Back in late 2010, when Lana Del Rey was still relatively unknown and blond, she made what was possibly her first European TV appearance on Mandio Diao 's MTV Unplugged show. Backed by the Swedish rock band themselves, Lana gave an acoustic rendition of "Chet Baker" , an obscure 2007 b-side named after the jazz legend. The show was later released on CD/DVD, and footage of her segment has been floating around since, but I only managed to discover it a couple days ago. Her voice was a good fit for the jazz-tinged track, [...]

UPDATE: Thought we'd re-post some of our more popular Christmas efforts; this one gets requests every year. This was one of the coolest albums of Christmas music ever. Originally released in 1962, this unassuming little compilation featured an all-star cast of jazz luminaries like Miles Davis, Dave Brubeck, Duke Ellington and others. It was reissued on vinyl in 1980 (cover pictured above) but now it has disappeared into the mists of time. Don't bother looking for it on CD - [...]

The irony of The Hush Now 's outstanding third long-player is that while the brilliantly crafted collection completely redefines the band, Memos leaves critics with little tidy shorthand with which to bullet-point the Boston-based quintet. No longer are tags like "indie pop" or "shoegaze" -- useful in summarizing The Hush Now 's first couple records and recent, triumphant live shows, respectively -- remotely sufficient. We've mentioned previously here in these electronic pages the impressive mastery of various styles present on the mighty Memos . The combination of the band firing on all cylinders [...]

I have been saying lately that my favorite feature on this site is Picture in a Frame. I was fortionate enough to stumble upon an incredible photo of jazz musician Chet Baker asleep on the port side of what appers to be a wooden sailboat, next to his trumpet. Game, Set, Match digsters. Listen to my favorite Chet Baker song after the jump.
A defining figure of '50s west coast jazz meets up with some defining figures of '50s east coast jazz. And they make an adequate record out of it. No foolin' -- totally adequate! One might suspect that this was yet another case of a white-boy midwesterner over his head in the Big Apple. Well, one is silly. Although In New York, Baker's first Riverside LP, is fairly unspectacular on the whole -- more pleasant and vaguely familiar than far-reaching or even particularly evocative -- it's a truly interesting example of a "safe" aesthetic being surrounded by harder-edged, accomplished backing [...]

In 1978 I left Montreux right after the jazz festival and arrived by train in Grindelwald. I was backpacking in the Bernese Alps and planned to stay in hostels. I came to Grindelwald to view the north face of the Eiger. I exited the train station and hiked down Dorfstrasse to the Mountain Hostel, a gingerbread alpine inn. As I neared my destination across the street stood a blonde-haired man in sunglasses, shorts, T-shirt and flip-flops, with a well-used and waxed surfboard under his right arm. I grew up on the beach in [...]
A review of classics by Ornette Coleman, Chet Baker, Thelonious Monk, and Ella Fitzgerald with Joe Pass.
The Original Jazz Remasters Series reaches back to 1958 to find Chet Baker in New York.

Era exactamente isto que tinha em mente hoje à noite. Era exactamente isto que precisava esta madrugada. O Chet Baker é um artista ímpar. E eu nem sabia o que sentir primeiro, a foto ou a canção... This was exactly what I was in the mood for tonight. Chet Baker is something else. I didn't quite know what to experience first, the song or the photograph... You go to my head Link to photo on Flickr Massalo.net [...]
This 2010 reissue of Baker's 1958 vocal album adds a few bonus tracks to a relatively minor recording. But as always with Baker, it's about a lot more than just the music at hand. Chet Baker. Read those two words, and what comes to mind? There aren't many jazz musicians in the entire history of the form whose very name can inspire an immediate, gut level reaction among just about anyone who's heard it before. Chet Baker is one of them. Search the internet and you'll find tribute sites dedicated to the "great" Baker. But you'll also find plenty [...]

mp3// Chet Baker - My Funny Valentine

Rodgers' and Hart's 1937 showtune, "My Funny Valentine," has been recorded by over 600 artists, if we believe Wikipedia on this. Those artists include Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald, The Supremes, Nico, Jerry Garcia, Chaka Khan and many others. One of these days, we will give it the full " Noise Variations " treatment, and that's a Noise Narc Promise . But for today you're just going to hear two of my favorite renditions, one from the very beginning and the other from the very end of Chet Baker's career. [...]

I'm very selective when it comes to jazz artists, but Chet Baker is one of my favorites. What I love most about his music is precisely what he is often criticized for - his voice. Chet's warm, subtle croon and skillful trumpet playing are exhibited splendidly in She Was Too Good For Me . Originally released in 1974 and viewed by some as Chet's great "comeback," the classic album has been remastered by CTI Records for its new 40th anniversary edition. Beginning with a lovely rendering of "Autumn Leaves," this moody and romantic collection remains one of Chet's best. [...]
Can you believe that we don't even have our Christmas tree up yet? Why? Well, my wife decided that she wanted to paint the dining room (where the tree goes) before we put it up so I've been helping her paint all weekend long. If not for the painting, this post would have gone up a day earlier. Anyhow, here are some jazzy Christmas songs for your enjoyment, but don't forget there's more! Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , and Day 4 of this series. [...]

Filed under: News , New Music , Exclusive , Television On top of his acclaimed acting career, ' Bored to Death ' star Jason Schwartzman is also a respected musician, first from his days with Phantom Planet and now with his own Coconut Records project, which provided the show's noir-ish theme song. As both the star and a musician, it would seem natural that Schwartzman would have a lot of input into the program's just-released [...]
