Sad Bastard Sundays is a moment of zen, a moment of slowed down listening. Songs from wanderers, troubadours, and musicians for moments when a 4/4 beat and laser light shows are not required. I am Sandy at Slowcoustic and I hope to bring you over to the dark side - the songs might not brighten your day, but they might be the best song you have heard in a while...again, if only at half speed... Today gets a bit of [...]

I was recently reminded of this tribute album from 2004 from a fellow blogger and Last.fm member (you know who you are!!) and so I started listening to it again. I found that I still really like many of the tracks, like really like them. The tribute is currently available on iTunes in a condensed version, but it is the 2 disc limited release that is the real catch. With only 500 copies, it is well out of print and only available in digital form circling various websites. Don't get me wrong, the current available release [...]

Last year, J. Matthew Gerken, Christian Kiefer, and Jefferson Pitcher penned some songs about America's founding fathers and beyond. The sprawling folk project proved to be an undertaking so large that they enlisted the help of many musician friends - ranging from Califone to the AON-approved These United States - to see it through. The [...]

So have nothing to do this Saturday? Live at least close to Eastern Seaboard of the United States? Well I have an event for you! Anyone who knows me, knows that I am a fan of Christian Kiefer and thanks to the internet, we ended up being friends. Well we have never met, but our paths have crossed many times and I consider him a stand up guy, someone who I would support when needed. This is that time, Christian Kiefer and friends are having a bit of a "Songs for Presidents" concert this Saturday in Washington D.C. [...]
Congratulations to Magnolia Summer , whose song about President William McKinley, "Czolgosz's Dream," was one of three featured as a download on NPR Music's story about Of Great and Mortal Men . (For reference, the other tracks featured are about Herbert Hoover ("Woe Is A Spoon-Shaped Heart, featuring Marla Hansen) and Jimmy Carter ("A Great Beam of Light," which features Rosie Thomas).) (McKinley) This three-CD collection, as we talked about earlier in the summer in our interview with co-writers [...]

(the presidential trio) With the 2008 presidental election rapidly approaching, it's entirely appropriate that a trio of songwriters -- Christian Kiefer , J. Matthew Gerken and Jefferson Pitcher -- has collaborated on an ambitious project: a three-CD boxed set featuring a song about each U.S. president. (Move over, Sufjan Stevens and your state project!) Called Of Great and Mortal Men: 43 Songs for 43 U.S. Presidencies , the collection is admittedly a dense body of work, something to digest slowly and carefully over time, rather than [...]

Besides the Okkervil River album, there are two other artists I have discovered recently that I've been enjoying a lot. One is a guy I discovered on Pitchfork, named Christian Kiefer , who lives in Northern California and is a fiction writer as well as a musician and songwriter. Kiefer has put out several albums that are stylistically all over the map, from avant-noise to blues to folk. His new album, Dogs and Donkeys , (available here ) is what I would have called alt-country ten years ago. (It actually reminds me of one of my favorite [...]

There is a certain kind of song that I love and do not quite know how to explain them other than calling them "wake up songs." Songs that build, but build very gradually and never explode they just sort of become realized, if that makes sense. I have spent a good amount of time compiling a definitive mix of these songs, which are all part of a 50 song playlist that is played on shuffle each morning to wake me up. I think you will enjoy these a lot. The Voxtrot song I featured in this mix really [...]

I'd like to tell you that I love the new record from Christian Kiefer on Undertow Records . But I haven't heard 90% of it so I can't really say. But going on Christian's previous releases, the quality of stuff put out by Undertow, the sample song below, and the guests he's enlisted on the record (Garth Hudson, Alan Sparhawk, Mimi Parker and Nels Cline) I can at least predict good things. "White Clouds" from the new record, Dogs and Donkeys , is the sad tale of greed and conspicuous consuption. This [...]
