Just another Wild Weekend , and the beat goes on. Here's edition #51, bringing you rock from Detroit, lofi psychedelica from Brooklyn and roots reggae from the island. And we dig up the unjustly forgotten Jerry Riopelle. Get wild or get even. Saint Julian Cope's been busy again, this time compiling an inspiring 38 song list - with fitting over the top commentary of course - of Electrifying Edisonian Rock 'n' Roll from sixties and seventies Detroit. Which doesn't omit certified greats like the Stooges and the [...]

Of all the musicians I've been introduced (and reintroduced) to via my scribbling here at MOKB, South Pasadena's Chris Hickey is easily one of my favorites. A folk-rock Jim Jarmusch, this cat is a criminally under-appreciated artist, whether with band (Show of Hands, Uma), as hired gun (Joe Henry, Michael Penn, Indigo Girls) or as solo artist. And I have to believe there's a parallel universe in which Hickey is in high demand as a Super Bowl halftime performer. What a droll and wonderful world that must be. But there's an [...]

Once more, I find myself staring at the ass end of a year, wondering, "Is that all there is?" I could try to explain my thoughts about signing on for another go round the sun, the uncertainty, anticipation and ennui, but Chris Hickey beat me to it. Way back in 1997, Hickey's band Uma released Fare Well . That record contains the song New Year's Day (Stephen Hawking) , the impetus of which Hickey explains as follows: I saw Stephen [...]

Always good to hear from the low-flow folk king of South Pasadena, Chris Hickey . Ever the Htrae Axl Rose, Hickey continues to amuse and amaze with his straight-to-digital voice recorder output. Today, we're happy to direct you to a cover of Liz Durrett's We Build Bridges as re-interpreted by Hickey and St. Paul native Sally Dworsky . Even if Sally's name doesn't ring a bell, you've likely encountered her singing with artists like REM, Peter Gabriel and Don Henley, or perhaps [...]

Beautiful Struggle mp3 (Borrowers cover) written by Mark Addison, performed by Chris Hickey and see the nice write up of him over on Fingertips I'm on my way over to North Coast Fest again today, it was awesome yesterday! Grace Potter and The Nocturnals were the highlight of my day. And while I know being outside in such lovely weather is supposed to make a person happy, it only makes me cranky. I'm weird like that. I sort of hate nature. It gets all sunny and breezy and [...]

Chris Hickey may be the bizarro Axl Rose. Entrenched in the bedroom of his South Pasadena home with little more than a guitar, a digital voice recorder and some discipline, Hickey created Razzmatazz (2009) for less than the mercurial G-n-R frontman spends on weekly cornrow maintenance. Last year, Hickey was good enough to allow us to share Kerouac , a touching tribute to the enigmatic soul who inspired a million ill-fated roadtrips, and over the weekend he delivered the video for Places To Go , a talking blues paean [...]
Singer-songwriter Chris Hickey doesn't fall for fads or trends. While synth pop electronics seem to be all the rage these days, there's something to be said for simple and straightforward. With just an acoustic guitar and his voice, Hickey's cover of The Borrowers' "Beautiful Struggle" is evocative and reflective. Sometimes less is so very much more. Listen to Hickey cover "Beautiful Struggle" with a free download.

Sometimes a week just gets away from you. Here it is Saturday, and I haven't had a chance to post anything yet. As I try to get out the door for a family gathering, I'll keep the yakking to a minimum and celebrate a week's worth of mornings. The Move: Mist On a Monday Morning [ purchase ] We'll start on Monday, with a dark bit of British psychedelia from The Move. [...]

Since becoming affiliated with MOKB, I'm never more than a day or two from being completely overwhelmed by email. I'll be honest, I get a lot of crap, but I try to make a point of listening to any and all submissions that come directly from musicians. It's not that I have anything against reps; far from it, but my affinity for the underdog naturally draws me to musicians whose passion (or stubbornness) compels them forsake assistance, and slug it out in the music biz unaided. Tonight, [...]
