This coming Friday will be a "who's who" showcase of the Bay Area's finest in female folk-rock. We have ex-Sleepy Sun co-vocalist Rachel Fannan , who was in my opinion the driving force behind the band. Her solo material (formally called Birds Fled From Me) is lighter and more experimental than her previously desert rock Goddess persona in Sleepy Sun. Listening to the loose and lo-fi recording of The Pressure is an exciting glimpse into what one can expect from this impressive vocalist. In addition we have [...]

We're still figuring things out on BEB, in case you haven't noticed. We're still new kids on the blog, so we figure we still get a pass on stopping/starting new things without warning. Lately, we've been trying to focus on new ways to discuss music that not everybody is talking about yet. We decided to start doing "Introductions" posts to talk about some of the new artists we're finding without limiting our posts to one song or video. A bit more than a traditional "Listen/Watch" post anyway. That was probably pretty redundant. Anyway, moving on. [...]

Alright, just back from a mini-vacation out to Vancouver. I didn't have much time to listen to any new music while I was gone so here is what I am loading my ears with this morning. Enjoy! From the Chaff (in reference to this idiom ) is a semi-regular series where we post things that might have otherwise slipped through the cracks. Whether it’s singles, EPs or just MP3s that we like, it’s a place for us to collect the things we’ve heard lately but haven’t had a chance to write about yet. ![[Folk] Chloe Makes Music – The Duel (feat. Christopher Chu)](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3312328_lg.jpg)
'The Duel' is, rather fittingly, a duet between San Franciscan rising star Chloe Makes Music and The Morning Benders' singer Christopher Chu, and what an absolute joy it is. With gentle guitar providing a relaxed and emotive backing to Chloe and Christopher's beautifully interwoven vocals, 'The Duel' will resonate with anyone who has ever been madly in love. This extraordinary track has the potential to soundtrack moments of great romance both on and off the silver screen, and should gain Chloe Makes Music a place in many, many hearts. 'The Duel (ft Christopher Chu)' is featured [...]
![[MP3] Chloe Makes Music – “The Duel (feat. Christopher Chu)”](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3308151_lg.jpg)
From the same trusted studio source that brought the attention of The Downer Party to my ears comes "The Duel", by Chloe Makes Music, including vocals from The Morning Benders' frontman Christopher Chu. Chu actually produced the debut Chloe Makes Music record, The Puppeteer , which was released in January. Chloe is a gentle vocalist, playing off strong acoustics, and you can tell she and Chu work well with each other. He brings his smooth baritone in "The Duel" to complement her delicate soprano. The voices blend together seamlessly, with the strings adding the little [...]

[So much to share, so little time ...] ► Dolorean , "The Unfazed" (widget after the jump) — Title track from the Portland, ore., band's last album of drop-dead gorgeous Americana. They're playing the early set tonight at the Satellite in support of Castanets and Holy Sons. ► Typhoon , "The Honest Truth" — Also out of Portland, these orchestral rockers just released an EP, "A New King of House," that's a [...]

This sleepy, lovely, mellow, calm-inducing track found my internets and climbed my playlist. Though I don't know a lot yet about Chloe Makes Music, or it's contributor, Christopher Chu - if her album ends up being this good, it will surely be a winner. Take a listen to the track below. "Chloe Makes Music feat. Christopher Chu - The Duel" xoxo, alyssa

Friday, February 11, 2011 Today's Quick Mention: Plenty of good little shows this weekend. Tonight you could either catch the Long Tangles at Jovita's or the Heartless Bastards at the Ghost Room. Tomorrow I'd recommend Follow That Bird at the Mohawk or Sorne at the United States Art Authority. Have fun! It would seem as though today's song has been floating around for a bit, but I wanted to bring this crazy week to a relaxing close and it's was [...]

Pals, it's time to add Chloe Makes Music's "The Duel" to your ongoing 2011 female-fronted folk playlist. (You have one of those, right?) The San Francisco singer's latest single is a collaboration with the Morning Benders' Chris Chu, who produced her upcoming album, The Puppeteer . (Chu, apparently staking out a second career, also produced excellent L.A. indie-pop kids So Many Wizards recently.) He plays it cool vocally on "The Duel," leaving Chloe the showier role as acoustic guitars and cello dance around her. Her voice is damaged but hopeful, a teenager finding love again after a first heartbreak. [...]

Tweet Live This Month: February 2011 In Live This Month , we sample some of the great local and out-of-town bands performing in the coming month in the San Francisco Bay Area. February can only mean one thing in Bay Area indie music: the annual and much celebrated Noise Pop Festival, now in its nineteenth year. There's so much good Noise Pop stuff that we'll be devoting a separate podcast to it in a few weeks. Before the fest, [...]

For the first time since I've been going to Cafe du Nord , it was silent during the sets. Since it was Monday, there wasn't a rowdy bar crowd and both Chloe Makes Music and Sam Amidon fully owned the quiet. Singer/songwriter Chloe set the tone for the evening with her spare and traveling songs, pairing the naive quality of her voice with minor chords and dark narratives. She played tunes from her upcoming release The Puppeteer [...]

In addition to manning the boards on The Puppeteers, the debut solo LP from San Francisco’s Chloe Roth, aka Chloe Makes Music , producer/Morning Benders frontman Chris Chu lent his instrumental and vocal talents to the 6-day project . Enlisting a lead singer from one of this year’s biggest breakout indie bands is a fun way to attract fresh ears to a young artist, sure, but if their effortless twee chemistry on duet “The Duel” is any indication, Roth’s incoming record should avoid any name-dropping collaboration labels nicely. Folk-pop duos (Jenny and [...]
