It’s quite appropriate that Sonic Cathedral’s latest show takes place in a real place of worship. St Pancras Old Church, a thousand years on this site, is broad and tall and constructed of old stone (quite chilly as a result) so it has great acoustics; originally built for human voices to soar together in sacred expression, the building lends itself to the sort of music featured on the Sonic Cathedral label. Someplace Else, from the fine Mad Love album, is 4 minutes of charming psychedelic hypnotones: woozy keyboards, guitars melting like they're in a Salvador Dali painting, and an electronic swaddling of gentle murmurs, and all the while Christopher Porpora's wistful voice evokes thoughts of melancholy. It's very Mazzy Star and Galaxie 500 in construction, an excellent dream-invoking advert for Porposa's sophomore album.
Cheval Sombre's newest album "Mad Love" begins with the burst of a synthetic organ through the speakers into a world of soft, delicate indie caresses. Since people began experimenting with new ways of producing music in the late 1950s, there's been an alternative lineage that's run alongside popular music; you could think of it as a parallel universe where experimentation and innovation have evolved outside of the mainstream, almost as if hiding in its shadow. Cheval Sombre is the project of New York-based poet and musician Christopher Porpora. He's published two books of poetry, Becoming and In Mine Eyes . Earlier this year, he released his self-titled debut album on Double Feature Records, the new label founded by Luna alums Britta Phillips and Dean Wareham. Porpora began writing and recording tracks in the early 2000s; eventually, the recordings found their way to Sonic Boom (Spaceman 3), who ended up producing his album.
