Authenticity is the name of the game in roots music, there a those that seek, those that interpret, those that emulate and those that simply sit down and let it pour out of them like Charlie Parr who's current album Barnswallow comprises eight self-penned original and a pair of traditional tracks all recorded live to tape without tracking and all using either the first or second takes - the resultant recording transports Parr and his cohorts right into the room with you in all their ragged glory. The album takes it's name from an instrumental banjo tune [...]

Nine Bullets introduced me to Charlie Parr’s music then I mentioned him to a few smarter than average people and they were like, “yeah, I’m surprised you didn’t already know him.” Hearing that kind of bummed me out because I like being the first guy to the party. (My friends also know me as the going home early guy, but that’s another story.) Parr falls into the Piedmont style of blues though on a couple of songs, “Groundhog Day Blues” & “Motorcycle Blues”, he drowns his voice inside his throat and it adds a hypnotic quality [...]
I've been highlighting a new local artist of the week for about four months now and I thought it would be a good idea to put together a recap of who has all been spotlighted thus far. The list below includes a stream of an album or EP from each artist. Looking back on it, that's an impressive lineup of artists to come out of one city. The best part of it all is that most of these artists are still considered up and comers. The Princes, Atmospheres, Replacements of the world haven't even been talked about. Talk about job [...]

Going to a Charlie Parr show is something every Minnesotan must do before they die. In fact, it's almost a requirement to actually call yourself a true Minnesotan. Originally from Austin, MN, he's made himself a state-wide legend by getting up on stage at countless bars throughout the Duluth area to make his sound heard to the people. Charlie released his first official album in 2002 and since then has released a new album nearly every year. He has a wide spread following that ranges to every corner of the earth having toured the UK and [...]
Charlie Parr might be known first for his music, but a lesser-known talent of local blues-folk star is his intrepid road warrior-esque cooking skills. It's tough, as any touring musician knows...

There's a certain aura about a big city and everything it has to offer. This week's playlist offers you a handful of songs devoted to some of the most happenin' spots around the U.S. This is one of my favorite playlists I've put out to date. I hope you feel the same. City Lovin' from MusicThatIsntBad on 8tracks Radio .
Barnswallow is country blues musician Charlie Parr’s eleventh full-length release. Parr shines again both as a performer and songwriter on eight originals which are sandwiched between traditional folk songs taught by local blues musicians Dave “Snaker” Ray and “Spider” John Koerner of Koerner, Ray & Glover. The Minnesota blues and folk scene permeates the album, informing the content, musicians (including Mikkel Beckmen on washboard and percussion; Dave Hundreiser on harmonica, and resonator mandolin; and wife Emily Parr on backing vocals), and studio as this was recorded live to tape at The Winona Arts Center. Standout tracks include the [...]

Charlie Parr has announced a new record. It's being called Barnswallow and is out in February but can already be purchased on his website now. Usually I'll only link to a downloadable mp3 but news of a Charlie Parr record has me in fine spirits so I will link to a new song via Soundcloud.

Slap-bracelet koozie // Photo by Jeremy D. Larson There's some vestiges of Magellan that still run through our blood, but the pioneering spirit in music has a habit of leading to dead ends, or sending us around in circles, or retreating toward the safety of civilization. Loathe as I am to say, there is a large circle of people who will never read this - people who don't possess that need for discovery at all, and who see music as a passive or incidental thing in their life like the hum of cicada or the refrigerator kicking in at intervals. I [...]

photo by Chad Syme Among the contenders in the every burgeoning indie folk, or new folk, genre, there are a lot of pretenders and acts trying desperately to "look and play the part", but five seconds in front of Charlie Parr and you know you're dealing with the real thing. While the Austin, Minnesota-based guitarist and singer certainly looks and sounds like he just walked out of an Alan Lomax field recording, he evokes an sense of easy authenticity even as he performs older traditionals, spirituals and songs by his own heroes like Charley [...]

Last April, Brooklyn alt-country act O'Death returned after a three-year hiatus with their fourth studio album, Outside . Recorded after drummer David Rogers-Berry's treatments and recovery from osteosarcoma, the album's 11 tracks take on a decidedly Gothic lean while exploring subject matter like loss and the unceasing presence of Death all around us. As depressing as an album motif as that may be, the band is skilled at making the subject just as beautiful and emotionally varied, as evidenced by their music video for "Black Dress". Directed by David Woolner, the [...]

With everyone finally back from SXSW in Austin, the local concert calendar also picks up significantly this week. Starting on Monday, The Magnetic Fields begin the first of two night at the Neptune Theatre, followed on Tuesday night with the Drive By Truckers at the Showbox, and local legends Mudhoney bring the noise to the Tractor on Wednesday night. On Thursday, Plants and Animals are at Crocodile, Skream & Benga are at Neumo's, Michael Gira , and Sir Richard Bishop are at Triple Door, and Yppah and Anomie Belle [...]

I am posting the February playlist a day early cause I'm not too sure I'm gonna be close to a computer at all tomorrow. This playlist features every band that was featured on ninebullets in the month of February that was also on Spotify. I hope you enjoy it and if you do, pass it along to some friends. Like I keep saying, every new pair of ears these bands reach is a potential fan/head at show. This month’s playlist features: American Aquarium, Charlie Parr, Damion Soumi and The Minor Prophets, Joe Pug, the V-Roys and [...]

I don’t fall into that line of thinking that says you have to believe in god in order to enjoy some gospel music but over the years I’ve received a few emails that would suggest some do. Typically they reduce down to, “ Dude! You don’t even believe in god but you’re (usually that is spelled your) saying you love that song. Which is it? ” My usual response is something along the lines of, “ You’re correct. I also don’t believe in killing people but I loves me the fuck out of some gangsta rap. ” Usually, that immediately [...]
