Chicago's fiction writer and playwright Joe Meno will be reading excerpts from his newest novel, The Great Perhaps , at the City Lights Bookstore this coming Tuesday (7pm, free). Meno's collection of works include The Boy Detective Fails (Akashic 2006), Hairstyles of the Damned (Akashic 2004), Tender as Hellfire (St. Martin's 1999), and How the Hula Girl Sings (Harper Collins 2001). Over the years, Meno has found a peculiar writing style embedded in his developed works, catching the eye of literary critics across the board. [...]

San Mateo's Her Space Holiday are heading out soon on their first national tour in four years, beginning with a kickoff show at Bottom of the Hill on May 6th. They'll be joined at the show and on tour by City Light , a multi-city project teaming Seattle singer-songwriter Matt Shaw and long time friend and Bay Area producer Nick Andre with Denver Dalley (Desaparecidos, Statistics, and Intramural) and Andy Fitts (Airport Cathedral, Aqueduct). In addition to the tour, HSH and City Light have [...]

This week marks the release of the Her Space Holiday/City Light split single on Banter Records . Her Space Holiday ( Mush Records ) teamed up with their friends City Light for this split single which finds the two bands covering each other. City Light, whose debut full length will be released later this year via Banter Records cover 'New Kid Revival' while Her Space Holiday cover 'All You Demons' (a track close to the Devil's heart!) Go Try [...]

So this isn't"Phresh out the Inbox" so much as it's phresh off my friend's facebook wall. My friend blasted Red Man & Method Man's new track "City Lights" feat UGK over the weekend giving his friends J and Nasty Kutt a shout out for producing the beats on this. After listening, I'm excited to hear what else Red Man and Method Man have in store for us next. Their highly anticipated album "Blackout 2" is scheduled to drop on April 28th and shortly after, they have plans to start filming "How High Part 2". [...]

This is a collaboration that I never saw coming. I'm assuming "City Lights" is off Meth and Red's Blackout 2 , which is supposedly scheduled to be released later on this year. I still regret not buying one of those "Blackout 23 shirts at Rock The Bells in Chicago last year, but luckily I got to see them tear it up live and it was one definitely one of the best and most energetic hip-hop performances I've ever seen. However, "City Lights" definitely doesn't sound like anything on the first Blackout, with Redman even rapping with auto tune on [...]

method-man-redman-ft-ugk-city- lights Method Man and Redman drop a new joint on us that is rumored to be from Blackout 2 dropping April 28th. They get a sampled Pimp C chorus and Bun spits a new verse for the track in case you were wondering like I was if they got a posthumous verse from Pimp for the song. The few tracks I have heard from Meth and Red have me thinking that this will be part of the humongous Wu Tang resurgence that I'm expecting in '09. I always like the tracks where established artists [...]
As with most Noise Pop shows, there was a whole lot of music at the Independent last Saturday. Indie heavy weight AC Newman was joined by recent indie darling Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele and up-and-comers Devon Williams and City Light for four hours of excellent indie music. AC Newman [...]

Tomorrow is the last full day of Noise Pop, and it's a duesy. But before you start your night of shows, head over to the Pop N' Shop at The Verdi Club . This awesome independent design fair has become one or Noise Pop's coveted non-music events, and includes designers and artists selling clothing, jewelry, posters and more. It takes place from 12pm-4pm and is free! Saturday will also feature a couple of matinee shows, one of which is at Bottom of the Hill with The Matches , [...]
Myspace // "Mashed on Fashion" [Audio] We last wrote about this promising three piece from Nottingham in September and since then, they've produced a video for "Mashed in Fashion." While it may be a low budget affair, it still is quite appealing.

Along with my set at the Ghetto Pass EP launch party below on Friday I'll also be dropping in to play at Bar Rumba for the launch of City Lights. Here's a little intro for you: "Following the untimely demise of The End and stalwart West End nights like NagNagNag there is a gaping party- sized hole in the West End these days, and given the illustrious history of this 'hood', the boys behind it's newest Friday night disco CITY LIGHTS are ready to set the record straight once again. Formed from spliter groups of West London's infamous [...]

Myspace // "Mashed on Fashion" [mp3] // BBC Nottingham [Interview] Although the sound of Young England may be splintering off in many different directions, there are still plenty of great bands out there that aren't just making noise for the sake of making noise. Just because you're pushing the envelope doesn't mean you're worth listening to. CityLights hail from Warrington/Nottingham and are friends with Exitfare [...]
Skinny Boy – Amy Milan For those who don't know, Amy Milan is the girl from Canadian band, Stars. While there are of course similarities, her solo album is actually quite different from the band's sound. It has an overarching country element to it, though I seemed to have picked the least country, and most stars-like song of the lot. Typical. It's a great album nonetheless. You Sound Like Louis Burdett – The Whitlams I recently saw The [...]

A fair amount of turnover this week near the bottom, along with bands that I recently saw, or aspired to see. Here are some of those new (and old) discoveries, enjoy. I've realized that I really, really like Bowery Electric . Their last album, Lushlife , blends some of my favorite elements of trip-hop, singer-songwriting, and downtempo, making it a nocturnal work on par with, in my humble opinion, Endtroducing . Their past work, while very well done, relegates singer [...]
