Pretty solid release lineup this week. Let me be your friendly guide about what's good and what to skip. Good: Ben Folds , Dan Auerbach (from The Black Keys), Lily Allen , Madlib , Malajube , Napalm Death Skip: Um... yeah, I got nothing. Like I said, solid week. There are a lot on here I know nothing about and a lot that I haven't heard, so I can't speak about. :: An Horse , Rearrange Beds (Mom & [...]

Charles Spearin The Happiness Project Arts & Crafts Records [2009] Fire Drills Review: Spearin is the third member of Broken Social Scene to release a solo record for Arts & Crafts following Kevin Drew and Brendan Canning. The Happiness Project is an interesting mix of jazz, indie, folk and spoken word that gets more intriguing with every listen. Basically Spearin invited his neighbors over to the house for a casual interview vaguely [...]

The Happiness Project - Anna A simple idea, wonderfully executed: Charles Spearin (Broken Social Scene, Do Say Make Think) invited his neighbours over in the summer to talk about happiness. He transcribed the melodies of their stories into sound, blurring the line between speaking and singing in a recording that captures the natural rythmns of language and life. I hope they turn this project into an animated documentary - it would work brilliantly. Charles Spearin's The Happiness Project is out this week on Arts & Crafts. [...]
Prior to Broken Social Scene taking the stage at Bass Concert Hall we were able to grab a few minutes with Brendan Canning and Charles Spearin. They talk about the current state of the band, their most recent tour, and details about their solo albums. Thanks to Robin and Brendan for all of the arrangements and preparations. Who: Beirut Title: March of the Zapotec and Realpeople Holland Release Date: February 17th Label: Ba Da Bing Thoughts: Listening to the two part EP from Beirut is really a trial especially when they are put back-to-back. March of the Zapotec is the sound of the more traditional aspects of Beirut with lots of old world, European influences, while Realpeople Holland finds Zach Condon and company exploring a more electronic sound. Put together the sound falters horribly. Zapotec does nothing to [...]
The just announced Charles Spearin show at Le Poisson Rouge show made me want to dig a little deeper into the " Wordless Music " concert schedule for 2009 and when I did, I found lots of interesting things. A few of the things that caught my attention amongst the impressively eclectic lineup were: Toumani Diabate, James Blackshaw, Meg Baird, Craig Wedren, The Books, The Mountain Goats, John Vanderslice, Juana Molina and the aforementioned Spearin . The full schedule (so far) looks like this: June 25, 2009 JOHANN [...]

Charles Spearin Photo : Norman Wong As I mentioned a little while ago , Charles Spearin of Broken Social Scene has a new (kind of weird) album coming out on Valentine's Day called The Happiness Project . He just announced some limited tour dates including one show at Le Poisson Rouge on March 15, 2009 (the only US date so far). From what I've heard of the album up to now, (just the two songs available [...]

This could be the most interesting record I buy in 2009. Charles Spearin (of Broken Social Scene , Do Make Say Think , KC Accidental ) will be releasing an album (Feb. '09, Arts and Crafts ) called The Happiness Project . It will not sound like anything you have in your collection. Its a series of interviews with his neighbors based loosely around their concepts of what happiness is. With music. The audio footage was analyzed by meaning and melody; Spearin then blurred the line between speaking and singing by writing music [...]
At least for us east coasters, it's rainy and cold outside, and with the holidays still a few weeks away, these last few days have tended to really drag on. While our Friday Mixtape is always worthwhile, for the aforementioned reasons, this week's is particularly awesome. After all, what better way to kick off your weekend then a collection of the week's best new singles and remixes along with mp3s from a few up-and-comers you should definitely check out? Yeah, nothing much. NEW Singles: "Submarines of Stockholm" by [...]
I'm fascinated by bands who can use the power of their lyrics not only with meaning but also with the actual tones and inflection of each word. I've always found language to have an inherently musical nature, and apparently I'm not the only one who's noticed. Charles Spearin, founding member of Broken Social Scene (and perhaps somewhat lesser known Do Make Say Think ) will be releasing his album The Happiness Project February 14 on B.S.S. label Arts & Crafts . [...]

DOWNLOAD : "Anna" - The Happiness Project (mp3) The latest album from Charles Spearin ( Do Make Say Think and Broken Social Scene ) entitled The Happiness Project will be released in Canada and the U.S. on February 14, 2009 on the Arts & Crafts label. Here's a little explanation from Spearin on the idea behind the "Happiness Project": "These are my neighbours. My wife and I have two little kids and live in downtown Toronto." Spearin [...]

Legendary. That's the only way to describe the last time Canadian collective Broken Social Scene 's last show in Omaha, Nebraska. Last year the guys were just chilling at a local coffee shop without a booked show, when a native recognized the boys and insisted they play. Broken Social Scene agreed and quickly set up over at the Slowdown Jr. stage. There was no announcement or promotion, but word quickly spread and a decent sized crowd gathered in front of the stage for a free, intimate set by BSS. They closed down the bar and went on their merry [...]
