Glee's November 29th episode 'I Kissed a Girl' takes on a variety of songs from Cyndi Lauper to Katy Perry to Dolly Parton. Which are worth listening to?
Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive ER Photography Some husband-and-wife rock duos can make beautiful music together, while others can just plain drive each other crazy. Singer-songwriter Charlotte Martin admits that she and her producer husband Ken Andrews (formerly of the band Failure, among others) were in the latter pair. "When we did 'On Your Shore,' we almost killed each other," she tells Spinner. 'I think I was the first female he ever [...]

Tom Cloud started off his career with a bang, to say the least-his first single, Told You So , was immediately picked up by Tiesto's Black Hole Recordings and was included in his In Search Of Sunrise 5: Los Angeles compilation. This high-profile endorsement led to the song going to number one on the Beatport charts, a booking at Trance Energy 2008, and continued support by Tiesto. Not bad for such a newcomer to the scene. I included three Tom Cloud tracks in this post to display his versatility as a producer. [...]

There's little a humble folkblogger could add to the cultural conversation about the Rolling Stones . Heck, without a quick glance at Wikipedia, I can't even name all the players, though after three and a half decades of modern radio culture, I can certainly hum along with their radio hits. There's certainly no dearth of Stones covers out there, either. Yet interestingly, though the songs of Jagger and Richards seem to lend themselves to soul, heavy metal, and both mainstream and alt-country wonderfully, I find few covers from the folkworld in my [...]

Photo This week is eargasmic, to say the least. I've been receiving a lot of mp3s and I promise you, the ones in this post are surefire ways to pump your week. New stuff from Goldfrapp's album Head First, Joanna Newsom's 81, Hot Chip graces this blog once again with I Feel Better, Dangerous Muse, Lemonade and a recent discovery for me, Wakey Wakey, is something to check out too. Dave Wrangler also does a The xx of Stars. Broken Bells (which is The Shins plus Gnarls Barkley) is in with their [...]

I was never a real fan of goth-rock, though as I've written about before, pretty much anything that made the Top 40 in the 80s seems to linger in the minds and hearts of both my own generation and the artists it has since spawned. And The Cure was undeniably the most prevalent band of its type in mainstream mall culture when I was growing up: in my early adolescence, I dated several girls with somber black-and-white Robert Smith posters on their bedroom walls, and - looking back - can only suppose that the band's [...]
Just in case there wasn't already enough reason to support this effort: We just added Band Of Horses and Sea Wolf to the bill that already includes Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, Shirley Manson, Tom Gabel (Against Me!), Jarrod Gorbel (The Honorary Title), Charlotte Martin, Butch Walker and Songs for Kids. They will all be playing acoustic [...]

When Laura Ann Masura's longtime friend Josiah Mazzaschi heard she had been injured in a motorcycle accident, he didn't sit on his hands. He got on the phone. Mazzaschi, the frontman of local indie-rock band Light FM , has organized a benefit concert, Jam for Laura Ann, on Sunday at the Echoplex to help Masura, a fellow musician and also a bartender at the downtown's Redwood Bar, defray some $15,000 in medical expenses. The 5 p.m. show ($12) features a heady cast of performers, including the Backwards Clock Society, featuring Billy Corgan along with Kerry [...]

1. CD has updated his list of the greatest zombie songs ever , in time for Halloween. 2. It pays to browse the live music archive. It was there that I found an EP by a band called "InHuman Project." Another wonderful week in the world of music... In an atypical Five For Friday we are not going totally random because we have to make mention of the musicians (and actors) we lost this week: Patrick Swayze, Jim Carroll and Mary Travers. Bonnie 'Prince' Billy "Puff The Magic Dragon" (Peter, Paul & Mary Cover) Drive-By Truckers "People Who Died" (Jim Carroll Band Cover) Tywanna Jo Baskette "Just A Memory" [...]

Charlotte Martin has been a busy girl. Not only did she release her new EP Orphans at the end of last year, but she also had a kid. Surprising, then, to find her onstage at Joe's Pub in New York last Saturday. She just can't seem to stay away from the stage, her fans, the music. In actuality, her short three show stint (two in NYC, one in LA) was a test to see if the baby could handle life on the road. Good news: he flies well, cries little, and, apparently, has a fantastic [...]

The Cure (original version), 1987: When considering their entire catalog of depressive numbers, The Cure 's ever-euphoric "Just Like Heaven" is easily their most displaced tune. I know, a happy Cure song? If that isn't the non-sequitur of the 80's then I'm not sure what else is. For a band whose name is pretty much synonymous with downer music (god, I love that shit), this song's ironically hopeful message of love and happiness is perfect for their manic depressive fans' playlists. It's an instant mood-lifter that makes you fall [...]
