Chicago musicians Bob Nanna and Lauren LoPiccolo have united to create simple, but dreamy, acoustic pop ditties under the moniker Jack and Ace . "I'm Sorry That You are the Black Death" pairs delicately plucked guitar melodies with earnest lyrics about, what else, love. Jack and Ace prove that melancholy doesn't need to be so complicated to be effective. Nanna is better known for his work with influential post-hardcore (or emo, if you like) outfit Braid and Hey Mercedes. LoPiccolo previously teamed up with Nanna in the City on Film. [...]
There's snow on the ground, a chill in the air, a tree in my living room, and good tidings all around. What better than some for more Christmas songs for your listening pleasure? Well, how about all the other Christmas songs I've posted over the last few weeks? Here are the links to Day 1 , Day 2 , Day 3 , Day 4 , Day 5 , Day 6 , and Day 7 of this series. MP3: Brand New - O Holy [...]
:: Isis will be going out with a bang. The band is doing a 12-inch split with Melvins . So you know that will be insane. :: Who knew? If it wasn't for Teenage Politics , we would never have had The Jonas Brothers . Damn you, MxPx ! :: Speaking of bro bands whose last record was not that great, Kings of Leon drummer Nathan Followill said their next album will be more of a return to Youth & [...]

My internet shat itself yesterday, and didn't come back up until this afternoon - here's what should've appeared yesterday... What better way to kick off your Friday than with a selection of the best tracks from the It All Started archives? If I'm honest though, this is really just an excuse for me to repost all those tracks that I love and that you may have missed the first time round. Today's edition is all about the coverage... enjoy! Always On My Mind (Willie Nelson Cover) - Iron & Wine with Calexico [...]
On the fifth day of Christmas my true love gave to me, five golden rings... and a whole bunch of Christmas MP3's. Are you overwhelmed yet? I sure am. I love love love The Firebird Band's "Gift" and even though it really isn't a Christmas song (i.e. not on a Christmas specific album) I've still included it here. It's my comp3ilation so I can do what I want, including making up words that combine letters and numbers. Bah humbug! MP3: Brand New - O Holy Night [...]

This week's episode of the Contrast Podcast asks us to talk about our favourite live versions . I had a few that I thought about contributing, but in the end I went for the divine cover of 'Always On My Mind' by Iron & Wine and Calexico. I have posted this before, and I'm not going to say anything about it that I haven't already said. It's gorgeous and that yearning pedal steel and that twang gets me every time . Always On My Mind (Live Cover) - Iron & Wine with Calexico [...]

SIDE A 1. Neko Case - Buckets Of Rain (Bob Dylan Cover) 2. Hezekiah Jones - I Am A Cinematographer (Palace Brothers Cover) 3. Great Lake Swimmers - Song Sung Blue (Neil Diamond Cover) 4. In between posting holiday songs I thought it might be a great idea to post some more holiday songs. I swear I'll get my top 50 of 2008 up sometime this week or next, but until then just drown yourself in Christmas cookies, candy canes, mistletoe, snowflakes, pine trees, and whatever else it is that gets you through this time of year. MP3 | Chris Garneau - It's Almost Christmas MP3 | Cap n' Jazz - [...]

I could have easily posted a Sufjan Stevens holiday tune or Rilo Kiley belting out Xmas Cake , but I opted to dig within by X-mas music library (that fact that I have a X-mas music library scares me too) and found a few you people might find heartwarming...or at least tolerable. The City on Film - O Holy Blanket Thunderbirds are Now! - Christmas in Hollis [...]

I have a sort of weird GMM for you all this week, so embrace it as you wish. I've never heard the full version of this song, but from what I've heard it features everything that qualifies as guilty. Estelle- American Boy (Feat. Kanye West) I'm shocked that this song hasn't been on GMM before, so in honor of my terrible mistake I'm posting the original plus two bomb covers. Dexy's Midnight Runners- Come On Eileen I love how they use the horns as the string [...]

Grrrr, my internet's been cutting in/out all day... and the only cure is a monster batch of even more 80s covers! Here are some that didn't make the first cut , mostly because they don't carry the same personal resonance as some of those earlier picks. Some I just plain forgot to include and the 80s police got mad at me. The Pigeon Detectives - The Power of Love [originally by Huey Lewis & The News] Tropical Jazz Big Band XI - [...]

This is going to strike a chord of concern for my mental well-being with a lot of you, but i really love rain and inclimate weather. Sure, sunny and seventy-five is great and I love it as much as the next guy, but it gets boring, hot, and terribly unexciting. For this reason, I love storms, which is why I was overjoyed to see that every single day in the 10 day forecast for here in Nashville includes rain and thunderstorms! And so that, along with the very mixtape mood I've been in this week, leads us here, [...]
T here is nothing like a hot cup of coffee and a smooth little playlist in the morning. If you take care of the coffee, I'll handle the music. MP3 | The Belles - Idle Acres MP3 | Rocky Votolato - Suicide Medicine MP3 | Mike Felumlee - Something Better MP3 [...]
