I'm a bit of a bird freak, I own 3 parrots and love all things avian. If I could get a sweatshirt with my Conure's face airbrushed on it I would sport it at the most important of occasions. That's why I freaking LOVE Chico Mann 's track "Pajarito". Some of you guys (Miami locals) may have caught his shows at Bardot or Vagabond which were both really good. The track is super Miami friendly with it's latin vocals and electro funk beat. Background info on the Mann: "The sounds of Africa have taken multi-instrumentalist [...]

That's the video for "Invisible Riverside," above. ► Good lineup for Indians' residency at the Silverlake Lounge — Sweden's You Say France & I Whistle , one of the highlights of the weekend's Culture Collide festival, play the late set, with locals Golden State and Public Jones setting the table for the residents. ► Youngblood Hawke continues its residency at the Satellite, [...]

It's been a big week for LA-based FoF Music, the label responsible for some recent stellar releases from Salva and Groundislava, as well as Shlohmo's debut LP Bad Vibe s, which will see a release in two weeks. Bad Vibes capitalizes on the creative peak that the label's been seeing this year, expanding FoF's historically more stripped-down aesthetic to a more flowing, experimental vocal style, heavily influenced by both electronic and hip-hop music, but also containing a notable R&B slant. As a token of gratitude to fans and a great promotional tool, the label [...]

I only subscribe to a few magazines, but by far I'm most excited when I find the latest issue of Wax Poetics in my mailbox. When it comes to diggin' out the story behind the 45 or LP that you struck gold on in diggin' out of some crate somewhere, no one does a better job than these guys. While the newstand price might seem a little steep (it's not really), I highly recommend signing yourself up for a subscription to not only get it at a better price, but [...]

Marcos Garcia is the multi-instrumentalist behind Chico Mann . He's dedicated his career to the sound of Afro Beat, including performing with Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra, but redirects his focus to Afro-Cuban rhythms on his new release. As the most played recording on KCRW airwaves at the moment, we have an exclusive download for Today's Top Tune, the track is " Mentirosos ."

Back in March, pop critic Oliver Wang posed a question to readers of his blog, Soul-Sides.com : Can any of my musicological-oriented readers out there opine on why "electro" production is appealing? By "electro" I mean things like synthesizer chords that are clearly mechanical in source (i.e. can't be created using any acoustic instrument, amplified or not). It's a great question - what's the appeal of inorganic sounds? Thinking back to that Raymond Scott collection that came out a while ago, I'd have to say novelty and otherworldliness are two big [...]

With "the groove our only guide." Those words once sung by one of the wise funk fathers is the philosophy clearly at work on the new album from Jersey City's Chico Mann on his new album due next week on Wax Poetic Records . Analogue Drift is one funky funky record. Stylistically bringing together funk, electro and Afro-Cuban rhythms, the record jams on from the first note to the last. It's filled with infectious sinewy synth-funk jams [...]

I apologize for not connecting with all of you more recently. My life has changed in the last couple weeks, including a move to San Francisco for a hot second before I make my exodus to New York City, and even a new job ! Straight from the man like Nate Mars (producer, PR, taste-maker) comes a project from Chico Mann aka Marcos Garcia, a Cuban-born musician based in New York who has toured with the likes of Antibalas Afrobeat Orchestra , plays a multitude of instruments, and makes music that draws [...]

Afrocuban experimentalist Chico Mann is releasing his sophomore on Wax Poetics soon. It's impossible not to notice from the two songs in my inbox that he's strived for more electro as opposed to his debut Manifest Tone Vol 1 . Album release on Oct. 26. "What I do is engage Afrobeat in conversation with Afro-Cuban funk, while electro and freestyle set the stage. I'm employing several dialects to make a larger musical statement. They're all branches of the same tree." Over the course of twelve [...]

Photos courtesy of When Giants Meet Not that the Spanish language doesn't have complex enough verb tenses, but we might have to make up a new one to describe what the guys of Chico Mann are doing with their music. They are giving a nod to the Afro-Cuban beats of the past – or what they could have, should have been – grounding that could have, should have in the present musical landscape, and reworking that landscape to fit into the futuristic world of Chico Mann. If you're having trouble imagining [...]

New York City is like one giant oven right now. Seriously, I could bake bread out here (the vegan kind, of course). The east coast heat wave may be due to science, or whatever, but I'm going to go ahead and say it's because of the Latin Alternative Music Conference. I arrived at the Roosevelt Hotel Wednesday afternoon to pick up my badge, and there were LAMC posters everywhere. The masked wrestler was amusingly out of place inthe midst of the hotel décor, and the entire mezzanine level was crawling with Carlos' brethren (the hipster cholos). With the [...]

Mexicans with Guns make pretty great music. I actually don't think they even need the guns, because their futuristic lazer approach to Latin music is going to make them money. Their latest 123 Me Gusto sounds like what I imagine video game music would have sounded like if made from the Latin perspective. While the original track may be too deep for some of you gringos, Ghosts on Tape put together a club version that tastefully incorporates elements of said tension and darkness. The remix and the OG are backed by 2 addition tracks and [...]

Mexicans with Guns is the alter ego of LA producer Ernest Gonzalez. After releasing his last LP, Been Meaning To Tell You , he wanted to do something different which thus led him to London and Mexico to explore the deeper side of bass music. MwG released his latest 123, Me Gusto , this week which takes some deep bass grooves and adds some Latin flava'. Plus when he enlisted the talent of Chico Mann, and some 808 percussion to give you a bangin' club-ready track. You can pick up the album from here [...]
