Chris is a singer-songwriter who isn't afraid to pepper his acoustic tunes with horns. Lovely vocal harmonies. Studio tricks. Stuff like that. All adding up to pleasant music perfect for warm Tuesday mornings. From Fanatic Promotion : So good it's scary... Yeah, there are plenty of singer/songwriters out there, but in a sense that's what makes a record like this so special. How does an individual rise above the multitude of those toting acoustic guitars? For the past two years Chris Bathgate has done what few are able to accomplish in a lifetime: created a sound that is entirely his own and transfer every ounce of his talent into one of the most emotionally inspiring albums to see the light of day in years. Produced by [...]
The Thomas Tales, Tape I, Take II: Chris Bathgate is a solo musician from Anne Arbour (spelt correctly) on Quite Scientific Records. Quite Scientific is based in the same city and puts out friends records, etc but most importantly have a solid line-up of artists like Chris himself, CANADA, and I Am A Bolt Of Lightning. This song is great, and he is touring Michigan! Michigan! Michigan! Chris Bathgate - A Flash of Light Followed By

There's so much good new Summer music out that we had to go to 14 tracks this month. Rest assured they'll all still fit on a CD-R for your cruisin'-down-the-shore pleasure. Turn them up, hang your left arm out the window like McConaughey in Dazed & Confused , pull your aviators down, and punch it. you couldnt have asked for a better lineup last night at the earl and in the end it was one of the best shows i have ever been witness to. opener and fellow atlantian, ben trickey's 45 minute set was stunning in its simplicity. just a man, a guitar and a handful of [...]

Chris Bathgate grew up in Pecatonica, IL and started playing music when he was 16. Quite Scientific is released his third album A Cork Tale Wake on June 26th. He offers an intensity both with his vocals and lyrics. You can tell this just be hearing him talk or seeing what he writes. His MySpace page says, "i write songs some are simple some are not some are nostaglic some come from dark places some are written from your perspective some from mine some switch [...]
A Flash of Light Followed By By Chris Bathgate Album: A Cork Tale Wake Label: Quite Scientific Genre: acoustic Tags: acoustic, fuzzed out, indie Download : MP3 Audio A simple, short acoustic number with a fuzzed out ending. Chris has a good voice but doesn't over use it. Nicely done.

Release Date: 06.26.07 It is pretty mind boggling when it comes time to sift through our mail, searching for albums to review. The sheer number of male singer songwriters is actually quite staggering, which almost caused Chris Bathgate's A Cork Tale Wake to get lost in the shuffle. It must have been the artwork of Susan Fawcett that caught my eye, again proving that album covers are still mighty important. For starters, this is a damn good sounding album. Bathgate's vocals are full, the drums are robust, the strings [...]

For the first time in a long time (possibly the first time ever?), I've found a semi-local artist to cover. Chris Bathgate is from Ann Arbor, Michigan, which is about an hour north of Green Clothes HQ, and is a lead player in the local folk scene (if you've ever been to venues such as The Ark , you'd know that they sure love their folk up there). After putting out two self-released albums, Chris got with Quite Scientific to release A Cork Tale Wake , his newest release. Whether playing alone [...]

While I'm DJing the latest round of the Knockout shows on Friday, Pop Tart's faves Beat Radio will be headling a show out in Long Island City at The Creek and the Cave. Featuring performances by Great Lakes Myth Society, Chris Bathgate, and I Am A Bolt of Lightning, this show would certainly be on my list of things to do if not for afforementioned gig. As a big fan of Beat Radio I can't help but promote this show despite not being able to attend it, and as a bonus I'm going to give one lucky winner [...]

I am becoming quite the slouch on updates lately, so I'll have to do another post right after this one and make this month's mix incomparably huge. Because remember kids, if you can't have quality, then go for quantity! But enough about my shortcomings. Chris Bathgate isn't always your typical folk musician, which is fortunate, as otherwise he would probably be quite boring. While Buffalo Girl isn't going to win any awards for jauntiness, it's got enough instrumentation to keep you awake. I Know How You Are Going To Die Tonight [...]

Hi – this is Josh Bloom , president of Fanatic Promotion writing. With the proliferation of the MP3 culture, the era of the album is giving way to the single again. While I love to linger with a singer, I also love to mingle with a single. And thus, this post entitled MINGLE WITH SINGLES . With this, I intend to give you a peek into new bands on the Fanatic roster that are getting a lot of spin time on my personal iPod . These include: ahead-of-time tunes [...]

I'll be writing more about Chris Bathgate (already here and here ) over the coming months leading up to the release of his new record, A Cork Tale Wake , on June 26. There are two reasons for this: #1 is that Chris is one of my favorite new artists. #2 is that on June 22 he'll be playing the Songs:Illinois House Concert Series (past performers include Rachel Ries, Anais Mitchell, Ox, Steve Dawson, The Cankickers and Otis Gibbs). Here's another song off of [...]

If you haven't guessed, my non-blogging yesterday coincided with the fact that it was sunny and nice here in Wisconsin, and more importantly, that the NFL Draft was taking place. There's so much that could be said about the draft and the picks teams made, and I'm sure in the months leading up to the start of the NFL season you'll hear about how each team's pick panned out (see Reggie Bush last year) or didn't make the cut (see Tim Couch, 1999) as rosters slim and teams get ready to put together their squads for the season. [...]
Chris Bathgate ( here , here ) is in the news quite a bit lately. First, one of his songs is featured on the Yer Bird compilation Folk Music For The End Of The World . It's a great little comp that puts a bunch of indie folk artists of like minds in one place (Chris' contemporaries on End Of The World are J. Tillman, Hayden, and The Gunshy). Secondly the great little label (or not so little depending on how Canada's This Cursed House sold through) Quite [...]

Those that have heard Chris Bathgate's new cd, Thoatsleep, have been effusive with praise, admittedly though that's been a very small group of people. As one fan of Chris' laments on his Myspace page and I paraphrase: "how is it that Throtsleep has had multiple international reviews but not one yet in the states, let alone in Ann Arbor?" I first wrote about Chis here , when I was on a bit of a Ypsi/Ann Arbor jag. It seems that this situation is likely [...]
