Mark Meatto, Director of How to Grow a Band BY FRANKLIN P. LAVIOLA Back in 2008, filmmaker Mark Meatto went on the road with Punch Brothers , the not-quite bluegrass quintet led by mandolinist Chris Thile, former frontman of Nickel Creek. The resulting film, How To Grow a Band , captures Punch Brothers in the months surrounding the release of their debut album Punch . The band has [...]

• Facebook • Twitter • Delicious • Email • RSS The Punch Brothers are rolling into Kansas City today to play the Beaumont Club - but my job today isn't going to convince to go to their amazing show. Because I honestly think, if you ever were going to go to a Punch Brothers show, you're already going tonight because you know they never fail to deliver. My job instead is to make sure you don't miss out on The Milk [...]

Punch Brothers have announced a new EP for next month. Not content with giving us the pleasure of excellent bluegrass long-player Who's Feeling Young Now? earlier this year, the EP will be released on November 13th. Ahoy! is a collection of five b-sides from the Who’s Feeling Young Now? recording sessions, produced by Jacquire King. The EP includes three covers (“Another New World” by Josh Ritter, “Down Along the Dixie Line” by Gillian Welch and David Rawlings, and “Icarus Smicarus” by Mclusky), the band's arrangement of the traditional tune “Moonshiner,” and an original instrumental [...]
Thoughts on Shows by Todd Harrington The Scene: The MET Pawtucket, RI - 10/3/12 It has been quite the year for these Brooklyn, NY, bluegrass players. Elton John sang their praises in Rolling Stone. T. Bone Burnett called Punch Brothers, "One of the most incredible bands this country has produced.” In recent weeks, member Chris Thile was awarded a half million dollar [...]

As we've dutifully pointed out a number of times around these parts, 2012 marks the 50th anniversary of The Rolling Stones . While the band is still playing coy on whether they will actually celebrate this milestone on stage this year, the iconic band's time on the big and small screen will be the subject of a new multimedia exhibit at New York's Museum of Modern Art . Set to run from November 15 through December 2, The Rolling Stones - 50 Years On Film , will feature [...]
Filed under: News , Exclusive , Holy Hell Nonesuch Keeping a secret isn't easy, but Punch Brothers frontman Chris Thile had no choice. While traveling with his parents in Kentucky, the singer received a call that would change his life -- except that he ignored it. The ringing continued over time, and a dramatic message was left urging Thile to pick up the call. It was apparently of "great importance." [...]

myworldmusicfriends.com Chris Thile Mandolin maestro, singer, and composer Chris Thile , has been named a MacArthur Fellow. Thile was among the 23 new MacArthur Fellows for 2012, selected by the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation. The annual fellowship, often referred to as the “Genius” grant, offers an unrestricted award of $500,000—$100,000 for each of the following five years—to individuals who, in the Foundation’s words, “ have shown extraordinary originality and dedication in their creative pursuits and a marked capacity [...]
I just heard on NPR that Chris Thile is one of the 23 people to win this year's MacArthur genius grant of $500,000. Not only that, but the first few times they called to tell him the good news he didn't accept the call because he thought it was going to be a political robocall. [...]

Guest Post By: Brendan The Punch Brothers have transcended the Bluegrass genre and enter Radiohead territory on their latest album, Who's Feeling Young Now? The instrumentation on the opening track "Movement and Location" is truly astounding, reminding me of U22s "Where the Streets Have No Name." The album's title track has an almost hip-hop beat. [...]

Although not typically what we at Listen Before You Buy cover, I thought I'd take a moment to discuss the insanity seeing of the Punch Brothers at The Basement, because good music is good music, and these guys ROCKED. The Punch Brothers are pretty popular amongst bluegrass fans and fans of the folkier side of indie rock back in the States, but as this was their first Australian tour, their fan base is much smaller, so as opposed to playing a large concert hall, as they tend to do back home, they [...]
It’s just what we needed. And Chris Thile is always just what I need.

While Chris Thile is barely into his thirties, he's already had a lifetime of experience in the music industry. He began taking mandolin lesson at age five, by age eight he was performing with the an early incarnation of his longtime band Nickel Creek and at age 12 had won the national mandolin championship. When Nickel Creek called it quits in 2006, after 5 studios albums and a Grammy win for Best Contemporary Folk Album, Thile began working on his solo album How to Grow a Woman From the Ground , recruiting a new band that would [...]
I stumbled upon this yesterday, amazingly while on a random site that profiles upcoming documentaries, with which I have a time-consuming obsession. ** While I've spent a fair amount of my life in love with whatever it is that Chris Thile is throwing down, I was so happy to see this. Even better was the commentary from the dude who discovered this just as I did, by stumbling over the top of it. He'd never heard of the Punch Brothers and yet, after watching [...]

Punch Brothers at Red Light Management Party at Stubb’s at SXSW (03/15/12) Photo : Chris Becker Big things are happening these days for Chris Thile and his band Punch Brothers . First of all, if you're reading this on Saturday ( Mar 24 ), you can catch Chris Thile's Mandolin Concerto tonight at the venerable Carnegie Hall . In addition to tonight's Carnegie Hall gig, the band will be playing a proper show with Jesca Hoop [...]
Chris Thile & Bella Betts Let’s just start with the fact that Bella is 11 year’s old. Usually Chris Thile, of Nickel Creek, is the featured player in a bluegrass tune, but it’s hard to take your eyes off of Bella. She just rips through this, and meets Chris for the melody near the end like a pro. Incredible. This is a musician who’s got a long career ahead of her.

It's been a long haul these last couple of weeks, with new projects and courses to teach at work, and budget season fast approaching at the local school committee table. School vacation was cancelled, and the skies and ground remain dry as a bone despite the calendrical claim of New England February, leaving us grey and wan in the pale light of almost-winter above the equatorial line. And here at home, the stress is sky-high, thanks to an unfortunate incident at the beginning of the month that turned us into a single-car family struggling to make ends and [...]

Chris Thile is a monster of modern music. A rare talent, Thile is known for his constant progress, taking his skills and voice into new territories with every endeavor. The mandolin virtuoso has released 19 full-lengths in the last 19 years, while working with renowned artists like Yo Yo Ma, Béla Fleck, Dolly Parton, Jack White and Steve Martin, among many others. In 2009, he debut his mandolin concerto Ad astra per alas porci with the Colorado Symphony Orchestra, later to be played in as many as 10 high-profile orchestras across the country. He released two highly acclaimed [...]
