Kelp Records is 16 years old. If only Think About Life was on Kelp, then they would be singing "Sweet Sixteen" for them. For those out of the loop. Kelp Records is a Ottawa based music label and its home to various artist like Jim Bryson , Andrew Vincent , Chris Page , The Acorn (who still calls Kelp home). Its becoming an annual tradition celebrating the label's achievement and to have fun with the music. This the second year now that the shows will be taking [...]

Douglas Wilkinson Okay, so I spent (too) much of yesterday in planes and airports and places, in general, not conducive to blogging so I am essentially taking today (or took last night) off to get my head together a bit, and am going to just toss this up for now. As announced last week , I'm proudly co-presenting the Toronto stop of the Kelp 16 anniversary tour, marking the fact that the Ottawa-based label is now old enough to drive. To help celebrate, we're having Cleveland cult hero singer-songwriter Bill Fox [...]

Last.fm So apparently there's this guy - based in Ohio but sings with an affected British accent, played in a band with his brother for a while, has a habit of writing amazing pop songs and recording them onto 4-track cassette and is worshipped by those in the know. I'm talking, of course, about Bill Fox . Why, who were you thinking of? I actually can't pretend to be one of those aforementioned "in the know", however. Prior to a few weeks ago, the first I'd heard of Bill Fox was via [...]

February 16, 2010 was the official release for Chris Page 's A Date With A Smoke Machine ( Review ). He did an in-store session at Compact Music on Bank St. Just simply Chris doing his songs solo. Using the electric guitar and later on with the acoustic guitar. He played one old song. The rest were from the new album. Despite being at noon there were some people who were there to hear him play. Don't worry Chris will be playing [...]

There's definitely a restraint to the songs on Chris Page 's new solo album, A Date With a Smoke Machine , but don't take that to mean the songs are in anyway restricted. Page's work with Camp Radio or The Stand GT may be rooted in punk and rock, but on this solo album he's let his inner singer-songwriter out for some air, and he's certainly breathing deeply. The more I listen to this record, the more it reminds me of prime Billy Bragg, like Worker's Playtime, an album of fierce intensity [...]
As far as my ears are concerned, yesterday was the first major multi-album new music release day of 2010, so it's past time for my annual list of what I'm looking forward to in the months ahead. I've included albums with solid dates, some with ballpark estimates, a few that are mere whispers on the wind. Oh, and a couple of pure fantasies. A boy can dream, can't he?Keep in mind, this is not even

Since 2009 is coming to a close. I should really need to review Chris Page 's album before its release date which is February 16, 2010. Another hidden talent in the Ottawa music's scene. After seeing his nice wonderful set back on November 20, 2009 and at Pop Montreal . A Date With A Smoke Machine is his second solo album. This year Chris Page was nominated for Best New Artist for the Xpress Reader's Poll. Which got some people scratching their heads or making [...]

Taking a day off from the Best-of (tomorrow will be the EPs and TRUST ME, you will want to tune in for a bucketload of unreleased/new songs) to give Kelp rocker Chris Page some much deserved love. Every few months, I randomly get upset about the fact that the Pager hasn't delivered a new Camp Radio record in a few years, tweet the label like a smart ass and get on with my day. About a month ago, Jon replied with some news: Page has a new solo record and the new Camp Radio record is [...]

On November 20th I went to Cafe Dekcuf. Three acts were playing and its theme was mostly male solo singers. Well make that two and half since Mohawk Lodge did had a backing band. Also playing was Male Nurse and Chris Page. I was kind of under the weather that night. Overall it was a nice show. Male Nurse was interesting to see live as always. Chris Page who was nominated for Best New Artist by Ottawa Xpress's Best Of 2009 Poll. He put on [...]

Raw Sugar Cafe is beginning to be Ottawa's hubcentre for Music Coffeehouse. YOWzas! was created for OCFF to show off what Ottawa has got to offer in the music scene. It was a nice afternoon of great music while you have a nice cup of coffee or tea. It was hosted by Kelp Records and Beaus. Playing there were: That's The Spirit Matt Ouimet (who replaced Sarah Hallman) [...]

I've been asking for a new Camp Radio record for an eternity now... but to no avail. The power punking trio is one of the most fun bands you'll find here in Canada. They write catchy, straight ahead hooks than make you move and every day we wait for new songs is one too many. Looks like I'll have to settle for a new solo record from Chris Page instead. The front man for the band is back with another one-man journey and the track listing shows some new material and some [...]
