Almost two years ago exactly, I was introduced to City Rain through DJ B-Rob. "I'm Gone" was a completely unique approach to synth pop/rock, and from the first listen it was obvious that it had a slew of promising traits. A lot has happened for the band since then. For ... Read More

With their new single "The Optimist" due out for download later this month, Philly electro-pop project City Rain premiered the song today on the blog Sunset in the Rearview , where not only was the new music showcased, but the background behind the song is shared. From the blog: “The Optimist” tells the classic tale of personal tragedy leading to spiritual triumph. After losing the love of his life, losing two of his close friends, and struggling with unemployment in an unforgiving recession, Runyan met Scott Cumpstone, a fellow Temple University graduate and [...]
City Rain is comprised of Ben Runyan and Scott Cumpstone, and the concept of their newest song, which we are ecstatic to be premiering, is one for the ages. "The Optimist" tells the classic tale of personal tragedy leading to a spiritual triumph. After losing the love of his life, losing two of his close friends, and struggling with unemployment in an unforgiving recession, Runyan met Cumpstone, a fellow Temple University graduate and working musician. The two formed City Rain and with it came this idea. In the band's own words, "While every man has the capability [...]
City Rain is a duo from Philly, and well, they decided to remix their own track. The resulting song is far and away better than the original, featuring vocals reminiscent of Alex Clare and an unrelenting, grimy electronic backdrop. [via The Chuckness ] - Follow @THEArjunGrover
First of all, I don't really understand the logistics of remixing your own song. Remixes are done when an artist who had nothing to do with the original version adds their own interpretation to a song, which fundamentally changes the whole essence of the production. Thing here is, City Rain ... Read More
Philly electronic pop project City Rain continues to evolve. After several months of alternating betweem solo performances by DJ and singer Ben Runyan with duo shows featuring old guitarist Jarrett Zeerer, the band today confirmed the split of the founding duo and introduced new guitarist Scott Cumpstone. "Scott has been helping me write the [forthcoming] ... Continue reading
New York experimental rock band Psychic Ills headline Johnny Brenda's tonight. The psychedelic-infused outfit recalls the distorted and distressed, laidback sound of early Kurt Vile with lo-fi vocals and hypnotic arrangements that seem on the verge of exploding. Psychic Ills will be releasing One Track Mind on February 19th via Sacred Bones Records, following up ... Continue reading

Great video from Philadelphia duo City Rain . Their Montage EP came out August 28th. I expect good things from these guys in the future.
We love to see a musical pairing that's working this well. Electro-pop outfit City Rain and swaggery rockers Cold Fronts first shared the stage at PhilaMOCA in August. Since then, they've opened the Work Drugs Endless Summer Kickoff at Johnny Brenda's last weekend, and now they've both been added as openers on the September 28 ... Continue reading

City Rain - Montage Ben Runyan and Jarrett Zerrer aka City Rain , released their anticipated Montage EP last week. This is an exciting EP for me to share with you guys.. I’ve been listening to it for the last month, so its been tough holding it back from the masses. In that time I’ve gotten to know it quite well and though its a bit raw in some places (as would be expected with an experimental pair)… Its emotionally charged and chalk full of diverse electro beats and instrumental elements.. all resulting in a versatile, [...]
During their set at Johnny Brenda's on Friday, City Rain dropped an unexpected and enjoyable big-beat cover of Rick Springfield's 80s pop classic "Jesse's Girl" woven into their own song "Big Boys Do Cry" - a number from their new Montage EP. Turns out this wasn't a complete act of spontaneity, but instead a recreation ... Continue reading

Imagine the ocean. In and out with great purpose, waves crash against the shore. The ebb and flow of the ocean changes in strength with the tides, growing large when the time is right, but easing back into its smaller yet confident motions in other moments. Farther out, the sun shines brightly overhead, reflecting against the waters with great sparkle and awe. The growth in City Rain’ s latest EP Montage resembles the progression of ocean tides in its musicality. Ben Runyan’s experimentation with synthesizers is ambitious, but the payoff is large. Montage ’s [...]

Philadelphia electro-pop outfit, City Rain , released their Montage EP via Bandcamp yesterday. Ben Runyan and Jarrett Zerrer create groove-heavy, experimental pop marked by vocal effects, synthesizers, and syncopated guitar rhythms. They cite La Roux, Above & Beyond, Nitrous Oxide, and Depeche Mode as influences. In the past, we featured the track, "I'm Gone" from the 2011 EP of the same name. Montage continues an evolution in experimental synth pop. From the excellent instrumental grooves of "Fleeting Smile" to "Hearts on Fire" terrored torch song to [...]
