![Johnny Mathis Gets (Vintage) Chic [The Vault]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1350229_lg.jpg)
I've been curious about the I Love My Lady , the unreleased album Chic's Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers produced in 1981 for Johnny Mathis, since reading about it in Daryl Easlea's Chic and the Politics of Disco a few years ago, so the news of a leak of the title track—not to mention the possibility that more of these tracks will make it onto a Chic box said to be in the works for late 2009 ( finally! )—is more than welcome. Especially given the heavy Brazilian tinge of the song, which is ripped from British [...]

Ryan (StopMe) : I've spent a pleasant week reading a stack of new books I've just bought like Marjane Satrapi's engrossing and witty ' Chicken With Plums ' and Alan Moore's unsettling ' From Hell ' ( A journey into the mind of Jack The Ripper). In-between these highly recommended reads I've found time to track down ten more new and exciting sounds and here they are: The opening line "Remember when we we're young" sets the tone for this wistful Country inflected Indie single from Dawn Landes . Take a stroll down [...]

A friend came to stay the other week who I've known for twenty years. As is the case, we spent a fair amount of time discussing music. He's been more of a dance fan than 'indie' over the last decade, though those two genres are not mutually exclusive. he's been excavating the old dance stuff, and with my love of music from 1977-1982, it's clear that this era stamped its' mark on dance just as much as indie. Having picked up an Arthur Russell compilation (on whom more to come!), I thought I would post three dance classics: [...]
Apart from the phenomenally popular Christmas mix, the first two volumes of Any Major Funk have been the most downloaded mixes on this blog. Acting on apparent demand, here is Volume 3, with a fourth installment in the works. Like all my mixes, this one is timed to fit on a standard CD-R. As before, these tracks cover the golden age of disco-funk, 1978-83. So put your hands up in the air and

I can't just sit back and look at the current state of affairs without needing to try and feel good for a second. You read this blog? You're probably someone who shares a deep sense of affliction right now based on the current state of affairs. I don't want to seem like some kind of a neo-hippie or a flipster (a flowery hipster), but I can take the heat for that - what the world needs now is love. I don't care where it comes from, what brings it about or how we get there. [...]
!["Billboard" Looks Back On Pop's Proud Tradition Of Doling Out Free Advertising [Branding]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/1250669_lg.jpg)
Billboard continues its coverage of the 50th anniversary of its flagship singles chart, the Hot 100, with a look at songs on its recently compiled all-time Hot 100 that have engaged in lyrical brand-dropping. Not surprising, there are a few hip-hop songs in the rundown ("Gold Digger," "Low," "Yeah!"), but a couple of older radio staples are also in there: the Bee Gees' "Stayin' Alive," which name-checks The New York Times ; Chic's "Le Freak," which mentions the New York nightclub the Savoy (confidential to Billboard —pretty sure the lyric is about [...]
