You could make too much of it, clearly. But still it seems significant that LMYE's Labels of 2011 (like our picks in 2010 & 2009 , for that matter) base themselves in somewhat out of the way locations. Geography surely helps explain these exemplary curators' distinct, even singular aesthetics. So too do the double lives of this year's double choice (linked by one exceptional artist). Neither is simply a conventional [...]

Ahead of an imminent-ish look at a great Australian artist whose raft of essential forthcoming releases includes one for Room40 , it'd be rude not to acknowledge another essential forthcoming release by another great Australian artist - & R40's label head. Is The Peregrine Lawrence English 's best since the magnificent, monstrous Kiri No Oto ? Or even his best, bar none? Probably not a particularly [...]
I feel like we should all be jamming out to "Right Now" (and drinking Crystal Pepsi?), because this is the day we've all been waiting for. It's time to stop living in the past and start living in the moment: my annual list of the one-hundred best albums of 2010 is finally ready for you to feast your eyes on it. Look at it. Look at it how you would a naked slut as she spreads her legs for you. It's here for the taking. As is customary now, I've decided not to write blurbs for all 100 [...]
I had no idea what Tim Hecker looked like before the start of this two day residency at Cafe Oto, and given that he played in darkness by the sound desk on both nights, I could probably have walked past him in the street afterwards without batting an eyelid. But that may be the least [...]

This is blog entry number 1968. The same year James "Sawyer" Ford was born. Coincidence? TRICK QUESTION! In LOST there are no coincidences! Oh my God, you guys - LOST premieres tonight. For the last time. I don't know whether to geek out and get all giddy, or shy away and try to hide my watery eyes. It's a lot like fathering a child, or finding the absolute best hamburger in the world. LOST is one of those things in life that can toy with your emotions on a whim, and it [...]

I haven't eaten at either Qdoba or Chipotle in two months. The reason for my epicurean departure from two of my favorite eateries is not without justification. First, I'm trying to implement a healthier diet. Yesterday morning I had a yogurt, a breakfast bar, then consumed a large bowl of Tortilla soup for lunch. Later I ate about 50 cocktail franks. My day usually begins with a health-conscious breakfast and lunch, then crosses over into foul territory as dinner and snack-time approaches. Oh well, it's the thought that counts. The second reason I haven't eaten at Qdoba and Chipotle lately [...]

"Chihei Hatakeyama is an electronic music artist from Tokyo, Japan. He released his first full-length album, Minima Moralia on Kranky Records in 2006. Hatakeyama's music is characteristically very slow, composed by repeatedly processing guitars, pianos, and vibraphones on a laptop. The result is a mix of droning chords and sparse single instruments rising above the mix. His music may be classified as either post-ambient experimental music or New Age music. "Hatakeyama's debut US album is a meditation on silence. The albums works as a series of vignettes or meditation exercises. Each track title is a specific [...]

New five star selection starts off with blissful ambient/drone by Chihei Hatakayema and advances to The Seasons ' Tsu City off their 2009 album Undone . We shift gears with Italian composer Alessandro Alessandrini 's Palance off his OST for 1976's Sangue di Sbirro , then an amazing song by Renato Lu from the Black Rio 2 compilation I talked about here, last one by Downtown persona Arto Lindsay off his 96 album Mundo Civilizado . Happy Fourth of July, everybody. Enjoy your day. Drink safely. Don't drink and drive. And if you do, make sure you call the local police and report other drivers as drunk drivers, so as to divert police attention from you. • A day or two after running one of the most unprofessional sports columns in the history of journalism, they've published an article about all the falsehoods of Independence Day. Like, for example, how it's not actually supposed to fall on July 4th, and how the Declaration of Independence wasn't signed until it had been copied - and [...]

Hi friends. It's been an eventful 48 hours. My bank account has been frozen by Bank Of America, leaving me with...$12 in cash that has to last me until my new debit card arrives this week. Supposedly there was "suspicious activity" reported by Mastercard, but when I called to ask what happened, I was told that they were not allowed to reveal what the activity was. I called bullshit, and they held their ground. So, really, I don't know why they froze my assets. Maybe someone got ahold of my account information, maybe they didn't. We'll never know. I just [...]

Chihei Hatakeyama Dedication (09.2008, Magic Book Records) Verdict = Marvelous Dedication is the second solo outing of Japanese soundsmith Chihei Hatakeyama and possibly one of the most beautifully magical releases I've heard…ever? It certainly makes a case for that type of a statement. Anyone who heard his debut album, Minima Moralia on Kranky, must have surely noticed the already incredible talent of Mr' Hatakeyama. On that release Hatakeyama seemed to be subtly carving himself out a unique place in the widening spectrum of ambient sound. [...]
Ex-Trenchmouth drummer, current weekly funnyman Fred Armisen contributed to last night's Tomorrow Show. Today I walked around town today, stopping at Sea Level to buy some half-priced albums before they close their doors. Tonight there was good home-cooking (or so I imagine, I ate a pizza while everyone else labored over the stove and oven) followed by an all-too-brief barbecue/party at a house in the Echo Park hills. Truly it was a good weekend. This is where I'd express dissatisfaction at tomorrow being Monday if I actually had a job...but I don't. So I can talk about anything! Unfortunately, I [...]

Chihei Hatakeyama's latest solo effort, Minima Moralia, is a minimalist, electro-acoustic album that is intended to evoke specific images and experiences in the listeners mind. To keep it short and simple, it's a very ethereal, almost existential, experience. To produce the sounds heard on the album, Hatakeyama recorded acoustic instruments such as guitar, piano, vibraphone and then prcoessed them multiple times through his laptop.
