Chris Pureka The music of Chris Pureka plays like a long, serene drive in the middle of a deserted countryside. There are no pretenses. No fancy bells and whistles. Just bare honesty and solid storytelling, all performed by a woman who seems to have lived far beyond her twenty-seven years. At the age of sixteen, New Englander Chris Pureka learned to play guitar, but during college, Pureka focused much of her studies on science. Still, after graduation, an unrelenting pull for music ultimately won out over a career in a laboratory. [...]

I guess I've been living under a short bus, because I didn't discover Jay Brannan until Wednesday night when I saw him at the Highline Ballroom with Chris Pureka (who I assumed was male when I saw her name on the ticket). In case you're wondering what kind of music they play, Pureka gave a better description than I could when she said, "Jay Brannan and I are pretty similar. His songs are sad and depressing wrapped in joy and my songs are sad and depressing wrapped in sad and depressing."* It [...]
After getting directions to "the ferry" from my TomTom, I drove for about 2 hours to "Staten Island". The reason they are in quotes is because TomTom (which I am getting rid of ASAP) gave me directions to where the ferry lets off... in NYC. The whole reason I was taking the ferry is because I cannot drive in the city, it is too frustrating. So after about an hour of being lost in the city (oh, did I mention TomTom doesn't work in the city? The buildings throw off the signal) we found a parking garage and ended up [...]
"Chris Pureka's sophomore release, Dryland plays like the way she enters a room: with low, deliberate airs, quietly demanding respect. One stark, solo acoustic guitar builds into layered swan songs and raspy serenades that resonate with unassuming depth and candor." Quote from her myspace page. As long as I can remember, it was while browsing Gregory Alan Isakov website, that i've been clicked to Chris Pureka website. I'm sure most of you are already addicted by this unique artist but I can't resist sharing this recent discovery - better later than [...]

Editors note - A multi-day long battle with spammers over this blog has ended just now (I hope). I'm back in charge of this blog and the spammers who stole it are now being held at bay. Thanks to the whole blogger team for fixing this mess in a timely manner. I was just telling a publicist for a decent sized label that I won't review anything that's been out for awhile as I'm trying to focus on new music that people may not have heard yet. Well, today I'm going to break [...]
