So we typically toss a video onto a post when highlighting a new band or a concert or whatever, and we let you draw your own conclusion about it. Sometimes we throw a change-up ... strike that - let’s call it a round up. These visual/aural displays were worthy of our attention, and we think you'll dig them. If a picture is worth 1000 words, then a video must be worth a million. Hold on to your hats! Words and picks by Brendan [...]

Shervin Lainez If it were as recently as last year, I would be spending this post - hell, yesterday's post - talking about how after arriving in Chicago last Saturday, I went almost straight to Beat Kitchen to see Laura Stevenson and Field Mouse play, on account of missing the Toronto show of their tour this past Tuesday because of this little vacation. But because I've grown as a person and am no longer spending all my time and energy trying to make it to shows and write about them, I have nothing to [...]

photo by Dave Lichterman Chelsea Light Moving have shared a new video for their hardcore, psychedelic rock song "Lip." This happens to be the bands first ever music video and it looks like they chose to make a bit of a political statement. The track sounds like a rebel's anthem, so it's very fitting that it features riots and protestors clashing with cops. See what you think of their first venture into videos below. [ Stereogum ] [...]

Given what we now know about Kim Gordon and Thurston Moore's breakup, we shouldn't hold our collective breath for a Sonic Youth reunion anytime soon. Instead, we should probably settle in with Moore's new band Chelsea Light Moving, who have a new video for their skronky hardcore anthem "Lip." The clip chops up band-performance footage and images of protesters clashing with riot cops. It's credited to "Eva at Ecstatic Peace Library," and that probably means Eva Prinz, whose name has been in internet circulation a bunch lately. Watch the video below. Read More...

In a new interview with Rolling Stone , Thurston Moore opened up about the future (or non-future) of Sonic Youth , his new outfit Chelsea Light Moving , and how he doesn't own a set of keys to anywhere in New York. As you can imagine, it was a very candid interview. On the potential of a Sonic Youth reunion: "I would never say I don't see why not. Life changes from time to time and who knows what will happen in the future. Your crystal [...]

"Hexxy" made its first appearance as the opening track on Speedy Ortiz's debut release, The Death of Speedy Ortiz . Back then it was called "Hexxy Sadie" (a particularly witty Beatles reference—the lead singer's name is Sadie) and it was a lo-fi bedroom recording with sloppy and distant drums and poorly recorded vocals. It was awesome back then and it is still awesome now, with Justin Pizzoferrato's (Chelsea Light Moving, Dinosaur Jr.) engineering. The song still has teeth but now they're sharpened to a point. "Hexxy" is the B-side to their just released 7-inch which also includes "Ka-Prow!". Get it [...]
I'm about as sneery when it comes to Topshop as your average daydream disbeliever made to trudge the length and indeed breadth of the eternally tedious, smog-addled aorta of central London that is Oxford Street on any given Sunday. I was mercifully spared this weekend just gone, though I spent it instead getting faintly acquainted with an EP entitled Topshop from Brightonian trio Teardrop Factory . It's their début release on black wax, yet beyond the scratched veneer of a stereotypical lo-fi aesthetic resides a real knack for the fabricating of polychromic, '90s-inspired pop ditties which belies their newly [...]

Chelsea Light Moving is a flawed album. The self-titled release by Thurston's Moore's new band is loaded with cringeworthy moments. Then why do I keep listening? It's not because of Moore's lyrics. Seemingly intended as an homage to Patti Smith and Lou Reed, Moore's good intentions frequently go awry without the editorial guidance he must have received in Sonic Youth. But those guitars… In the same way classic rock and technical metal fans adore the exhibitions of Steve Vai and Joe Satriani, I relish hearing Moore's scuzzy [...]

photo by Brittany Brassell ( view set ) "You got your peanut butter on my chocolate?" No, we got your chocolate on Thurston Moore! Or maybe it was the other way around! Either way, a simple chocolate bar wrapper was the inspiration for a brand new song, written on the spot, by Thurston and his new project Chelsea Light Moving . No doubt you've seen us rave about the album and watched their performance during our SXSW broadcast , but we invited them back to the KEXP studio for an intimate [...]

Thurston Moore' s Chelsea Light Moving recently stopped by Seattle's KEXP Studios, where they not only punched out a tight set but jammed together a new crunchy classic. Inspired by a DJ and her candy bar, Moore calls it "The Ecstasy" and it's an extension of the same popcorn fuzz and disassembled chaos that poured over their recent self-titled debut . If you're not too queasy from the coffee and fat-free blueberry scone this morning, chew on this chunk of alternative cheeba below (via NPR ). In semi-related news, Moore also has a new [...]

Bleached - Ride Your Heart (Dead Oceans) A life in the LA sunshine makes some bands susceptible to a certain brand of rudimentary slacker-pop and Bleached are one of them. Ride Your Heart is built on driving guitars, Meg White drums and sugary sweet melodies. Yes, it's repetitive and harks back to an age all too revered these days (see below), but this all-girl duo know how to compose a pop song. 'Outta My Mind' and 'Ride Your Heat both unexpectedly build to rousing climaxes, while 'Waiting by the Telephone' is both [...]
Chelsea Light Moving's self-titled release marks the first proper LP that former Sonic Youth guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Thurston Moore has released since his 2011folk-inspired solo album "Demolished Thoughts." For this project, Moore unites with guitarist Keith Wood from the band Hush Arbors, drummer John Moloney from the band Sunburned Hand of the Man, and bassist Samara Lubelski, who is a multi-instrumentalist and moderately acclaimed solo artist apart from Chelsea Light Moving. Moore takes a 180 degree turn from the stripped down style of his previous 2 solo albums by delivering a piece of work that is more stylistically in line [...]

photo by Dave Lichterman ( view set ) Anyone still lamenting the demise of Sonic Youth has clearly not yet listened to Thurston Moore's new band, Chelsea Light Moving . While not to diminish the longtime contributions of Kim Gordon, Lee Ranaldo, Steve Shelley, et al, this new collective of Moore and his Ecstatic Peace! labelmates Samara Lubelski (who appeared on his solo LP, Demolished Thoughts ), John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man), and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors) has delivered an album that could easily fit anywhere within Sonic Youth's discography of the [...]
