Another interesting article from good ol' High Country News , this time about Richard West Sellars, a former NPS employee whose 1997 book, Preserving Nature in the Natural Parks , showed the "gaps" in the National Park Service belief that it was a preservation agency. The book is widely credited for inspiring the Natural Resource Challenge , a 1999 initiative that made resource management and preservation the agency's top priority. Read the article in full here . On the night of September 14, the First Unitarian Church experienced a rush of Portland sound as Fruit Bats took the stage after their two opening acts, Vetiver and local Philly band Citay. Fruit Bats played their upbeat folk pop to a group of eclectic listeners ranging from avid fans to old hippie dancers. Citay was an amalgamation of people and sounds. With the lead vocalist playing an acoustic guitar like Dave Matthews [...]
![YOUTH LAGOON, PETER BJORN AND JOHN, THE DODOS [SUGGESTED NYC CONCERTS]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/3714994_lg.jpg)
I know I say this every week, but seriously everyone, this might be one of the best weeks of live music here in NYC in recent history. We have The Dodos , Cut Copy , Young Man , and Youth Lagoon in town plus multiple shows from Peter Bjorn and John . Enjoy the warm weather early in the week and then Fall-like conditions towards the weekend, and, of course, enjoy yourself some great live music! The Dodos , The Luyas @ Music Hall of [...]

This episode is sponsored by BottleRockIt . Mixtape: The Ones That Got Away (Podcast #255) Our recent Regional Bias fundraiser concert featured the final local performance by Royal Baths before the band relocates to the East Coast, a fact that got us thinking about the many active artists who have left the Bay Area for other pastures in recent years. As an organization founded to champion local music, we focus on bands while they live here, but there's always a lingering feeling that great bands that [...]
For the past 13 years, the Truck Festival has been the UK's low-key alternative to conglomerates like Glastonbury, and with the United State's own festival scene close to reaching over saturation , the American version of Truck seeks to do the same. The second installment of Truck America is being held from September 9-11 at the Big Indian campground just two-and-half-hours north of New York City, and the lineup for this year's shindig looks quite different from most other major U.S. fests. Headlining the festivities are The [...]

It's ten years since Michael Azerrad first published his defining DIY '80s scene portrait Our Band Could Be Your Life , which covered an independent music culture that changed irrevocably a decade before that with the release of Nevermind . Round anniversaries make apt opportunities for retrospectives, and in the case of Our Band , this year has been a sort of meta-reflection: between a panel at SXSW, and last night's show at Bowery Ballroom, 2011 has seen a few organized moments of the present "indie" culture celebrating and reflecting on how the blueprint Michael [...]

List by Brendan Sullivan I looked back over my Google calendar and my blog and this website and discovered that I have been (at least, if I'm missing some...) 53 concerts / live shows thus far this year. That's more than one per week! So instead of contributing a list of favorite bands or songs or albums, I thought I'd share with you some of the best live shows that I saw this year. They weren't necessarily chosen because the headlining band is one of my favorites or even necessarily that the music [...]
and they're bringing Wolf People in tow. It's at the Windmill, soon. A very cheap ticket , especially if you consider the guitar porn levels of technical ability the headliners bring with them. Wow, this post was just so link heavy. It's like being in 1998 again. Hypertextlicious!

Modernin folk- ja americana-musiikin huippunimiin lukeutuva Citay saapuu syyskuun lopulla Suomeen. Ensimmäistä kertaa maassamme nähtävä amerikkalaisyhtye esiintyy syyskuun 27. päivä Helsingin Kuudennella Linjalla ja seuraavana iltana Tampereen Telakalla. Aikaisemmin Piano Magic -yhtyeessä vaikuttanut kitaristi/vokalisti Ezra Feinberg ja The Fucking Champs -kokoonpanosta tuttu kitaristi/tuottaja Tim Green perustivat Citayn kotikaupungissaan San Franciscossa vuonna 2004. Vuonna 2006 julkaistulla nimettömällä debyyttialbumilla Citayn sointi oli lähempänä Black Sabbathin ja Led Zeppelin kaltaista riffirockia kuin nykyistä americana-vaikutteista psykedeliarockia. Tämän vuoden tammikuussa Citay julkaisi Dead Oceans -levymerkin (mm. Dirty Projectors, The Tallest Man On Earth, [...]

![Citay: Dream Get Together [Album Review]](http://cdn.elbo.ws/posts/2562458_lg.jpg)
Citay 's new LP, Dream Get Together , just found its way into my inbox. There are several descriptors you could apply to the album, from Cosmic to Anthemic . But when it really comes down to it, Dream Get Together finds a unique place in music simply due to its wide breadth of influences - so wide that the music they create has become unlike any of the bands whose influence they draw. This is apparent from the get-go with "Careful With That Hat", a [...]
After releasing a solo album and announcing a tour in March, WHY? drummer Josiah Wolf will play some of that solo stuff opening for some new WHY? tour dates. They've both extended their separate tours, which crisscross throughout the West Coast, as well. Wolf will open for his band on May 27th in Vancouver and the 28th in Portland, before joining the indie hip-hop group at Sasquatch . He will continue to open for the band on its three dates in California before going solo for a while. After crossing the [...]
