Note: this is one of a series of "lost" posts originally slated to run in late 2011. We will be running these over the next few days as we reboot the site content. [ download ] I realize that for many people reading this, the idea of describing a song as sounding like a deconstructed, funhouse mirror version of Sugar Ray’s “Fly” is probably the very definition of damning something with faint praise, but that’s not my intent at all. I heard “Fly” on the radio for the first time in [...]
Letcher's over-indulgent sophomore release is occasionally stunning, but borders on inaccessibility. Chris Letcher is an ambitious young South African musician, and his sophomore follow up Spectroscope reflects that. Spectroscope is 10 beautifully lush tracks (and two ridiculously pretentious ones) that run the gamut of alterna-pop-rock to experimental sparse piano ballads. It doesn't always work, but you are always intrigued with what has guided this impressive college-friendly go-getter. Chris released his debut full-length Frieze back in 2007 to glowing reviews and an abundance of college radio airplay....

It's Saturday morning. Be still, my woeful head. How to stop the throbbing? The best medicine turns out to be London-based South African Chris Letcher 's snoozy pop: it has a soothing, close-the-curtain quality which works perfectly for my swollen temples. This is alternative medicine in both senses - quirky sound arrangements trip over folkish melodies while the vocals are chatty and muttered, like certain Bright Eyes tracks, between uplifting keys swoops. London-by-way-of-South Africa singer Chris Letcher 's Frieze has been getting a few spins around the Idolator flophouse lately, particularly the opening track "Deep Frieze." "Deep" is a dense, gorgeous piece of pop that brings to mind an amaglamation of Ed Harcourt and "My Iron Lung," and it's a worthy introduction to Letcher, whose intricate songs only get better with each listen. (Here's hoping Letcher's aesthetic rubs off on collaborator Dave Matthews, and not the other way around.) Chris Letcher - Deep Frieze [ MP3 ] Chris Letcher [MySpace]
THIS WEEK'S FINDS July 8-14 "Deep Frieze" - Chris Letcher Smartly put together and sharply produced, "Deep Frieze" offers a gratifying union of acoustic, electric, and electronic sounds, linked beneath rich, almost choral-like vocalizing. A crisply strummed acoustic guitar lies at the heart of this midtempo rocker, but other rewarding guitar sounds come to fore as well, along with a battery of good-natured knob-twiddly noises. I like how this song feels so ornate without actually wasting a whole lot of aural space: it sounds very layered and yet you can easily, at [...]
Here's a selection of half finished, hair-brained posts that I'm completely not happy with. That said, the songs found within do have merit. Enjoy. Aside from being slipped in to a Largehearted Boy post from November there hasn't been much coverage of the upcoming record from Low Low Low La La La Love Love Love . Depending on your source the release date is either April or June. The band is British and they play a messy brand of indie folk. They'd never popped [...]
