Busy Edie Brickell . In a "feast or famine" kind of way, the former frontperson for early 90's breakout band The New Bohemians (and the "what I am is what I am" hit) is back with not just one but TWO new projects (more on her stint with The Gaddabouts, due January 25, soon). The beautifully crafted January 11 solo album Edie Brickell is the singer/songwriter's first full-length recording since the 2006 NB reunion album Stranger Things (not counting the excellent Heavy Circles '08 collaboration with stepson Harper Simon) and has been [...]
Last summer, Dez Fafara of DevilDriver and I got to spend a good amount of time together while both our bands were part of the 2009 Thrash and Burn Tour, and again on the Bound By The Road Tour this past winter. There have been many hours spent in the back lounge of his tour [...]

Our pal - and associate editor of Chicago's Loud Loop Press - Andy Kahn - returns to HT with the first-ever Cover Wars penned by someone other than the column's creator, DaveO. Here's what Andy came up with... Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, off his 1984 album Various Positions , is one of those songs that seems ubiquitous but the original version rarely heard. The song plays out as an epic saga and has a seemingly endless supply of lyrics that never drag on if delivered properly. It's been covered nearly as many times as [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive A few weeks back , we caught up with emerging singer-songwriter Matt Morris regarding his widely-acclaimed performance of 'Hallelujah' with Justin Timberlake on the 'Hope for Haiti' benefit special. But that wasn't the only recent collaboration of that he's been stoked on. On his debut album, 'When Everything Breaks Open,' Morris had the opportunity to collaborate with a hero of his, country traditionalist Patty Griffin . "She's a musical force in a small [...]

Justin Timberlake teamed up with respected songwriter (and solo artist in his own right) Matt Morris and legendary guitarist Charlie Sexton at last weekend's Hope for Haiti Now Benefit show. They performed a cover of Leonard Cohen's 'Hallelujah', and I must say they did a great job. Much better than that Alexandra Burke tool. Check it out here, and if you like it, buy the Haiti For Hope Now album and support a great cause (as well as getting some great music). Watch:

In its second week of release, musician Matt Morris ' debut release When Everything Breaks Open has catapulted into the iTunes and Amazon Top 10 album sales charts. Music fans are reacting to his triumphant appearances on T he Late Show with David Letterman, CBS Second Cup Cafe and The Ellen DeGeneres Show . For Ellen, Matt was joined by a very special appearance from the album's co-producers, Justin Timberlake and Charlie Sexton . [...]

And so I'm saying goodbye to lodging on the sofas of Wordpress and Blogger, and move into my own home, with my own domain and my own armchair. Please bookmark it and, if you are a fellow blogger, amend the link: www.halfhearteddude.com The presentation here is a work in progress. Some of the things Wordpress used to do for me automatically, I now must do myself. It's a bit like leaving the caring landlord who painted your walls (but evicted you for putting a nail into the wall for [...]

Maybe it's the colder weather but I'm feeling a little more Christmasy than a couple of days ago. I'd like to see this chill continue on through the weekend, but it doesn't seem like it's going to happen. I was looking around the Internet a couple of days ago, trying to find out if the Stones had ever released any kind of a Christmas song. I know there's Keith's version of "Run Rudolph Run," which I posted the other day, but beyond that, it doesn't seem there are any Rolling [...]
There are few things in this world more hit-or-miss than cover albums. If it's a tribute compilation for a particular songwriter, some artists "get it" more than others. If it's one artist putting out their own cover album, listeners inevitably like the songs they know more than those they don't. Such is life.Compiling this list, one album after another had to be eliminated because of a single

An odd pairing? Maybe. But anytime you put megawatt pop/R+B juggernaut Justin Timberlake and renowned Texas guitarist/producer Charlie Sexton (Arcangels, Bob Dylan) together on a project together, well...just put us down as "highly interested". Set for January release , When Everything Breaks Open from childhood Timberlake chum and noted songwriter Matt Morris (and one of the first signings to Timberlake's new Tennman label) handsomely lives up to the obligatory industry buzz with a vision that appears to know no genre boundaries, easily bridging rhythmic, soulful and even bluesy pop styles with a charging and impassioned folk/pop troubadour [...]
For his second solo album in 1984, former Eagle Don Henley put away the twang of his former band and embraced the synthesizer. The result, Building The Perfect Beast , placed multiple singles on the charts and even made the poker-faced Henley an unlikely MTV star.

Rockin' N Rollin' at the Greek! You never know what you're going to get these days with Dylan but the man did not disappoint!
Bob Dylan brought a renewed energy and stage presence to his concert at Memorial Coliseum on Wednesday night.

Today is 7/7, so it seems appropriate that I post another one of them 7 song circle things. Of the lists I've created, this one is probably my least favorite. Don't get me wrong, there are some great tunes on the list, it's just that all but one of the connections are based solely on titles. I prefer to have a bit more variety throughout. Oh well. I do what I can. At least 5 out of the 7 are non-album tracks. [...]

Arc Angels at Irving Plaza (05/08/09) Photo : Jon Klemm Arc Angels played Irving Plaza on Friday night (May 8) and at least one concert goer was pretty glad she was there: A part of me wants to write "good gosh, have mercy!" and leave it at that. Those words really sum up last nights show. Doyle Bramhall II (lead guitar/lead vocals), Charlie Sexton (lead guitar/lead vocals), Chris Layton (drums) along with Mark Newmark [...]

Remember the Arc Angels ? Well, in case you don't, I'll give you a short refresher. The band was formed in the wake of the tragic death of Stevie Ray Vaughan and it consisted of Charlie Sexton, Doyle Bramhall II, Chris Layton , and Tommy Shannon (the latter two members being from Vaughan's backing band, Double Trouble ). They released a critically acclaimed record in 1992 (which I know I owned at one time) and then subsequently broke up in 1994. According to Wikipedia, the band has been performing occasionally [...]

A number of years back, The Delta Mud Skipper said, "Dude. Check out Doyle Bramhall . You'll dig it." So, I played it and remembered thinking, "Yeah. It's good," and then it disappeared from my immediate attention as I went on to something else. Sometime in the past year or so, I started thinking about that exchange and, as if I were the Millennium Falcon caught in the tractor beam of the Death Star, I was powerless to fight the pull of this album. Day by day, I neared closer and closer to Welcome until I finally [...]

Chuck is simply the most unknown yet often heard man in music. He sings, plays just about every instrument under the sun and produces records. You can't throw a rock in Americana music without hitting someone who has played with, been produced by or dated Charlie. Here is a smattering of tunes he has been involved with. As a performer: Charlie Sexton Sextet ~ Plain Bad Luck and Innocent Mistakes Charlie Sexton ~ Cruel and Gentle Things Bob Dylan ~ Summer Days [...]
