So for this Sample Sunday I wanted to post GZA's I Gotcha Back along with the original track that RZA (who produced most of the tracks on the album) sampled from. The track is called As Long As I've Got You by The Charmels. This was the same track that RZA used to on Wu-Tang Clan's C.R.E.A.M before the members parted ways. Like most of Wu-Tang's tracks, GZA's album Liquid Swords was fully produced in RZA's basement studio. GZA - I Gotcha Back Download audio file [...]

I've been digging into the Stax again lately and am just floored by Steve Cropper's versatility and style as a guitarist. His stuff on ANY given Otis Redding song would be the high-water mark for any other session musician's career. Not that he was just a session musician, mind you. Hardly a journeyman, Cropper stuck around the old theater on East McLemore Ave. from his teens in the early 60's and just past it's major upheaval in the 1970's. He was a Mar-Key, an MG, and later a Blues Brother. But Steve Cropper would never allow [...]

Djnodj has been separating the men from the boys lately, and we're not about to stop. Some of yall can't hang. I get it. Like script kiddies; you don't know what you don't know. However, some of yall are actual music lovers, and appreciate more than remixes of remixes of dj kanyecudicrookers . I'm not hating on any of that, but comeon', too much soul? Is that an oxymoron...? So here's to you fellows and felinaes... Throwback : AIR - Mr. Man (don lowed) Ps. Obvious vinyl rip here, and the [...]

Oliver Wang charts the story of the Charmels' 1967 ballad "As Long As I've Got You," which served as the backbone for the Wu-Tang Clan's "C.R.E.A.M." some 26 years later. [ NPR via yaicanstringafewwordstogether ]

Hot on the heals of their tribute to Isaac Hayes El Michels Affair's long awaited Enter The 37th Chamber rocks the bells next week. An all instrumental homage to some of Wu-Tang Clan's greatest jams, the 10 piece funk-soul brothers debuted in 2002 and have since been jamming the soundwaves with some heavy soul. Here's a tasty treat via Spinner from EMA's forthcoming album. C.R.E.A.M. - El Michels Affair Ever [...]

Album: Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers) (Loud/ RCA; 1993) Songwriters: Robert Diggs, Jason Hunter, Lamont Hawkins, Clifford Smith, Corey Woods, Dennis Coles, Russell Jones, Gary Grice, David Porter and Isaac Hayes R&B Peak Position: #32 "Cash Rules Everything Around Me/ C.R.E.A.M./ Get the money/ Dollar, dollar bill y'all" In the '60's, Stax Records and it's many subsidiaries launched the careers of a slew of notable soul figures (including Otis Redding, Sam & Dave and Booker T & The MG's), mainly with the assistance of the songwriting/ production duo [...]

This weekend's opening of army desertion drama Stop-Loss inspires today's Sunday Soul post. Please Uncle Sam (Send Back My Man) was released in November 1966 but surely its sentiment would still resonate among the loved ones of soldiers now serving in Iraq and Afghanistan. Yet the track barely resonated with anyone upon its release; it was the first of four flop singles the Charmels recorded for Volt between 1966 and 1968, relegating the vocal group to footnote status in the annals of Memphis soul. Too bad: the songs deserved a much better fate. The Charmels [...]
Comin' atcha first thing every Monday morning, it's The Pony Track, a super-fantastic long distance dedication to BadmintonStamps Collective founding member Aaron "Pony" Child. No fancy links, no clever write-ups, 'cause these awesome songs don't need no splainin'. So c'mon, ride the pony!
