Courtesy of kidrock.comCountry rap, or "hick-hop" as it's sometimes called, may seem to capture either the height of musical irony, or the height of its stupidity. Probably both. But in the book The A
When you’re used to the ultra-conservative Charlie Daniels of today, it’s easy to forget that he was once a Southern-rock wild man. That’s where Live at Rockpalast comes in. Much like the ZZ Top Rockpalast performance that was featured on their Double Down DVD, this captures Charlie Daniels in the prime of his power on the German television show. Though [...]

At a Country Music Association awards show in the late 1970s, Ray Benson of Asleep At The Wheel showed up wearing a stetsons. He and the similarly behatted and long-haired Charlie Daniels and John Anderson were politely asked to remove their headgear. But as the rhinestones faded, the Stetson would become an obligatory sartorial item in the country fraternity. We might credit the mercifully brief Urban Cowboy movement — spearheaded by John Tavolta’s Honky Tonk Night Fever movie — for popularising the cowboy hat, which had been sported by many people over the years but never was standard apparel in [...]
Charlie LouvinIt's an annual tradition to look back at year's end to those who've passed on in the previous twelve months. Whether it's just filler for the year's final broadcast of Entertainme

The Grim Reaper feasted on a rich harvest in October, though he thankfully et off a bit towards the end. The headline death this month probably is that of folk-music legend Bert Jansch , who influenced so many musicians – and not only folkies. Among those who cited Jansch as influences are Jimmy Page, Elton John, Nick Drake, Johnny Marr, Mazzy Starr's Hope Sandoval, Neil Young, Donovan, Blur's Graham Coxon, Suede's Bernard Butler, Al Stewart, The Fleet Foxes and Paul Simon. Clarence Johnson , who has died at 69, might have become a [...]

As we head into the tail end of the first leg of Phish's summer tour, we're sure there are plenty of people out there that are beginning to make travel arrangements for the band's west coast swing, which kicks off with a two-night stand at The Gorge in George, WA on August 5 and 6. If you're looking to take all the fuss out of finding yourself lodging and getting yourself to and from the shows each night we'd like to point you in the direction of our newest advertiser - the recently launched Bobby D-Tour . Georgians Of Montreal spice up their live cover of 'Devil Went Down To Georgia' with some mock wrestling and masked antics.

Pattie Boyd man. Has one single woman every been the inspiration for so many epic rock songs? We're talking Bell Bottom Blues ( Cover Wars ), Wonderful Tonight, Something, and believe it or not - a few others as well. Layla was released in 1970 by Derek & The Dominos on their incredible LP Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs . In 1992, Clapton rearranged the tune for MTV Unplugged and took home the Grammy Award for Best Rock Song. And it keeps going from there, one of Clapton's arrangements is just a couple of days old, at [...]
With the death of Charlie Louvin, one of the longest-running performers in music has passed on. With his brother Ira, he started performing in the 1940s as the Louvin Brothers. The country and gospel act was massively influential. Elvis Presley was a huge fan (the brothers were his mom's favourites). Ira, a racist drunk, died in a car crash in 1965; Charlie continued to record and perform for the next 45 years. Alas, the Louvin Brothers are often remembered only for the cover art of their 1960 album Satan Is Real (the story of which is HERE [...]

Independence Day comes and goes with nary a thought to most people. The more I read about history the more I admire the Founding Fathers, the men who took the bull by the horns on D-Day and the blood that was shed so I didn't have to live my life under another government of tyranny. Certain forces are still coming after our collective freedom, but chances are I'll outlast them at my age. The Fourth of July is a really cool holiday, but I don't think a lot of folks think of it as anything other than a long weekend that splits the summer months. [...]

Is February over yet? Everyone in Canada, and most likely our friends in the US capitol, gets terrible seasonal affective disorder this time of year. All things considered, its been a pretty mild winter in Toronto, but even so, after I drag myself to and from work, all I want to do is become one with my couch and hibernate under a huge pile of blankets and pillows. Is a little sunlight too much to ask for? Load up on the Vitamin D and download this month's comp from our friends [...]

Bob Dylan will turn 68 on Sunday (May 24) - and the world will pay tribute to him that day. What else can you say about this dude: he is the oldest guy ever to top the album charts (twice), he has sold hundreds of millions of records and is considered one of the most influential people of our time. Rolling Stone picked "Like A Rolling Stone" as the greatest rock song ever written, and it wouldn't surprise me if right now, at this very moment, someone in the world is singing that song. Throughout the weekend we'll keep [...]

Who doesn't love a good story?, not I, that's certain - a decent tale is one of my soft-spots in popular song, seemingly harking back to a time long before iPods, CD's, lp's and even wax blimmin' cylinders. I was planning to make this a possible series about fine, quality songs that majored on the story-telling; think 'She's Leaving Home' rather than 'She Loves You', and indeed I already posted about one of my faves by Mott the Hoople today , and I'd certainly include 'Caught by the Fuzz' from Supergrass, which I posted back [...]
