Having rounded up most of the deaths of musicians in 2009, I'll start to do so monthly as of now. I won't include everybody who has died. So jazz drummer Ed Thigpen, who died on 13 January at 79, doesn't feature because I have no music by him. Others won't feature because their genre is meaningless to me (death metal, for ironic example). And a few will surely slip under my radar, though probably fewer than the numbers ignored by the Grammys. I will include only musicians; songwriters, producers, managers, label bosses and so on are excluded unless they also [...]
The Chicago R&B group The Chi-Lites scored big in 1971 with a couple of ballads including "Oh Girl" and "Have You Seen Her." However if you dig deep into their catalogue (and you should) you'll find this and other classics. From 1973... Stoned Out Of My Mind - The Chi-Lites

Sunshine Anderson sampled this on "Something That I wanna Give You" I WANT TO PAY YOU BACK (FOR LOVING ME)-CHI-LITES (1971)
According to the Gary Post-Tribune, Joe Jackson charged the city of Gary, Indiana $5000 to grace them with his presence at Michael Jackson's memorial service in their hometown. Mayor Rudy Clay believes that the event honoring the late singer will bring a profit to the town once all donations are counted. He said "It turned out beautiful and great and we're not using taxpayers' money so we should be given a blue ribbon for prudence." No they shouldn't after expecting profit from donations! It's unknown whether the money given to Joe and the music group the Chi-Lites was for travel [...]

While looking through the archives recently for a certain disc, I came across a self-made compilation entitled "Pure & Unadulterated Northern Soul: Volume 1". I remember that I had four volumes of this which I would use when DJing Northern Soul nights around Los Angeles. I also copied these discs for interested friends. I'm posting this compilation in its entirety here as it's as perfect a "Northern Soul's Greatest Hits!" mix as anything you are likely to find. Some of these songs are complete classics for me. I could go on [...]
Cette semaine, un post sans bla-bla (mais n'hésitez pas à réagir dans les commentaires !). On commence par un morceau incroyable, trouvé, comme les autres de la sélection, au hasard de compils "rare soul & groove". # Don Gardner : My Baby Likes To Boogaloo # ••• [ Download MP3 ] Don Gardner : My Baby Likes To Boogaloo [...]
I have to admit, most my experiences with neighbors have been either benign or horrible, not many have been the type to greet new residents with freshly baked cake, it's more along the lines of a reminder which trash cans are mine, to make sure to keep my garbage out of their bins. It's quite a difference from the childhood Welcome Wagon visits I remember my family receiving. Nowadays, I'm happy if my neighbors are quiet enough to falcilate sleep. I don't think I'll ever get over the tramua of being sandwiched in a studio apartment [...]

While The Chi-Lites ' 1971 album, (For God's Sake) Give More Power To The People , found the group dabbling in the then-hot trend of socially conscious soul, it was a record that centered in the creamy romantic balladry they were mainly known for that ended up the [...]

After a hiatus of a few weeks, we return to the age of the Afro, the glorious times of sunny soul which talked about love and preached social-consciousness. The Blackbyrds - Walking In Rhythm.mp3 If I were to set my alarm clock to wake me up with a song to start my day on a high, this might be it. "Walking In Rhythm", which was released in 1975, exudes just the right measure of confident

By 1974, The Chi-Lites (pronounced Shy-Lights) were two years removed from their No. 1 single, Oh Girl, and starting to splinter. The Chicago-based harmony group had peaked commercially but they were still producing some magnificent records, like this one. There Will Never Be Any Peace (Until God is Seated at the Conference Table) was written by Chi-Lites main man Eugene Record and his semi-regular collaborator (and first wife) Barbara Acklin, a partnership previously responsible for the group's Have You Seen Her (top-5 in 1971) and Stoned Out Of My Mind (top-30 in 1973), as well as Acklin's 1969 [...]

I was going through some old records today and thought I'd post a few... It's a bit of a pain to get these babies converted from flat licorice pizzas into fancy bundles of 1's & 0's so I hope ya can appreciate some of them... Prince has a new disc out, but I ain't got it yet... I do have this one he produced back in 1985 though... Andre Cymone was Prince's childhood pal, and both their fathers were musicians, so naturally they started a band together in high school. Andre continued [...]

First of all, I'd like to give a big shout to Knitting Factory NY for hooking us up with passes to the Slick Rick concert a couple weeks back. The Skull Snaps (as in the folks responsible for one of the most popular breaks ever, "It's A New Day") opened for MC Ricky D and killed it. One of the band members only utilized a tambourine and the occasional cooler than cool funk legend remark, and still managed to be 80 jillion times more entertaining than the average contemporary rapper. Slick Rick of course, was bananas. He frequently [...]
