Every edition of Coldcut/Ninja Tune's Solid Steel Radio Show is a treat. Its not always exclusively downtempo music, but they always feature a different selection of downtempo styles. The last show I really enjoyed ( HERE ) focused on downtempo trip hop with some glitch, and this show is completely different but equally entertaining - featuring funk and soul, with a bit of Amon Tobin, trip hop and electronic sounds to finish it off. This show features the "godfather" funk fusion Chuck Brown, along with artists he's influenced, including Nas, Chris Turner, the Beatles, and more.

In the last few days, the music world has lost two innovators, Chuck Brown and Donna Summer , of pneumonia and cancer respectively. Still, each performer continued making music until the day they unfortunately passed. I had the opportunity to speak to a friend of mine, Raymond Rawles, who had seen Chuck Brown perform nearly a thousand times in his life about the loss of the "godfather of go-go" himself. With Chuck Brown passing, what came to mind when you had heard? When I first [...]

This week the music world lost two legendary performers: Donna Summer and Chuck Brown . And given that other greats such as Etta James , Whitney Houston and Adam Yauch of Beastie Boys have already passed away in recent months, we can't help feeling that 2012 will sadly go down as the Year Of Death. See how this, and other events such as [...]
![[Thursday Throwback] Junkyard Band – The Word](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/4272233_lg.jpg)
The Junkyard Band was Def Jam's only go-go signing that I personally know about (there might have been others, but I have too much going on today to properly sit down and research it). The 123 they dropped way back in 1986 of "The Word" b/w "Sardines" is a blisteringly crunchy track you'll hear pop up from time to time in mixtapes, random live DJ sets or that you might just stumble over. It's funky, progressive, and extremely political; this is music that was meant to talk shit about the quality of life poor [...]

This is a tough one… If you aren't from the DMV, or don't know about our culture, it's hard to really explain how much he meant to the city. Chuck was our hometown hero. The man responsible for DC's own sound, Chuck was a real-life legend. From the outpour of celebrity Tweets today, it's easy to see how respected he was within the industry, but at no point was Chuck too big for Chocolate City. From the Lotto jingles, to the sold-out shows, to the Ben's Chili Bowl appearances, Chuck embodied our city to the fullest. [...]

Funk music is ingrained in DC's history. So much so that DC was able to create and cultivate Go-Go music, it's own blend of funk - a genre of music championed by the incomparable Chuck Brown . I'm going to go out on a limb and say that the Godfather would applaud what Big/Bright is trying to do. The band takes elements of traditional funk and combines them with distinctly electro and pop production. The result is a soulful groove that you can't help but dance to. The standout (and one of only a few tracks the [...]

It's remarkable when a band or artist sticks around creating new music for more than 15 years. The hard work involved in doing that under the auspices of mainstream or indie labels is something that should be recognized and applauded. It's all more impressive still when a band or artist's excellence is underrated- or virtually unrecognized by the critical and/or listener mainstream. The most impressive? The band/artist doesn't get frustrated, doesn't complain. It soldiers on, not giving one fuck, just doing its thing, even as the music it influences gets more recognition. This new edition of [...]

TCB – Bait Summer in DC is all about boostin' some good ol' Go-Go from Backyard Band, Big G, Polo, Rare Essence, Northeast Groovers, and of course, the Godfather of Go-Go himself, Chuck Brown. Well Wale has apparently realized that he needs to get back to his DC roots, with the recent release of two tracks that really embody that Chocolate City flavor: LaceFrontin' and Bait. Partnering up with [...]
