Oklahoma's Other Lives is a fantastic band, which is probably why Radiohead plucked them out of the Great Plains and gave them supporting dates on its 2012 takeover tour. Lush, pastoral, and y... Continue reading "Other Lives, Chris Botti Lead This Week's Show Announcements" >

A great collection of holiday favorites, boasting terrific vocals.
Can you believe that we don't even have our Christmas tree up yet? Why? Well, my wife decided that she wanted to paint the dining room (where the tree goes) before we put it up so I've been helping her paint all weekend long. If not for the painting, this post would have gone up a day earlier. Anyhow, here are some jazzy Christmas songs for your enjoyment, but don't forget there's more! Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , and Day 4 of this series. [...]
Armed with his eponymous debut EP, John Nagle is aiming to find out if jazz can still be received well if it took on a modern edge. While the release is not perfect, there are moments that remind us Nagle is on to something. If he can maintain the riveting balance of pop and jazz found on the EP's highlights, his upcoming full-length could be everything you wish contemporary jazz was: stylish, suave, and actually entertaining.

Filed under: All About Jazz Christmas music is as much a part of the holiday season for many of us as the decorations, trees and presents. It comes in two forms for the most part: the stuff that is played every year at home, and the stuff that provides forced ambiance of cheer that can seem way too ubiquitous from Halloween to New Year's. Of course, tastes vary, and one family's classic can be another's atrocity. Jazz is rife with Christmas music of both varieties. A stone cold classic for [...]
On the fourth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, four calling birds... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. These are perfect for a quiet holiday evening drinking red wine, bourbon, or your drink of choice while snow is falling outside and the fire's burning inside. Anyone know if Ornette Coleman ever recorded a Christmas song? That would be a treat. MP3: Dexter Gordon - The Christmas Song Vince Guaraldi Trio - O Tannenbaum Sonny Rollins - Winter Wonderland [...]

I've never spent Christmas in the Caribbean or anywhere warm. Perhaps that is why I've always been drawn to ska and reggae versions of Christmas songs. As a a fan of both skiing and snowboarding, we generally head towards the mountains around the holidays if we go anywhere at all. So for all of you cold weather people (including me on this freezing snowy night in Chicago) here are some jazzy holiday songs to warm you up a bit. MP3 | Dexter Gordon - The Christmas Song [...]

The original MOKB Covers Project post of Hallelujah has been dead for many moons, but it is still one of the most commented on, linked up and talked about posts we've put together here at MOKB. I've promised many a reader that I would one day re-host all the files for everyone to enjoy. We revisited the song and found a plethora of new versions since last we posted it. There are even more we saw but couldn't find. As always , if you have a [...]

W ho doesn't like a little jazz for Christmas? I think these are perfect for the season and will go will with any sort or mixer you can think of. They are even great straight up, no chaser. Chris Botti has impeccable tone when he plays the trumpet. Truly gorgeous. These party tunes are a little like Ray’s “Till The Sun Turns Black†( read review here )…made for an intimate moment with a lover. Although the CD cover leaves something to be desired. What’ll I Do (featuring Paula Cole) No Ordinary Love Let’s Fall In Love Someone To Watch Over Me How Love Should Be (featuring [...]
