Christopher Bell had a great idea: he'd cover song written by his friends, so this EP is a collection of songs that you probably won't be familiar with but should be. This is a fine group of five folk tunes that bring to mind the Cold Mountain or Oh, Brother Where Art Thou? soundtracks. In fact, these songs have a lot in common with the duo of Robert Plant and Alison Krauss with their beautiful harmonies and old-fashioned folk sensibilities. They are bare-boned, simple arrangements that take advantage of Bell's talent as a multi-instrumentalist. [...]

Video: Vimeo - YouTube Photos: Flickr - Blueback Hotrod Audio: below Shenandoah Davis plays the piano, and needless to say, we don't just happen to have one in the house. So given she was on a Summer tour of Europe, and given we'd invited her to Edinburgh to record a Toad Session we needed a Plan B. That Plan B came in the form of Penicuik Town Hall. Our friend Ben comes from Penicuik and his dad was able to secure [...]

Christopher Bell recently released his new Cover EP on Silent Home Records. It's 5 songs by diverse songwriters from across the country covered in his own style. String trios and quartets amended with trumpet, banjo, ukulele and percussion. Bell's music is very captivating. You can't help but pay attention to the music. Robert L. Sinclaire Pretty Thing

This podcast is a little bit random, I have to say. There are songs which follow on from the like folk/hate covers posts which have appeared over the course of the last week or so on the site, a couple are related to the fact that Mrs. Toad is once more away in God Bless America shooting illegal aliens, chewing gum, whistling Dixie, or whatever the fuck it is they do over there, while most of the first half is related to the fact that my friend Andrew is coming to visit this weekend. They do sort of [...]

From Upstate NY, Christopher Bell is a chamber music influenced, Folk/Alt-Country multi-instrumentalist. He blends guitar and banjo with plucked and bowed viola, looped and sampled live. He has recently released his new album "Cover EP" on Silent Home Records. Songs written by 5 diverse songwriters from across the country covered in Bell's own style. Small string ensembles amended with trumpet, banjo, ukulele and percussion. Christopher has the ability to capture and prologue melodies that slowly get exposed in a very simplistic mellow environment. All My Ghost has to be my favorite one from his album "Cover [...]

I've been listening to this a lot in the last month or so and, honestly, it's fucking gorgeous. There are plenty of strings, accordion and wonderful male/female harmonies which conjure a wistfully old-fashioned air, without being in any obvious way any sort of museum piece. There are slight hints of cabaret, of orchestra and of twee pop, but not all that much of anything. And these may be covers, but none you are likely to recognise, as he has covered songs by his friends, which I like as a concept a great deal. It just sways gently back [...]

Uh yes, it's mailbox cleanup time. And no, I've not been busy looking at porn... well not all the time! and please do continue to bother me! Seriously, don't you hate these posts? I'm so sorry, not the least of all to those lovely musicians! But I've got seriously behind, in a good way, with a lot of reviews and shows to go to and such. So, here's a kind of grab bag of what's been sitting in my inbox for way too long now, deserving some space and not getting any! [...]
