The past week has been brutally eclectic, personally. Anything from raging hardcore to soothing electronica to whimsical indie has graced the H-T-A speakers, along with any number of individual tracks further confusing the issue. One constant, however, has been the humble singer-songwriter. An individual who pops up, amidst the chaotic noise, to offer a slow-burning, gentle word, more often than not with only an acoustic guitar and a quality tune in hand and heart. Rather than tackle each individual via an album review or [...]
I'm catching a flight home in a few hours to catch a ultra rare appearance on the other coast by The Parson Red Heads . With Red Cortez, The Henry Clay People, and The Airborne Toxic at Northern Lights in Clifton Park, NY. Short of being at Spaceland in LA a few years ago, I'm pleasantly shocked that I'm getting to see a lineup like that. But I wanted to just drop a note and say...the 500+ photos and review of the Red Cortez, The Henry Clay People, and The Airborne [...]

There's no shortage of aspiring divas these days (judging from the volume of e-mail exhortartions), but singer-songwriter Audra Mae has to rank as one of the most compelling young voices out there. The Oklahoma-reared, Los Angeles-based songstress is an old soul in a young package, with voice that inspires the likes of me to name-check the likes of Patsy Cline, Melissa Etheridge and Dolly Parton and a sound that seems to fit in the First Assembly of the Soulful Twang. She earned some traction when her cover of "Forever Young" was placed in the TV show [...]

Well, here we are on our seventh podcast and I think I've gotten the swing of things. No longer do I feel too silly talking to myself in the middle of the night, and I think I've really figured out how to use Mixcraft . What does that mean for you? It means that the actual creation of them will be much easier, so a greater amount of attention can be paid to the overall mixing/leveling/mastering of them. All of this will be good. Now, let's get on with the show. This month's got a good [...]

Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars As the frontman of Hot Water Music , you expect Chuck Ragan to be an angst-ridden misanthrope, but you'll find a different man writing the tunes on his second solo album, Gold Country . Chuck has called this work some of the most mature music he has created to date, and such a statement is quite visible upon repeated listens. As you begin listening to this album, you get the feeling [...]

August started and ended well for me but there was this whole section in the middle, somewhere after Kevin Devine's acoustic set in Dekalb and Roman Candle's amazing show at Schuba's on the 30th, where everything got stressful and muddled and resulted in my current status of taking a short "mental health vacation". It's no surprise I was pleased to see August end because, well, if I could sum up the month in one song lyric, I'd plagiarize the Hold Steady and say that killer parties almost killed me but the best part of the start of September [...]

Here we are. Another month, another podcast. Can you believe it's been 6 months? Traffic on these is improving a little and that's raised my spirits about doing them...I know I'm supposed to be all about doing them regardless of the amount of people who listen....and I will be, just as soon as the podcast's monthly traffic gets in the same neighborhood as ninebullets.net's daily traffic. That said, let's talk about this month's podcast. The moment I sat down and started mapping out what songs I wanted to play this month I started getting excited. It quickly became [...]

This isn't your usual Daytrotter post! I swear! So not only was Chuck Ragan on Daytrotter yesterday but he also played several new songs from his upcoming solo LP. This track, "Cut Em Down" is one of the highlights and will appear on Gold Country which is due out September 1st on Side One Dummy Records . Check 'em all out now and let us know what you think of the new material. Download: Chuck Ragan - Cut Em Down (live) [MP3]
Hot Water Music were one of the worlds most underrated bands in my eyes. Despite holding legendary status within the punk community and earning constant kudos from the rock press they, perhaps by choice, remained underground heroes. After a series of accomplished releases the band went on hiatus in 2006 with members Jason Black, George Rebelo [...]

Seeing as the Hallmark Holiday is hours away, I thought I would browse through my collection and throw out my Top 5 Favorite Songs with the word "valentine" in the title. Sure, one would think that songwriters have better things to do than sing about a nonsensical holiday with little or no meaning, but then again, they are just love songs in the end, aren't they? Some of these bands have made appearances on our lists before, and some you might not be aware of, until now that is. So here is to you and yours on this [...]
afternoon... we've, or at least i've, heard this all before. apparently scott "spiral stairs" kannberg is sick of sitting around the house and mentioned in a recent interview in loud and quiet that this summer maybe a grand time for the gents of pavement to reunite - seeing as it is their 20th anniversary and all. as i stated previously, this isnt the first time, and probably not the last, that rumours of pavement reunion have left us all a wee bit blue balled. here is a lovely jesse malin, who in my opinion is one [...]

Lucero lead singer Ben Nichols was kind enough to give me some of his limited pre-show time at the Black Cat recently when he came through DC with Chuck Ragan , Tim Barry , and special guest Frank Turner on the Revival Tour . The show was a true hootenanny that included individual and collective sets by Nichols, Ragan, Barry, and a rotating special guest (in DC, it was Frank Turner). (Ben Nichols) [...]
Since 2005's Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line was released, followed by last year's parody, Walk Hard , the Johnny Cash homage overload has pretty much died down. However, praise of the late legend will resume with the Anchorless Records release of All Aboard: A Tribute To Johnny Cash on October 21st. Taglined by the label as "Punk/Indie Greats Honor The Man In Black," the album will offer renditions from the likes of The Bouncing Souls, The Dresden Dolls (Feat. Franz Nicolay Of The Hold Steady), The Gaslight Anthem, The Sainte [...]
Chuck Ragan cover The Loved Ones Hot Water Music man Chuck Ragan has posted his version of The Loved Ones ' " Pretty Good Year " on myspace . The track is taken from his forthcoming " Give And Take " 7" split with The Loved Ones .

Tim Barry ( Avail ), Chuck Ragan ( Hot Water Music ), Ben Nichols ( Lucero ) & guests Bob and Austin Lucas are coming to Louisville's Skull Alley on Oct. 4 for " The Revival Tour ." While the show will feature individual sets from each artist, in the old tradition of true folk music, the performance will largely feature artist collaborations, as each performer will have guests coming on and off stage, including the other solo [...]
