of the songs listed below were personally chosen by the artist or blogger above. I got in touch with a lot of artists and bloggers who were all kind enough to get back to me and take part in Desert Island Discs. If you're unaware of the concept behind Desert Island Discs , check out the basic pitch I gave the artists and bloggers I got in touch with. If you're an artist or blogger and want to take part, just send your submission with the eight pieces of music (not the actual mp3s) and some [...]

Filed under: Video , Movies , Canada Fans of Canadian indie rock and Canadian indie cinema have been chomping at the bit for the June 25 release of 'This Movie is Broken,' a part-scripted, part-concert film that brings together Broken Social Scene with legendary filmmakers Bruce MacDonald ('Highway 61,' 'Hard Core Logo') and Don McKellar ('Last Night,' 'Slings & Arrows'). MacDonald previously worked with BSS on his 2007 film 'The Tracey Fragments,' which starred Ellen Page and featured a score composed by Broken Social [...]
It seems hard to believe that it's been five years since Canadian indie-rock collective Broken Social Scene released their self-titled third album. Since then, BSS's individual members have gone on to find success on their own with the likes of Leslie Feist, Kevin Drew, Jason Collett - as well as members of Metric, Stars and Apostle Of Hustle - all having logged time in the band. After putting out a couple of albums under the Broken Social Scene Presents moniker, the Toronto-based act is back with their latest offering Forgiveness Rock [...]
(source: myspace.com/arkellsmusic) While the country is going to get to watch the gala festivities tonight, last night in St. John's NL the 2010 Juno Awards presented lovely lady statues for a good number of big and awards, and they went to a few QBiM favourites. Metric and Joel Plaskett had the alternative album categories all wrapped up: Three earned Plaskett the Adult Alternative album award while Fantasies won Metric the kiddie Alternative album award. A [...]

Broken Social Scene is a collective built from many disparate parts, but perhaps its most eclectic side-project is Charles Spearin 's Happiness Project , which won its creator a best contemporary jazz prize at the 2010 Juno Awards. "It's supposed to be a tribute to happiness," he said from the podium, a wide smile plastered across his face, " ...and here I am I'm holding a Juno. I really have to thank my neighbours for their wisdom and their words and their thoughts." Indeed, this unusual album takes voice recordings [...]

Filed under: News , Exclusive , Canada Generally considered a showcase for big-name pop and rock stars, this year's Juno Awards nominations featured a surprising amount of quality indie music in the major categories. Canada's equivalent to the Grammys managed to offset nominations to such obvious artists as Nickelback , Hedley and Justin Bieber with ones for indie heroes Metric , k-os and Thunderheist , as well as hip-hop's self-made superstar Drake , in some of the [...]

Laura Swanson - Coat (2005) A woman, a needle woman, came across herself in a coffeeshop bathroom mirror. She pressed her thin fingers into her sunken cheeks, stared for a minute, then crinkled a brown paper towel and disposed of it purely for routine. He thought she emerged wobbly, the needle woman, with focus only in the tips of her pointy fingers. He watched as she tipped over to sit. She laid her long fingers in her lap, tapping a reality as her smile lied a nicety. Sorry that took [...]

Despite being a fan for about eight years, last night at the Biltmore was my first chance to see Do Make Say Think live and I was not disappointed. I'd been hearing for years how powerful DMST are on stage and I finally found out for myself. The nine-piece band (four of whom had made their way to Australia over the past four years as members of Broken Social Scene) were absolutely immense. Two drummers, guitars, bass, horns and Julie Penner on violin all made their presence felt on Do Make Say Think's vast soundscapes right [...]

Broken Social Scene are back together, and ready to blow your mind with an all star lineup. We would expect nothing less.

Filed under: New Music , Canada Broken Social Scene 's rabidly anticipated new album may not have a title yet, but it's finally got a release date: May 4, 2010. It's been almost five years since their self-titled third album and in the intervening years many members of the Toronto collective have gone on to great success with solo efforts and assorted outside projects while Broken Social Scene's breakthrough album 'You Forgot It In People' was remembered on many a decade-end list. But [...]

Finally the time has come and I reveal to you my Top 10 Canadian albums of 2009. Hope you like what's in store in the Top 10. It was a hard decision, so hope you agree or disagree with this. Three (Volume 1 , 2 , 3 ) – Joel Plaskett 2009 was Joel Plaskett's year just because he released THREE not as just one but three albums in one. How ambitious and epic is that? [...]

worst picture ever? worst picture ever. Due to an abundance of quality songs, combined with an equal abundance of very long songs (I'm a total sucker for 10-minute tracks, and there were lots of good ones this year), I'm gonna split this up over the next three days. As with the end of decade post , this isn't a definitive list - it's just a bunch of favorites arranged in a nice, pleasing way. If you like what you hear, go out and purchase the albums which contain these songs. If you don't like what [...]
Well it's that time again. It's been a good year in music for sure – so much so that we've bumped our list up to 25 albums this time around, and even then we were having to painfully cut out some clearly great records. Remember, this list represents our favorite albums of the year, not necessarily the best albums of the year. If we had to pick what we thought were the very best albums critically, this would probably be a very different list. But we're no critics, so that's not what we're going [...]

The Happiness Project is Charles Spearin from Do Make Say Think (also performing this Sunday). He basically interviewed a bunch of people about what happiness is, and created a piece of music from these interviews. It is REALLY COOL and definitely something you'll want to see. I have no idea how he performs it live, but I'm sure it will be moving and beautiful. Listen below and go to the show.
