What? How did this happen all of a sudden? Sort of rellavation that two very different musical trail blazers turned 50 this year along with many other singing alternative icons. Daniel Johnston's Birthday was in January and Henry Rollins's was 02.13.61 to be exact. I know this because it says it on the spine of the Black Flag tour diary he wrote called Get In The Van |||| . Fast forward and the Rollins Band is playing a show at The Fastlane II in Asbury Park and he mentions he [...]

Download Hum + Haw [...]

I've done a Valentine's Day post every year here at the BWF, and seriously considered taking this one off. Partially, because I'm not thrilled by this particular holiday, and also I've found writing to be increasingly difficult as of late - hence the relative silence here. Writer's block, I guess, which is funny because I'm not even a writer, I'm a photographer. So, happy Valentines Day to all of you who are lucky enough to be attached and happy about celebrating it. Personally, as time goes on I find this day to be a bit of a [...]

In the eighteenth century it was often convenient to regard man as a clockwork automaton. In the nineteenth century, with Newtonian physics pretty well assimilated and a lot of work in thermodynamics going on, man was looked on more as a heat-engine, about 40 per cent efficient. Now in the twentieth century, with nuclear and subatomic particles a going thing, man had become something which absorbs X-rays, gamma rays and neutrons. It may be that the civil servants of the future will not be accredited unless they first receive a degree in brain surgery. - [...]

No doubt that regular readers are familiar with the satirical Billy Corgan Twitter gimmick . It's really taken off in a ways that I could not have foreseen, and I have to assume that you all might be interested in an update. First, Corgan himself has acknowledged its existence. Official statement from the King Pumpkin, found in paragraph six of his mission statement thesis : I do plan on doing other things coming up though. I have notions to start 2 other bands and also release some more solo work. I would [...]

Now, I´m no Sonic Youth fan, but any band that makes punk flavored covers of Madonna songs are all right with me. Ciccone Youth was a Sonic Youth side project in the late 80´s that spawned two albums, the first was all Madonna covers, and the second, The Whitey Album was covers of other 80´s hits like "Addicted to Love" (Robert Palmer). The best song however was this one: MP3 Ciccone Youth - Get Into The Groove(y) ( Alt. Link )

Well here comes another Song Of The Week post. Not much that interesting has really been grabbing me recently. I am excited however about one of my favorite bands ( Black Moth Super Rainbow ) releasing a new album in the next few months, called 'Eating Us' (out on Graveface Records). If you don't know of/haven't listened to these guys, just search for their tracks on waves. Warms, fuzzy, mellotron laden, psychedelic, mmmmmm. This track is actually off their new 'Don't You Want To Be In A Cult?' 73. MP3: Black Moth Super [...]
A selection that'll work for all involved in the Valentine's fest today, the lovers and the brokenhearted, the lustful and the addicted. Enjoy. João Donato - Ê Menina (Hey Girl) Ciccone Youth - Addicted to Love Alton Ellis & Phyllis Dillon - Why did you leave me to cry Buzzcocks - Love Battery

"And this I believe: that the free, exploring mind of the individual human is the most valuable thing in the world. And this I would fight for: the freedom of the mind to take any direction it wishes, undirected. And this I must fight against: any idea, religion, or government which limits or destroys the individual." As Princess Nomad has been urgently requesting to be able to sign up for Facebook , we have belatedly acquiesced to her pleas. Negotiations revolved around us having her password, as well as yours truly joining, the better to keep tabs. Apparently, we were the last two people in the Western world to become members, as everyone and their Uncle Bob is on as well. After a couple of weeks of tinkering, I have already become somewhat bored of yet another timesuck . However, the lure of pissing away hours on the [...]
Madonna - "Burnin' Up" "Unlike the others I'd do anything, I'm not the same, I have no shame" The pop music of the moment when I became aware of pop music, as an active, shaping, cultural force, was all loud guitars and jaded deadpan. I like that still, as it was the crucible in which my sensibility was forged. As a result, my younger years were spent in denial of Madonna, as the insincere predecessor to my beloved sarcastic truth and light. But now, with the [...]

Happy Birthday Madonna! When I'm 50 may I look half as good as you do (except how you've been looking the past few weeks...not so good)! There is nothing I could possibly say about Madonna that hasn't already been said, enjoy the covers, I have a ton, so maybe we will see a part II some day. If I had money I'd see her on her upcoming tour, it looks like she'll be pulling out an awful lot of the classics, I hope her foot heals quick for all of you that do have tickets! Tracks in chronological order, or [...]
Moon Martin - Bad Case of Loving You (Doctor, Doctor) Here's another I just found out about recently. Famously covered by Robert Palmer, the original was written and performed by Moon Martin from his 1978 album Shots From a Cold Nightmare . Ciccone Youth - Addicted to Love [originally by Robert Palmer] A side project of Sonic Youth, Ciccone Youth released The Whitey Album in 1988 with this Robert Palmer cover, which was sung by Kim Gordon and recorded at a karaoke booth in a mall.

Quirk. It's an abnormality, a kink, an eccentricity. It's something that can completely turn someone off to a song, or it can make the song unique and therefore endearing. Being quirky is a risk, but when done right, it's something I cherish. I can't stand people without humor and the same goes for bands, so here are a few songs that I feel exemplify the quirk aesthetic. We'll begin with the King Of Quirk, Mr. Weird Al Yankovic himself. Classically trained on the accordion as a child and master of parody, Weird Al is a Grammy Award winner [...]
Though Cut Copy's debut Bright Like Neon Love is made up of earnestly gorgeous electro-pop, the Melbourne trio's Fabriclive DJ session is just ridiculously fun — plus, it's stocked with a sweet medicine cabinet in the form of Tiga's disco-crazy remix of Soulwax's "E Talking" and Riot in Belgium's robo-glam "The Acid Never Lies." The band's triumphant compilation flows remarkably well, with the exception of MSTRKRFT'S lifeless "Work on You," which leads listeners to work it right off the dance floor. All is forgiven once standouts from the always-solid Gomma Records creep into the mix (Munk's "Disco Clown," [...]
