The ever-reliable All Music Guide calls Jim & Jesse "one of the greatest bluegrass bands in history" and the McReynolds brothers enjoyed a remarkably long and successful career from 1947, when they performed daily on a Virginia radio show, until Jim's death in 2002. As well as traditional music the virtuoso pair were never shy of turning their talents to contemporary sounds. One of their finest excursions beyond mountain music was the 1965 album Berry Pickin' in the Country, a cracking collection of Chuck Berry covers. What I love about it [...]
Filed under: The Hit List Sure, most recording artists will tell you they create for the love of music, and a few would even admit that the megabucks and groupie action are also nice. Still, even the [...]

I've been thinking about Memphis all day. In light of MLK Day. In light of the excellent Joe Brouwer poem " Lines in Memphis, Tennessee ." In light of Martin Luther King Jr's assassination on April 4, 1968 in Memphis. In light of his speech the day prior where he gloried in having lived through a previous stabbing and a little girl's letter professing happiness that he didn't sneeze when even a sneeze would have killed him. In light of King's joy at having lived to having seen the sit-ins, the Bill, the marches, the [...]

At a performance at Congress Theatre in Chicago on New Year's Day, influential Rock & Roll legend Chuck Berry collapsed on stage. According to an official statement on Berry's website, the incident was attributed to exhaustion. The 84 year-old guitar player was coming off playing two shows the night before at B.B. King's Blues Club in New York City, and is now back home in St. Louis and resting. We here at HT want to wish Mr. Berry a speedy recovery and quick return back to the stage, which is currently scheduled for January 19 at the [...]

Rock n' Roll legend Chuck Berry collapsed on stage on Saturday while playing a gig in Chicago.
To be honest, I didn't think Chuck Berry was still alive. So on the one hand, yay!, Chuck Berry is still alive. But on the other hand, boo!, the 84-year-old legend collapsed during a Chicago concert and had to be helped off stage. Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Famer Chuck Berry collapsed over his keyboards about an hour into his “Winter Dance” show before a standing-room only crowd Saturday night at the Congress Theater. The 84-year-old Berry’s head lay on a keyboard, and he didn’t move for a [...]

Filed under: News Rock pioneer Chuck Berry startled fans Saturday night (Jan. 1) when he unexpectedly collapsed during his set at the Congress Theater in Chicago. The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer fell head-first into his keyboards about an hour into the event. Berry was motionless for several minutes before three people helped move him off stage shortly before 10:30PM. Fans, reportedly close to 3,700 of them, began to exit the venue, unsure if the entertainer would make [...]

Watch: Conan O’Brien Covers Chuck Berry - “Run, Run, Rudolph” Coco’s Late Night replacement on NBC, Jimmy Fallon, has made an amazing holiday season run — what with last night’s James Earle Jones/Aaron Neville take on “The Night Before Christmas,” The Roots (of course), and “Drunk on Christmas,” to name a few. But, hey, Conan’s got She & Him and now a classic Chuck Berry tune in his court. Soak in O’Brien and the Basic Cable Band’s take on “Run, Run, Rudolph,” complete with [...]

Today, Keith Richards turns sixty-seven in mortal human years. To say he's an "old soul" is an understatement--he's more like an embalmed soul --one who's avoided death more times than the lives of an entire litter of kittens despite topping the notorious NME's Most Likely to Die list for 10 solid years. While those around him perished or wasted away, Keith kept nodding along making some of the greatest (and a few not so great) rock and roll records along the way. You can read all about it in [...]
I know all of my readers know the score: I'm from California (where it was 85 degrees yseterday) but currently in Brighton (where it's balls cold all year long). And it's the holidays, so I'm fleeing this cold arctic winter place for the milder climate, but I thought I'd pay tribute to England via a [...]

Johnny Thunders feeds on lightning " The Heartbreakers blew everyone away, for no more reason than that they were just more experienced -- they had their roots in R&B and rock 'n' roll. They were able to go onstage and draw on all that, whereas these kids ( The Damned , Clash , and Sex Pistols ) couldn't draw on anything yet. Real rock 'n' roll would start to happen and there's no fighting that, no getting around that. No matter how anarchic an audience thinks it is, [...]
