Take this one to your after-hours club. Just in time for L.A.'s annual Francophile feeding frenzy — the OohLaLA Festival — the new duo Tomorrow's World has released its debut EP. We say new, but you might know the principals; Tomorrow's World is the collaboration between Jean-Benoit Dunckel of Air and London-based singer Lou Hayter (New Young Pony Club). Their electro-pop noir is both edgy and sleek, a duality captured well in director James D. Kelly's video for the single "So Long My Love." ||| Live: Tomorrow's World plays [...]
It's Mother's Day this weekend, and while we love our mothers here at Flavorpill as dearly as anyone, we do get more than a little tired of the wave of Hallmark-card sentimentality that comes with the second Sunday in May. So we thought we'd commemorate the day with something a little darker than yet another list that features Tupac's "Dear Mama" and Paul Simon's "Mother and Child Reunion" — instead, we thought we'd look at some of the more sinister and disturbing songs about mothers and/or motherhood over the years. They're better songs anyway. [...]
Clarence Bucaro - Recalling the laid back folk/soul vibe of early Van Morrison and the pensive and personal lyricism of Jackson Brown, the Brooklyn-based tunesmith has quietly carved out his own special niche of singer/songwriter: a strumming acoustic romanticism tempered with a classic R+B undercurrent of Hammond B3 fills, rhythmic bass lines and gospel inspired harmonies...New highly personal and politically inspired fifth album is his first since 2009's exquisite Til Spring // Release : Walls of the World (April 3, 20/20) // Sounds like : New album taps two [...]

CHOCOLATE GENIUS ON WEDNESDAY FEB. 23RD AT THE BOOTLEG THEATER, 2220 BEVERLY BOULEVARD, LOS ANGELES. 9:00PM/ $15/ 21+

We first heard Chocolate Genius when we were living in Seattle back in the summer of 1999. He was a guest on David Byrne's program Sessions From West 54th , and he blew us away with his distinctive vocals on the heart wrenching "My Mom"(below). Since then, Marc Anthony Thompson has taken the Chocolate Genius moniker through a number of iterations, landing on the current Chocolate Genius Inc. That's the name that Thompson has applied to his collective, and their subsequent work over the past few years. Regardless [...]

I'm sorry, but when I get something in the mail from an artist with the handle Chocolate Genius Incorporated , I'm expecting funk so filthy it'll make Bootsy blush. Surprise, surprise. Marc Anthony Thompson is playing it decidedly more folky than funky. And honestly, when you're as talented as Mr. Thompson, you should play it exactly as you see fit. While not a household name, Thompson has landed some cherry gigs in recent years, including singing with Sade's band, Sweetback, directing the Devil's Halo video for Meshell Ndegeocello [...]

Friday, July 30, 2010 Today's Quick Mention: My weekend is only going to feature me dealing with moving logistics, but if you make it out then I advise catching Quiet Company at the Parish tonight and Robert Francis at Emo's Jr. on Sunday. So, after thinking about it for a bit, I've decided that it would probably be best to put the weekly podcast firmly in the category of "things I used to do when I had more time." Sorry. On the bright side, I'm still planning [...]
I apologize for the lack of original, fresh, mind-blowing content the past couple days, but we're in the middle of some changes. Turns out, we're doing better than expected, and Chill Milk is going to need to expand. Thank you for all your support, dudes. In the meanwhile, here's some minimal love from Linus Loves: [...]

Excited to hear that Marc Anthony Thompson will be returning with a new addition to the Chocolate Genius saga - Swan Songs , on August 31st. Swansongs is the final chapter and extension of 19982s Black Music , 20012s Godmusic and 20042s Black Yankee Rock . As Thompson puts it, "Gracefully embracing decay is the constant theme. Letting go. The curse of religion. The passion is the poison. That old dilemma—worship and penance; sparkle and fade; bass and trouble." "Reluctantly, the book of songs is done," says Thompson, who also dabbles in [...]

Filed under: Video Doveman 's newest video for 'Breathing Out' may look sparse at first, with two shots making up the entirety on the video. But when one listens to the lyrics, the melancholic quality of Thomas Bartlett's voice and the placid sound of the piano, this video immediately makes sense. The main idea behind the shots in this video is motion. Most of the video is comprised of a passing landscape (first seen only in red, then changed to color) that is seen through the eyes [...]
