Midterms finally came to an end; and when we collectively wandered bleary-eyed out of the depths of Lau, we realized autumn was upon us. Just as we began wrapping ourselves up in jackets and scarves and digging into our favorite pumpkin-flavored goodies, we found the leaves had changed and fallen and mid-November was here already. We were late for fall. But a few leaves are still clinging to the branches, and autumn's got at least one more weekend of clear blue skies and crisp temperatures left in it. WGTB suggests you savor it while you can, and we made you [...]
Hailing from the small university town of Ann Arbor, Jonathan Visger's solo project Absofacto produces a delightful sound that reconstitutes the ghosts of indie rock's past into something vaguely infectious. If one were a lazy music critic and decided to use that "if (blank), (blank), and (blank) were put in a blender/sat next to each [...]

Sad news this weekend on the passing of Amy Winehouse . Clearly she was a talented yet troubled lady. What's been even more disturbing is some of the coverage of her demise. Interestingly, in her death, Winehouse joins the '27 Club' . A group of superstars who had the world in their hands only to see it all slip away through various means of self-loathing, addiction and over indulgence. Just what is it [...]

There *is* a documentary on legendary 70s Memphis powerpop band Big Star coming sometime this year...yes, you too will be able to hear the ins and outs of the story behind that band that just didn't quite make it huge in 1974 when it should have. It seems like the new doc will be made up of a lot of tribute footage from the 2010 shows at SXSW right before Alex Chilton died. There's footage in the trailer/screener below with The Posies' Ken Stringfellow and Jon Auer, [...]

So what [...]
Oh, folks. Have I got a tale for you. As a matter of fact, now that I'm thinking about it, I don't have a tale for you. Because words cannot accurately render how incredible last night's screening of The Room was. It was without a doubt the greatest movie-watching experience of my life. Setting aside the beers at Golden State, the beers at Surly Goat, the bottle of wine consumed while waiting in line, or the bottle of Jack Daniels consumed in the movie theater, I haven't laughed that hard in God knows how long. If [...]

Blame this post on a recent revisit with my Replacements collection... When I was a lot younger, MTV actually had shows about music. I stumbled upon this 12o Minutes feature on the great Alex Chilton: I think I've posted this before, but here's Paul Westerberg performing the Replacements' tune, Alex Chilton, solo: And here's a great feature (Audio only) on Big Star and Chris Bell from [...]

If you like Big Star , and we most certainly do around these parts, then you probably know that Alex Chilton's counterpart in the band was one Chris Bell. The two were co-frontmen in the eventually doomed 1970's quartet, but not before they made some of the most formidable power pop that the world has ever known. After the band's demise, Chilton went on to a long solo career, and eventually reunited Big Star. Bell however, wasn't quite so lucky, and (sadly) died in a car crash at the much-to-young age of 27. [...]

Chris Bell: You And Your Sister Chris Bell: You And Your Sister [country version] [ purchase ] The song has high potential as a sappy power ballad, as evidenced by the ultimate posthumous release of the so-called "country version" and the even cheesier "acoustic version" of the song. But the original offers raw redemption, with Chris Bell's broken delivery and slightly off-tune bass holding it together until the highly orchestral, swirling atmospheric bridge kicks in and [...]

Filed under: News , R.I.P. It's been a tough year for Big Star . In March, leader Alex Chilton tragically died of heart failure. And now, just four months later, the legendary power-pop group lost a second member on Monday, when founding bassist Andy Hummel passed away at the age of 59. A third member, Chris Bell , died in a car crash in 1978, five years after officially leaving the group. That leaves drummer Jody Stephens as the last man standing. [...]

I've been a big fan of Tommy Hoehn's ever since I bought his 45 of "Blow Yourself Up" on the seminal Memphis power-pop label Powerplay. I was very sad today to hear of his passing. Someone had left a comment on this blog awhile back that he was ill, but I didn't know for sure until I got the news today. Here are various folks including Tommy and me tackling Alex Chilton and Tommy's co-written power-pop classic "She Might Look My Way". She Might Look My Way - Tommy Hoehn.mp3 [...]

A couple of weeks ago I was window shopping in Glasgow when I chanced upon a wee stall selling replica football tops and assorted football related t-shirts - Scotland Argentina '78 -inspired designs and the likes. Unfortunately, the Celtic-inspired tops seemed to be the best - the Ramones logo re-done with the names of the Lisbon Lions, the Dylan 'Subterranean Homesick Blues' video where Bob discards 3 cards saying " It's A ", " Grand Old Team ", " To Play For ". Umpteen Larsson tops. That sort of thing. Amongst all the Archie Gemmell and Old [...]
