Towers is one of those albums that's hard to get out of your mind, and definitely even harder to take off of the top of your playlist. In other words, Chelan members, Jennifer Grady and Justin Hosford, cook up an excellent batch of dreamy-pop-electro-indie folk goodness that keeps the listener coming back for seconds. Towers, released at the beginning of summer, is the Joshua Tree/Los Angeles duo's third effort, which can be compared to the works of Camera Obscura and School of Seven Bells. Songs such as "Towers" and "Checked In" take you on erratic gorgeous [...]
Upon first listening to the song, the most immediately striking part of Chelan's "On the Water" I found was the hitch in the demure drum beat. For certain the overarching keyboard pulse is the dominant sound, but the drum hitch colors and empowers it. Furthering the effective confluence of parts are the layered female vocals...

Monday, July 18, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: Anyone started using Spotify yet? I think it's pretty awesome, and I'm already eager to come up with some ways to tie it into the site. The first thing I did was make a playlist of pretty much every song I've shared so far in 2011. It can be found here. Let me know if you have any other ideas! Music and words. Enjoy. : Boston Spaceships - Christmas Girl : [...]

Mid-summer you're probably craving some ice creamy-cool chill-pop to take your mind off the sweltering heat. That is if you don't live in "filtered sunlight" Portland, which unfortunately seems to be stuck in a consistently July-tober frame of mind. But for the rest of you kids out there where the sun shines, L.A./Joshua Tree's Chelan has some dream-laced electro-pop for you to cool out to. With an icy, modern take on a retro-60's French New Wave cinematic romance vibe, Chelan's Jennifer Grady and Justin Hosford dish up some [...]

After a Glastonbury inspired week off the Devil's weekly round up returns rested and raring to go... The Pains of Being Pure at Heart From: New York, United States The race for the summer anthem of 2011 is well and truly on and The Pains of Being Pure at Heart have stolen a march on the rest of the runners. Los Angeles-based Chelan's recently dropped album, Towers , and I have been thick as thieves over the last several days. In a large sense, the band swarms over me in an odd kind of way; the probably apt descriptor of 'dream pop' is a limiting concept with this duo. Equal parts lush electronics, macabre vocal stylings, and accessible pop hooks, the record has situated itself atop my playlist. Hear this, interweb friends: This is coming from a guy that will typically shy away from anything labeled 'dreamy.' I'll [...]

LA's Chelan comes at us with loopy melodies and a sound that whisks us away to places we can only touch in our dreams. Grab for it when you wake up and it's gone. But as long Chelan is on, we'll be okay. Breezy female vocals and tainted electronics give Chelan their edge, especially with "On The Water," the single off their debut album, Towers . Neil Schield is standing on Sunset Boulevard in Echo Park, smiling and saying, "I'm an oxymoron." And if you were more cynical and knew he was opening a record store , you'd think he could lose the prefix. In about three weeks, Schield is indeed opening a brick-and-mortar shop, Origami Vinyl , in a 400-square-foot space at 1816 Sunset Blvd., stocking new vinyl releases, record players and turntable supplies. And if that seems paradoxical to his other entrepreneurial half, his 18-month-old digital music label, Origami Records , well, it is. "Here I am opening a [...]

From their album Summer Machines. Chelan is the recording project of Jennifer Grady and Justin Hosford who have been making music together for over 10 years since meeting in their native Olympia, Wa. Their former project, The Waxfire, broke up in 2007 so both could move to California to pursue other avenues of creative output. Grady moved to San Francisco and currently plays with Adam Stephens of Two Gallants for his solo project and with Emily Jane White's band while also working on her own [...]

Jen Grady and Justin Hosford have made music together for over a decade now, but the Olympia duo's band The Waxfire broke up when Grady moved to San Francisco (where she's now a member of Adam Stephens ' and Emily Jane White 's bands) and Hosford headed to LA to work on music for films. Despite the distance, though, the twosome continued collaborating in a new project called Chelan , whose debut album Summer Machines was released yesterday on LA's Origami Records . [...]

As far as i'm concerned, this week's releases begins and ends with The Pains of Being Pure at Heart's debut. I've been pretty vocal about how great this band is over the past year or so, and after several singles and EPs, this album doesn't disappoint in the slightest. You won't hear a better pure indiepop album this year, so I recommend you pick this one up immediately. If you want to get a little more familiar with the band, read the interview I did with them a couple [...]

...well, at least touched down. I've arrived in Portland, but didn't get to do this week's show live, because I had to go to Seattle (actually, Bellevue) for the weekend. I won't get to do next week's show in the studio either, but May 30th, I'll be officially back in the saddle. artist - song - album :: extra info Tu Fawning - Out Like Bats - Secession EP ( myspace | @ Local Cut | Corrinna Repp | 31Knots ) [...]
