MP3: Bruno's Night Out (live) I'ma just let Columbus Discount tell it: There are a few key things that make Columbus Ohio, in a cultural sense, a truly great city to live in. We are close to many ancient Native American earthworks, we've got the Wexner Center for the Arts, and we get to see the Cheater Slicks play live about twice a month. The raw power of the Slicks in Columbus on a good night, in a dirty club at 2:15AM, playing to 15 people [...]

"Live Vol.1 20103 is not just the first live album from Ohio based garage rock trio Cheater Slicks , but the the first of three planned LPs from Columbus Discount Records . Recorded over three 2010 performances on mobile multi-track recorders, the Vol. 1 LP features eight tracks from throughout the bands nearly 25 years. This LP is limited to 500 copies, with the first 100 on clear vinyl. You can pick it up here for $16. Listen to some classic live Cheater Slicks from 1996 below! [...]
While some bands manage to slag through endless, soulless recs/tours some 20-plus years into their existence, Columbus, OH's Cheater Slicks are anomalous in their insistence to continually evolve -- to remain not only a relevant group, but a damn good one after two decades of artful scree. Indeed, 2007's Walk Into the Sea ( Dead Canary Records ) spoke of a gang who'd grown sharper in tooth. Recent tours and weekenders have been just as fierce as ever. If anything, the Slicks may be better than they were some ten years ago, when most [...]

Jimi "James" Payne posted this over on Banalization . James "Jimi" Payne For the past three years I have lived in the Monster House, a DIY punk house in Columbus, Ohio. I co-founded the Monster House with Pat Crann, Austin Eilbeck, Ryan Eilbeck, Jeff Love, Kristina Markey, Matt O'Conke, Joe Scarbro, Dylan Taylor-Lehman, and Nick Wong. A few weeks ago the last three original roommates - besides me - left. And, as of this week, I'm moving out as well. A group of our friends [...]

It's that time of year again, when grilling meat, arm wrestling, and indie rock somehow end up together in awkward sentences (like this one). This weekend is the seventh annual Columbus Discount Records BBQ, where the local label shares the wealth and gives you a wealth of local/international talent to gaze upon for as free as possible. This year's version of the tradition entails two star-studded rock shows (Friday night at The Summit and Saturday night at Carabar) as well as a multi-faceted get-together Saturday afternoon at CDR HQ (corner of Oak and Parsons, just up [...]
So there's that Ted Leo Benco show at Skully's after the much-posted-about Parking Lot Blowout on July 10 (Gibson Bros, Scrawl, Turks). And now there's also this, after the Blowout ends, at the Summit : THE OBLIVIANS CHEATER SLICKS BASSHOLES DEXTER ROMWEBER DUO (OF FLAT DUO JETS) My, oh my... Tickets go on sale June 10 at Cafe Bourbon St . (As always, the hype section of the message board is a good place to keep tabs on upcoming shows and get details [...]
What I find really appealing, not to mention refreshing, about Our Boy Roy, a garage rock tribute to Roy Orbison, is that it puts the music first. The songs first. It would be very easy (and predictable) to to treat such a project with kid gloves-an all too precious ode to a legend, carefully tip-toeing [...]

When bands like The White Stripes and The Hives began bubbling to the mainstream surface around the turn of the century and the term "garage rock" was being bantered around as hip currency despite its obvious retro connotations, there was still a whole swath of bands left largely ignored. It is this segment of the underground that Eric Davidson, the lead larynx of the New Bomb Turks and longtime music scribe for a number of publications, examines in his new book, We Never Learn: The Gunk Punk Undergut, 1988–2001 [...]

yawn..... the best (in no particular order): open strings : early virtuoso recordings from the middle east (honest jons) peter wright : snow blind (install) bassholes : and without a name (columbus discount) cheater slicks : bats in the dead trees [...]

he slips his hands under her cotton vest and her body spasms and slackens and he cups her small, cold breasts in his hands and feels the hard pearls of her nipples, like tiny secrets, against the barked palms of his hands. he feels the gradual winding down of her dying heart and can see a bluish tinge blossoming on the skin of her skull through her thin, ironed hair. oh, my dear avril, he says. he puts his hands under her knees and manoeuvres her carefully so that her bottom rests on the edge of the settee. he slips [...]

I made a cassette dub of the La Bamba soundtrack when I was in high school. The movie was pretty good (from what I can remember) and did a bang-up job of showing the early days of rock n' roll. Simpler times, simpler music, much of it with a rockabilly slant. Something about Heavy Trash's third album, Midnight Soul Serenade , makes me think of La Bamba , like maybe had the duo (Jon Spencer and Matt Verta-Ray) been around back in the '50s, they'd have done the Winter Dance [...]

Pictured: my name on a list@Ravari Room courtesy of Thee Mike O This is anti-shitty band, death of the whatever kind of genre that includes the likes of brokeNCYDE , Millionaires , Attack Attack! , 3oh!3 , et al. Look, I was a dumb kid once too and my musical taste to this day is most certainly questionable, but how in the world are people falling for this shit? Are the eight graders doing heroin these days? Fuuuuuuuuuuuuck. That said, if any of the aforementioned bands would like to be featured on [...]

I live in a nice neighbourhood. What that means, in this town, is that after 9 p.m., I have to walk a fair way to get a cup of coffee. It also means that on this walk I will see no more than half a dozen homeless people snuggled in for the night in storefront nooks, between dumpsters, and beside the shrubs outside the bank. Oh, I'm sure there are more then six of them out there, but because I live in a nice neighbourhood, only a handful are visible. I walk past the bombed out taco restaurant , [...]
