If classic French pop singers are my weakness, then Charlotte Gainsbourg is kryptonite. She's not only the daughter of Serge Gainsbourg, France's version of Lou Reed and Leonard Cohen combined, but she's gifted with Gallic melancholy—wispy melody-making that seems to run from the spotlight while keeping its place at center stage—that seems to be instilled in the French, or at least those who sing, from birth. (Although Charlotte is half-British, so perhaps there's a bit of Anglo resignation there as well.) "The Songs That We Sing" is one such number, which despite being in her English tongue loses none of [...]
Each weekday, My Morning Download introduces you to some of the coolest new music on the web. We clear through the noise so you don't have to. Meet Charlotte Gainsbourg Charlotte is the daughter of poet and musician Serge Gainsbourg and English actress Jane Birkin. Best known as an actress than a musician, she has appeared in over 30 films and has become one of the contemporary faces of French
It's really tough to separate a child from a famous parent, especially when the parent is a well renowned artist. Charlotte Gainsbourg is the daughter of French poet/singer/director Serge Gainsbourg , and much like Lennon, Dylan, Garfunkle or Marley, she will most likely be compared to her father on almost every song. He was an eccentric, erotic (often perverse) artist with an amazing amount of talent. His dark, synth driven rhythms influence a lot of today's subtle, electro-lounge artists, and now his daughter is following along the same path. An actress and singer, she is probably [...]

W e did it again, the new releases from last week took two whole episodes. Yikes! The lineup for Episode 67 of Festival City Radio is below. Get the whole show here . N ew releases for mostly April 24 (the rest) and a couple from May 1: Creepy Bill Callahan - " Sycamore " (000) Joanna Newsom - "Clam, Crab, Cockle, Cowrie" (6:30) [...]
Having read nothing about the album before my first listen yesterday, part of me grew slowly enraged as I listened to the opening notes of the title track from Charlotte Gainsbourg 's 5:55 because of just how similar the thing sounded to a really awesome b-side from Air 's Talkie Walkie . As it turns out, this is roughly the case: Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin-a.k.a. Air-actually wrote the thing (with help from Jarvis Cocker, as if you needed to be sold any further). Consequently, it should hold [...]
Having read nothing about the album before my first listen yesterday, part of me grew slowly enraged as I listened to the opening minute or so of the title track from Charlotte Gainsbourg 's 5:55 because of just how similar the thing sounded to a really awesome b-side from Air 's Talkie Walkie . As it turns out, this is roughly the case: Jean-Benoît Dunckel and Nicolas Godin-a.k.a. Air-actually wrote the thing (with help from Jarvis Cocker, as if you needed to be sold any further). The US release of 5.55 gets a lot of blogosphere-attention, which is a good thing. Thanks to Hype Machine , I get a lot of new visitors as well, some of them asking (begging, in some cases) to re-up older Charlotte-songs (from posts like this one and this one). As a rule I do not repost, but I will make an exception in this case. Because songs like the gorgeous L'Un Part L'Autre Reste (from the movie of the same title) need to be heard by as much people as possible. [...]

This is way late, but better late than never. Things have been crazy this week. Lots of noteworthy new releases. I've got about 10 of these already, but there are a few more I need to pick up. By the way, Matador recently reissued the first three Pavement albums on LP. Top Five New Releases: All Smiles : Ten Readings of a Warning (Dangerbird) – Former LA resident, Jim Fairechild was the guitarist in Grandaddy (and Earlimart for a bit too). He does the indie singer-songwriter thing on this new album. He and his band are [...]

You're sexy, you're French, you're talented. You have parents who are celebrities, an acting career, and when you feel like singing, you employ the likes of Jarvis Cocker, the guys from Air and the Divine Comedy's Neil Hannon. Oh, and...

MP3: CHARLOTTE GAINSBOURG "The Song That We Sing" ( Vice ) France's Charlotte Gainsbourg was pleasantly charming in The Science of Sleep . The same description can pretty much be used to explain her music. It has the pleasant familiarity of the odd-girl-next-door, hinted with the perfect touch of mystery. I think this weekly post needed it's own unique image. Usually I would spend so much time looking for random images to use or band pictures but I had some spare time on my hands to whip up something right quick. From my terrible Photoshop skills, this is the crappy result. If someone else would like to submit an image for the Graboid than please feel free, but this will do for now I guess. I was very surprised at how many albums I managed to squeeze into this week's Graboid as I think this might be the [...]
Minus The Bear return on Aug 21 with a new album called Planet Of Ice. The internal temperature in the blogosphere on this one is red hot, we may have to move to a shelter in the desert. Judging from the sounds of this one, they've taken a tip or two from Tom Sawyer . At least it's not Mr. Roboto . Damn this song is good. Dr. L'Ling - Minus The Bear More of [...]
Charlotte Gainsbourg's album 5:55 hits US stores today. Released in Europe last August, the US version has two bonus songs and is enhanced with 3 videos. I LOVE this album and have written about it a couple of times - it made my best of 2006 list. Here is a repost of the piece I did last December, with a little bonus action... Charlotte Gainsbourg's 5:55 was released at the end of August this
Charlotte Gainsbourg - The Songs That We Sing OK, OK. I know a lot of people have already heard all about how awesome Charlotte Gainsbourg is, how she's THE Gainsbourg daughter (Serge and Jane Birkin), an accomplished actor with 30+ films under her belt (you saw 'The Science of Sleep' right?), well known in her native France (been making music since she was 13), etc. But forget that for a sec and listen to the music. Her latest album, 5:55, is a real gem of delicate, indie-pop that is itself a star-studded affair. The record is produced by Nigel...

We jumped the gun just a bit on reviewing Charlotte Gainsbourg's stunning album, 5:55 . Although we praised it back in December, today marks the domestic release via Vice. Featuring collaborations with Jarvis Cocker and The Divine Comedy, combined with the musical awesomeness of Air, this is a great album for springtime. The kids over at Vice have offered up a free MP3 download of the track "The Songs That We Sing," which you should definitely snag if you've yet to buy the album. If you'd like a little visual accompaniment to the song, the video is [...]
