Hidden Shoal Recordings is excited to announce the release of new single 'Manatoc Enters The City / The Long Fall' by musical experimentalist and long-time Robert Pollard collaborator Todd Tobias , taken from his forthcoming debut solo album Medicine Show . 'Manatoc Enters The City / The Long Fall' is a multi-part mini-epic that offers a tantalising taste of Medicine Show 's shadowy steampunk dystopia. The track kicks in like a panic attack, a dizzying flurry of organ and toms alternating with lurching guitar. The chaos soon calms, but builds in intensity again as a [...]
Nine albums in, Robert Pollard's Circus Devils have produced Capsized! , an album no less strange than its predecessors, yet far more successful than any of them. It was not quite six years that Guided By Voices was away when a strange thing happened to Robert Pollard's myriad projects in the absence of his "main" band. While he continued to release solo records, seemingly as his central focus, they never quite asserted themselves as the center of the Pollard circle. They were (often) great, but instead of rising above his side projects, they came off as one more [...]
Hidden Shoal Recordings is proud to announce the signing of musical experimentalist Todd Tobias to its roster of artists. After years of producing Guided By Voices and playing in Circus Devils with Robert Pollard, Todd Tobias is striking out on his own with his debut solo album, Medicine Show, a multi-faceted instrumental opus, evoking a shadowy steampunk dystopia. Todd Tobias and older brother Tim Tobias grew up in Northeast Ohio, USA, where the two played together in a string of bands, culminating in Clouds Forming Crowns and Circus Devils (the latter with Robert Pollard). [...]

Here are my obtuse meanderings vis-a-vis the best records of the year. Please forgive my inanity. 11. Let's Wrestle – Nursing Home Nouveau '90s rock was to 2011 what dance punk revivalism was to 2001. And of all the bands channeling classic slackercore this year, Let's Wrestle did it the best. 10. Russian Circles – Empros I'll be honest, I'm not a huge fan of instrumental rock — particularly metal. After all, it usually involves more noodling than a Pauls [...]

Hidden Shoal is excited to announce the official release of The European, the new EP by Colorado based Dutch-American atmos-pop artist Kramies . Produced by Todd Tobias ( Guided By Voices , Robert Pollard , Circus Devils ), The European sets Kramies' gorgeous voice and acoustic guitar within a glowing tableau, epic in scope yet delicate in detail. The EP fades into view with 'Intro', a simple cyclical pattern of guitar, piano and vocals gradually subsumed by drones and distortion. This leads into the majestic, [...]

Circus Devils – Capsized! Download "Cyclopean Runways" (mp3). Of Robert Pollard's numerous projects, the Circus Devils albums are consistently epic and narrative. Pollard again provides lyrics and vocals to music created by Tim and Todd Tobias on the band's ninth album. This is a diverse set that mixes catchy rock and unusual transitory tracks. Most of the lyrics are related to underwater adventures. Somehow the variant sounds create a cohesive album and one of the prolific Pollard's better releases.

Circus Devils CAPSIZED! Happy Jack Rock Records [2011] Fire Note Says: Circus Devils once again will surprise you around every corner on their cohesive 9th record CAPSIZED! Album Review: I bet that even the most die hard Robert Pollard fan will be surprised that CAPSIZED! represents the 9th album from his long standing band, Circus Devils, with the talented Tobias brothers, Todd [...]
Don Thrasher: With the working relationships you've established with Todd Tobias on the solo stuff and Circus Devils, Chris and John on Boston Spaceships and Doug on Lifeguards you seem to have found a method that allows your output to keep up with your songwriting. Robert Pollard: I'm not much of a studio rat. I don't [...]

It is nice to see the elderly keeping themselves busy. With Robert Pollard's failure to release an album since last July, I was beginning to worry that the old man was finally slowing. Instead, it looks like that time was simply spent with a little band you might remember: Guided By Voices. To prove that he hasn't lost a step, though, Pollard will be releasing two albums in the first two months of 2011. The first, a solo effort entitled "Space City Kicks," hit shelves on January 18th, whereas his collaboration with former GBV member Doug Gillard, "Waving At The [...]

Mother Skinny shows just enough focus to make it seem possible that Pollard could make a consistent album based on a wholly inconsistent sound. Of all Robert Pollard's musical incarnations, Circus Devils have long been the most difficult one to hang with. The Devils choke out awkward chunks of prog rock, charming in their goofiness at times, but often with too much surface abrasion and not much under that. They may be fun experiments at times, but mostly they come off as filler in between other Pollard releases. As if there was time for that. And up until [...]
Robert Pollard returns tomorrow with his third release in less than a month—following the solo We All Got Out Of The Army and Boston Spaceships' Camera Found The Ray Gun EP—with Circus Devils' Mother Skinny (Happy Jack). The 20-track LP features Pollard singing atop experimentally inclined music created by brothers Todd and Tim Tobias, and the [...]
