Here at Carry You Away, we like mixes. Now that I have a car with a CD player, I really like putting together a collection of songs to fit a particular driving style or mood that I find myself in, and go from there. Recently, I got to thinking about movie soundtracks and how a lot of the hipster, indie films often have this sort of attitude - a mix-tape is generally just as good when it comes to a film. [...]

Every now and then I get on a Black Crowes kick and I have to play all their songs in a row. I just set my iPod to “All songs” for the Crowes and let it go… well, seeing as I’ve not only got all their albums, but a BUNCH of bootlegs, you can imagine how long it’d take the iPod to get through the entire playlist. I kept going back to this live performance of “Midnight From the Inside Out,” though. [...]
Part four! This time: Songs Written Before You Were Born I started my life as one of those weird kids in high school wearing a Beatles t-shirt, etching the Who logo on her binder, drawing various members of Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young in art class. I still think that some of the best music was made between the years 1966 and 1972. Here's some of that music, recorded by some great acts of more recent years. Of special note is Gibbard's Monkees cover, noteworthy for the following reasons: 1 – Gibbard dedicates the [...]

What better way to rebuild one's credibility than with the Friday Five? Fun as it was, the two straight days of New Kids-ness had me feeling more than a little impure and with that in mind, we turn to one of my favorite monthly series. This month we're taking a look at something we've done before on these parts, albeit in rather piecemeal takes -- rock star's offspring. And I'm not talking about the Liv Tylers, Stella McCartneys and Ione Skyes of the world that get to find their own fame in other fields, [...]
Chris Stills will be treating New Yorkers to a live show next week, opening for Caitlin Cary of Whiskeytown, at The Living Room on Thursday November 8th. Check out new track "When The Pain Dies Down," sounds like a lost cut from a Ryan Adams album, blending plaintive piano and sweeping strings, and providing a moody introduction to the sanguine melodies and ornate instrumentation carried throughout the album. Singer-songwriter Chris Stills is, as some of you may know, the son of Stephen Stills and French pop musician Veronique Sanson. The story behind Chris's most recent album is becoming an all too frequent tale in the music biz: Artist gets signed, labels goes out of business, artist can't find a home for record. So, after some tribulations, Stills' record is finally being released in the States and
Sports Note #1: Well baseball season is over here in New York. I was only able to predict a single series in the playoffs and that was the advancing of the Red Sox. I think the World Series will be Boston and the Rockies and I hope to god a National League team wins it at this point. The one good thing about the Yanks being eliminated, at least I won't have to worry about missing a Yankees vs. Red Sox game during CMJ next week. Muzzle of Bees has a handful of questions with [...]
***Here's a nice "Loving Hands" remix of Dappled Cities ' "Fire, Fire, Fire" that kind of makes me wish I liked to boogie. Like, if I ever did, I'd certainly want this playing. It's like the slow mo version of what those crazy club kids do. Dappled Cities - " Fire, Fire, Fire " They're hitting the road, but no plan to come to Atlanta. But, if you happen to be lucky enough to live in one of these spots, try to catch them. Oct 11 2007 - Crocodile Café - Seattle, [...]

It’s always disappointing when great albums get lost in a label reshuffle, and Chris Stills’ self-titled second album was one of the many mislaid when V2 closed its American offices earlier this year. Fortunately he was determined to find a way to share this stellar collection of tender, lovelorn songs with US fans and has just released the album digitally on the independent JKC Records . Chris recently played shows with Ben Lee and Rachael Yamagata and is planning more tour dates through Oct/Nov. Fool For Love.mp3 [...]

Did you ever get the feeling that you've stopped chasing the things you really want to instead settle for the things you know you can get? I got chewed out for that last night. It's not really too much of a surprise -- more and more people close to me have been noticing the pattern of behavior becoming decidedly prominent over the past year and have pointed it out to me on multiple occassions, but whenever they used the word "defeatist," I retorted with "pragmatic." That whole "Dream Big" philosophy works well for some [...]
