Chuck Berry, still rockin' at age 85. Long past the half-century mark, rock and roll is now nearing senior citizen status. Yesterday we marked the 53rd anniversary of the deaths of Buddy Holly, the Big Bopper and Richie Valens, and we've had some tragic losses in the past couple weeks (Etta James, Johnny Otis, etc.). But one of our greatest original rockers is still with us - Chuck Berry, still rockin' (sometimes) at age 85. He has some health issues, but he apparently still performs at the Blueberry Hill restaurant in St. Louis, where [...]

The Kinks: Chapter 1. A Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame band at the beginning of its career.
2011 was a big year in the amazing continuing career of Chuck Berry. After a scary collapse in Chicago, he returned to his monthly post at Blueberry Hill, saw his statue installed in the Loop a... Continue reading "Chuck Berry: There's No One Cooler and Never Will Be" >
There was a lot of good music 50 years ago.
One year ago this week Chuck Berry collapsed on stage in Chicago. It was a call to action for many people who had been slacking on seeing his live show at Blueberry Hill. As residents of this c... Continue reading "Why You Should Go See Chuck Berry As Soon As Humanly Possible" >
Just last week, Esquire published this thorough and fascinating Chuck Berry article. Berry is notoriously wary of the media, so author Luke Dittrich couldn't take a direct route to his subject. ... Happy holidays, dudes and dudettes! Hope you got everything you wished for and downed copious amounts of egg nog. Now, on to more important stuff than family gatherings and gift exchanges....live music! Naturally, there are ton of great shows going on this week in NYC as we lead up to New Year's Eve, including some multi-night holiday runs, some late-night throwdowns, and plenty of NYE parties that don't involve watching a ball drop in 10-degree weather.

Fridays 'round these parts typically see gobs of remixes. Today didn't seem right posting a "Friday Remixes," partly due to the fact that this entire weekend most people will be celebrating Christmas with family, friends and loved ones. I plan on doing the bulk of my shopping today and my procrastinating has taken me as far out as possible. No matter how hard I try to fight it every year, I fall into the same trap. Saturday will be full of football from morning till nighttime. I'm in the championship game of my fantasy league, so I'll be [...]

Gogol Bordello - Dec 2009 ( more by Paul Birman ) Once again, we're approaching the new year, and as always, there are tons of ways to celebrate in NYC with a number of different New Year's Eve shows. Gogol Bordello are returning to NYC to play Terminal 5 on December 30 and 31 . Tickets for both shows are still on sale and we're also giving away a pair. [...]

We at MetalSucks have dealt with the paradoxes involved with conducting a poll to determine great guitar players (read our 25 Best Modern Metal Guitarists poll here)! So we get that in a unweighted vote, the top-ranked axemen may just represent those liked by the largest number of voters; i.e. a dude who we agree is [...]

Everybody knows that Ringo Starr left Rory Storm and The Hurricanes to replace Pete Best in The Beatles. This month, Ringo's replacement in the Hurricanes passed on at the age of 67. As a bandleader, Keef Hartley later played at Woodstock. He died on November 27. It is not very well known that boxing legend Joe Frazier , my favourite fighter of all time, was also a bit of a soul singer. Some of his stuff cashed in on his boxing background; the song featured here is a straight soul number, and it's pretty good. [...]

Tweet " I Found You " from Alabama Shakes is more than just some 602s soul/502s blues throwback, it's more like Ruth Brown meets James Brown with a slight hint of The Starlighters mixed in and there's a difference between the two. It's one thing to be able to throw bands like that in as references, it's another all together that the first time this song came on I was asking myself, "Wasn't this song playing [...]

That's right, guys, Nu Rave Brain Wave is four years old today. To celebrate, I used really poor grammar and absolutely zero effort on a beautiful photograph of me from this year - exactly how I like to be seen, in cashmere and David Yurman about to grab a pug. So thank you all for reading, commenting (if you ever have, and if you haven't a few "fuck yeahs" every now and then isn't so hard, now is it?), tweeting, facebooking or interacting in any way with me, or enjoying anything I've posted. Shout out to all the bands and [...]
