Christopher Paul Stelling doesn't know who Ke$ha is, and he has probably listened to more books on tape than you have. In fact, he's listening to Crime and Punishment, and he asks me what a Ke$ha is. Good for him, right? It takes Christopher Paul Stelling and I a little while to get in touch, between missed phone calls and mixed up time zones, but when we finally do, it's certainly worth it. I catch him while he's at a roadside stop with his lady (as he [...]

After his set at Opening Bell Coffee on March 19th I walked up and introduced myself to Christopher Paul Stelling to be greeted with a big hug and invited to sit with him and bandmate/girlfriend Julia Christgua to watch the next set. Very few people have I met in my life that are quick to be friendly and inviting as Stelling was. After watching the final set he allowed me to tug on his ear and find out what his first SXSW experience was like, how it felt to record above a funeral home and why he used [...]
After sweeping away hearts and minds at SXSW, acoustic singer-songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling sits down PopMatters to discuss how he made slippers from a bolt of leather, why he traded in half of his recording instruments for a single guitar, and how exactly he'd recast Star Wars with characters from The X-Files ... Christopher Paul Stelling knows a few things about atmosphere. A quick listen to his album Songs of Praise & Scorn reveals a songwriter that is raw and honest, absolutely unafraid to address the listener directly, something that's evidenced by his stripped-down, bare-bones [...]

Mention SXSW to the average guy in the street around any part of the UK and you`d be hard pushed to find one in twenty passers-by with any idea of the significance or tradition associated with those four capital letters. It`s hardly surprising really, Austin TX is 4,913 miles away from London, making the cost roughly equivalent to your average European family holiday. As a rule, more out of abstract jealously than journalistic laziness, I tend to tip-toe around that magical week of musical chaos and post a generous handful of mp3`s from featured SXSW artists offered up [...]

Louisville's very own Christopher Paul Stelling has released a collection of originals in the traditional folk style. With Songs of Praise and Scorn, Stelling has made something of a soundtrack for the collected works of William Faulkner. Other than that last bit, it is also pretty good. Read more »

If you like folk and haven't heard CPS yet, you're welcome. I first posted something from this new-age troubadour last year, and I think I've pretty consistently talked him up since then. With good reason, I might add. I'm completely enamored with this brand of soft-spoken, melodic, acoustic folk. For me, he's one of the best musicians around that lives in this musical space. His voice is wonderful. The guitar-work is exquisite. The lyrics are insightful and poetic. There's really no way I could envision improving on what he's already created. "Solar Flares" was released today to promote his debut [...]

First impressions count for a lot with records. How you choose to start an album can influence the listeners' feelings about the rest of its contents. The first few seconds of 'Mourning Train To Memphis', which kicks off Songs Of Praise And Scorn tell us exactly at which end of the singer/songwriter spectrum Christopher Paul Stelling falls. With feverishly plucked strings and a distinct Southern US twang to his voice, Stelling has very firmly nailed his colours to the country mast. Indeed, 'Mourning Train...' gives a very precise introduction to the Stelling sound. Backed by [...]

Christopher Paul Stelling - Songs of Praise & Scorn MMMM In a world of music where production and trends have become increasingly more important than the music itself, it's rewarding to come across musicians who still believe in a "less is more" mentality and recognize that music is not a magnet for attention and popularity but rather one of the most genuine ways of expressing oneself. Christopher Paul Stelling epitomizes this musical sincerity, and his debut album, Songs of Praise & Scorn [...]

Christopher Paul Stelling Exclusive Interview: Christopher Paul Stelling February 18, 2012 by Chuck Norton Before the end of 2011, New York-based singer-songwriter Christopher Paul Stelling and I corresponded for several weeks on number of topics via a few different platforms. We agreed to do an interview via email early in December. As happens with all good intentions, schedule and situations limited our dialog to less that we both intended. We are still attempting to complete the interview, but with the release of [...]
Christopher Paul Stelling's Songs of Praise and Scorn is a gem of guitar-driven folk storytelling with a vinyl up for grabs too!

Neo-folk has always been a bit of a curiosity: contradictory at times and, from a purely objective point of view, you would guess that by now anyone foolish enough to wander back in to that ramshackle boathouse would find that the (combustion engine-fearing) ship had sailed. But, there is evidently a perception of a demographic with an unquenchable thirst for a technophobic troubadour, and here he is. Christopher Paul Stelling , just a man, with a guitar, again... To give 'Songs of Praise and Scorn' its due, it is a definite break from [...]
