Over the years, music evolves and changes in a lot of ways. Unless you're solely looking at mainstream music, its evolved pretty dramatically... particularly in the last 3 years. But every time I hear someone refer to a band as 'emo' it still pisses me off. Mostly because it never bears any resemblance to bands who were initially labeled 'emo' during a time when there was no description for it. You see, back in the mid-to-late 90s when all rock was 'alternative', distinctions had to be made when a particular group of bands had a general sound that stood apart [...]
Influential emo/indie group Christie Front Drive have announced a reunion show at Brooklyn's Bell House on Saturday July 30th. Tickets for this show are on-sale

>> The news is going stale at this point, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mark the passing of beloved indie-pop luminaries The Answering Machine . The Manchester, England-based foursome posted a handwritten letter to its web site Monday morning disclosing that -- after six years -- its members have ceased making music collectively and under the The Answering Machine brand name. A vinyl release of the band's recently issued sophomore set Lifeline [ review here ] -- previously rumored to be announced this spring -- will now be realized as a [...]

Christie Front Drive was an American Emo/Indie band formed in Denver in 1993. Citing influences such as Superchunk, Jawbox, Buffalo Tom and Drive Like Jehu, the lineup consisted of Ron Marschall (drums), Jason Begin (guitar), Kerry McDonald (bass) and Eric Richter (guitar and vocals)... Despite their short tenure [ 1993-1997 ], Christie Front Drive became a major influence on emo music in the 90's. Richter resurfaced in the bands Antarctica, The 101, and Golden City, and both Marschall and Begin went on to form The Blue Ontario. Marschall was also credited as an engineer on the [...]

It's almost that time of year again... that's right, Thanksgiving is just around the corner with the rest of the holiday season following hot on its heels. It's good to be back to regular posts just in time for the holidays. Food, family, friends, and drinks. So, last year I posted an awesome roast turkey recipe , and this year I wanted to post my mom's vegan pumpkin pie recipe, but I have no idea where it is. So here is one of my other favorite pie recipes (courtesy of my mother)... and some songs. Heck, [...]
:: Tom Gabel released the album artwork for the new Against Me! album , and it's kind of NSFW. :: 10 grand for the 10 billionth song from iTunes . Not a bad deal. :: New season of Yo Gabba Gabba! means more indie rockers making hyperactive kids get on adults' nerves even worse. Then again, I do that to my wife with no help at all. :: Metal Underground recaps the last decade of metal - running the gamut between kvlt, tr00, NWOAHM, nu [...]

Above is the art for the magnificent sophomore full-length from Oslo-based post-rock standouts Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson . The act enlivens the increasingly tired post-rock formula by blending in the urgency and immediacy of second-wave emo; think Christie Front Drive and Mineral (one of the songs from the new album curiously references Weston , too, although we don't hold them in quite the same esteem). The seven-year-old septet's Youth Pictures Of Florence Henderson is a limited edition double-disc set packaged in an A5-format , 32-page hardcover book in one of [...]

With Thanksgiving now less than two weeks away, I figured it was about time to repost my tried and true recipe for brined and roasted turkey. So what if I ganked the original recipe from the amazing Alton Brown a few years ago. I've made enough delicious changes that it really feels like mine though. I'm still thinking about the possibility of cooking something else a little less traditional for Thanksgiving... something like a Bacon Explosion perhaps. (Yum!) And my mother's vegan pumpkin pie to balance it all out. Oh yeah! Here's the recipe: [...]
by chuck bell Most people have probably never heard of Christie Front Drive . They existed for less than 3 years, and did not even release a proper full-length while together. However, despite the fact that the band never even came close to approaching the mainstream, they managed to heavily influence several bands that have sold millions of records. Having been equally influenced by the post-hardcore angularity of Jawbox and the melodic alternative of Buffalo Tom, Denver natives Ron Marschall (drums), Jason Begin (guitar/vocals), Eric Richter (guitar/vocals), [...]

The rains in DC are not ceasing, and if they keep up much longer, I am probably going to actively seek out just how big a cubit is. While my aversion to umbrellas means I end up sitting down with wet pants everytime I go outside, the rain brings some upsides. For instance - April showers bring May flowers (leaving me and my new found allergies in a pollen induced stupor), and these day make the rainy, springtime soundtracks permissible. Antarctica's double-disc masterpiece "81:03" (the run-time of the album), has long been a favorite rainy day soundtrack of mine. The [...]

Motion City Soundtrack keyboardist Jesse Johnson has decided to sell his record collection via eBay , and he's donating 10 percent of his earnings to the Dear Jack Foundation . For those not in the know (such as myself), Dear Jack was started by Jack's Mannequin vocalist Andrew McMahon after he was diagnosed with leukemia. Johnson only has records through the letter "J" up at this point in time, so it's unclear as to whether or not he plans to list more albums - or if he has a strange obsessive [...]
Oh no he didn't. Eric Richter (of The 101 and Christie Front Drive fame) has taken yet again to the realm of ridiculously catchy indie pop songs with a new group called Golden City. The Brooklyn-based foursome pen tense and melodic songs that infect your head immediately, spreading like a wildfire throughout your bones and blood, muscles and tendons, right into your heart, cycling again and again with each listen. Now, we're not sure if you know, but in the mid-to-late nineties, when we just high school kids with sort of bad acne [...]

"Who is this '.hopesfall.' you speak of?" IGN has a good list of indie rock releases that should have gotten more recognition when they were first released. Here's what they said about my favorite of the list, Hum's Downward Is Heavenward : Despite all of the guitar histrionics, Hum always had gorgeous melodies and top-shelf songwriting just beneath the surface. A song like "If You Are to Bloom" foreshadowed the amplifier crunch and honeyed vocal line recipe current acts like Brand New and [...]

The days of me traveling long distances for a "fest" are long gone, but I was really tempted to make the trip out to Colorado for "DenverFest 33 to see the Christie Front Drive reunion show. I first heard CFD after I picked up their first 123 on Freewill Records on the recommendation of someone who was selling merch for Neurosis. It was one of the best records I picked up that year. I had the opportunity to see them the summer of '95 with Jimmy Eat World in Minneapolis and it was such a memorable show. This song was [...]
>> Have you been saving your sheckles for the big new release day tomorrow? We'll likely step out for the new Interpol set, hoping that Newbury Comics is offering it at a good discount. In our estimation, however, the biggest release is the new Spoon set, Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga , which we've been listening to daily since the promo arrived. A truly superlative effort, wall-to-wall, song for song, with typically tight, deconstructed pop songs and really engaging production. Our pre-order arrived Saturday. It was packaged with the bonus disc Get Nice , [...]
Way before what teens today think of as emo, the term was shorthand for emotional hardcore. It was not a dirty word that referred to the lifestyle that gets so much negative press these days. Originating in the Washington, DC music scene of the mid-1980's, some so-called "first-wave" emo or emocore bands included Rites of Spring, Embrace, and Moss Icon. Then came Fugazi (featuring ex-members of Rites of Spring and Embrace), Jawbox, and so on from there... This is (according to me) a brief history of emo in music only. Yes, it will be incomplete in some [...]

(Jawbreaker at Gilman Street, sometime in the early '90s; photo from San Francisco Audio ) When did we start referring to old school rap as old school? I mean, back in the ?80s, ABC rhyming/boom bap/high-top fades/four-finger rings were on some next shit. Surely, nobody was referring to any of it as ?old school? back then. Reason I mention this is cause I?ve been listening to a lot of emo from the ?90s lately ( Jawbreaker , Sunny Day Real Estate , Texas is the Reason , etc.). [...]
