The stage at Opal Divine's Freehouse in Austin is like a treehouse stationed at the end of a picnic area. For almost seven hours Wednesday at Buzz Bands LA's "Dear Austin, Love L.A." day party, nine Los Angeles bands used it as their plaything, dispensing crisp sets as if they were all on a family outing to South by Southwest. Nine SoCal bands are playing Buzz Bands LA's "Dear Austin: Love, L.A." day party next Wednesday on the first day of the South by Southwest Music Festival. It seems like 999 SoCal bands are actually headed to Austin. When we started culling music from those artists, our uploader begged for for mercy. So we called upon old friend Kay Randolph (who had storage in his Soundcloud account) to assemble "LA x SXSW x 44," a mix featuring a selection of tunes that some of the participating bands have made available for download. Everybody aspires to be a "nice guy," but if you're a musician, it's anathema to hear the phrase — the implication being that your personality outstrips your art or, worse, "nice" is merely artifice. So Chasing Kings prove as adept in the social graces as they are with their instruments. "Nice Guys," the title track off the L.A. quartet's forthcoming debut album, is a subtext-riddled anecdote about overhearing a band (who "sounded a bit like Best Coast") practicing in their garage and then meeting them. Sunset Junction, who needs ya? That seemed to be the attitude on Saturday as Silver Lake, Echo Park and downtown sprang to life on Saturday, with music venues and other businesses opening their doors to bands displaced by the cancellation of the annual street fair . Fans shuttled to and from locales hosting day- and nighttime shows, giving the Eastside a distinct SXSW feel.
